For the least unusual starting point, use a supported Ubuntu LTS release with OBS Studio. OBS documents an Ubuntu installation route, but there is no official comparison establishing Ubuntu—or any other Linux distribution—as the most reliable or fastest choice for a 24/7 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream. Your GPU encoder, drivers, sustained upload speed, OBS setup and recovery plan matter more than the distro name.
Which Linux distribution should you choose?
Ubuntu LTS is a practical default, not a proven winner
Ubuntu LTS is a reasonable place to start if you want a familiar package and driver path. OBS provides an Ubuntu installation route in its Linux installation guidance. That guidance is dated August 2021, so check the current instructions and supported Ubuntu release before installing.

This is an operational recommendation, not a performance ranking. The available official guidance does not establish that Ubuntu outperforms Fedora, Debian or another distribution for continuous streaming, nor does it provide a 24/7 distro-uptime comparison.

OBS recommends installing through Flathub on non-Ubuntu distributions. Whichever distro you choose, confirm that its current graphics driver and OBS build expose the encoder you plan to use. OBS packaging and driver support can vary by release, so test on the actual machine rather than assuming that a distro label guarantees compatibility. See the OBS Linux installation page.

What matters more than the distro
OBS compatibility is only a starting floor
OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System (X11) or Wayland as basic Linux/Unix requirements. It explicitly warns that meeting the requirements does not guarantee the computer can stream or record. They are not a 4K60 performance specification: CPU and GPU load depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS System Requirements (dated August 25, 2021).
Check the encoder on the exact hardware
OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync Video as hardware-encoding paths. A supported hardware encoder can shift encoding work off the CPU, but actual results depend on the GPU or integrated graphics generation, driver support, bitrate and scene. OBS’s hardware-encoding page also notes that earlier encoder generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software x264 using its default veryfast preset. That OBS article gives historical compatibility guidance: NVENC support beginning with GeForce 750 Ti or 900-series (Maxwell) cards, and its best-results recommendation of 6th-generation NVENC (Turing), including GTX 1650 revision 2 and later; it lists Intel Quick Sync support beginning with Core i 2xxx and recommends Haswell/Core i 4xxx or newer due to quality concerns with early generations. These are not current buying recommendations. Before relying on any encoder, check the specific GPU, current Linux driver and OBS build on the machine you intend to run.

Plan for unattended operation
A 24/7 stream needs more than a working launch. Decide how you will detect a stopped stream, recover the machine after a reboot, and apply operating-system or driver updates without disrupting a live broadcast. Use a maintenance window, keep a known-good boot or recovery path, and test updates before applying them to the streaming system. These are practical operating precautions, not guarantees of uptime from any distribution.

Set up and test the 4K60 YouTube stream
1. Install OBS and verify the encoder
- Install a supported Ubuntu LTS release or your chosen distribution, then follow the relevant current instructions from the OBS Linux installation page.
- In OBS, check the available output encoders and select the hardware encoder only if it is present and works with the installed driver. If it is missing or unstable, resolve the driver and package compatibility issue before committing to continuous operation.
- Build the actual scene you intend to run. A static playlist, a camera scene and a high-motion game capture place different demands on the encoder. Test representative movement and audio, not just a still preview.
2. Match output settings to YouTube’s recommendations
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following incoming video bitrates. These are recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection or encoder will sustain them. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
| Output target | Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4K / 2160p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p at 60 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | Not stated in YouTube’s cited recommendation | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | H.264 | Not stated in YouTube’s cited recommendation | 34 Mbps |
Use constant bitrate (CBR), set a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS; supported video codecs listed in its guidance are H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, at up to 60 fps. Check that the selected codec is actually available in your OBS encoder path; the distro alone does not ensure it is.

3. Check the upload path and stream health before relying on it
- Measure sustained upload speed from the streaming location. YouTube Help recommends a speed test and says to test before starting the live stream. Leave headroom above the chosen video bitrate for audio and fluctuations; a speed-test peak is not proof of stable continuous capacity.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Use RTMPS where available.
- Start a private or unlisted test with the intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, audio and representative motion. Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS for dropped frames or encoding overload. Test changes before switching to the public continuous stream.
- If 4K60 will not stay stable, test a lower resolution or frame rate—1440p60 is one possible step down—and validate that setting against the upload and encoder again. Changing distributions will not fix a bandwidth, driver or encoding bottleneck.
Account for YouTube’s viewer-side behavior
The bitrate you set is the incoming feed to YouTube, not necessarily the bitrate each viewer receives. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers. Its guidance says 4K streams do not offer the low-latency option and are set to normal latency. Viewers may therefore see a delay, and their playback quality can differ from your incoming 4K60 signal. YouTube Help.

Keep the content and channel eligible
Linux, OBS and a stable encoder do not grant rights to the material being broadcast or settle whether a channel qualifies for a particular YouTube feature. For a continuous music, ambience, worship or other prerecorded stream, use video and audio you own or have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current policies for live streaming and monetization before going live. A stream that runs technically without interruption can still face a copyright claim or other policy action.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The intended hardware encoder is missing in OBS | GPU generation, Linux driver, OBS package or encoder support | Confirm the exact GPU and current driver support; check the OBS build and distribution installation route. Do not infer support from the distro name. |
| OBS reports encoding overload or the picture stutters | Encoder load, scene complexity, resolution or frame rate | Test the real scene and encoder; simplify the scene or reduce resolution/frame rate, then test again. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops frames | Unstable upload or bitrate too close to available capacity | Repeat an upload test from the streaming location, reduce the bitrate or output target, and test a sustained broadcast. |
| The stream looks different for viewers than in the OBS preview | YouTube transcoding and viewer playback conditions | Allow for YouTube’s live transcoding and check playback on a separate viewer device and connection. |
| The broadcast stops after a system update or reboot | Update timing, startup/recovery setup or changed drivers | Use a maintenance window, test updates before the next broadcast, and verify the known-good boot and OBS recovery procedure. |
