Best Lightweight WebDAV Clients for Windows: RaiDrive, Cyberduck, and WinSCP

For Windows WebDAV, choose RaiDrive to mount a share as a drive, Cyberduck for a dedicated connection browser, or WinSCP for free transfers, portable use, and scripting. No documented benchmark establishes a universal lightweight winner.

There is no documented universal winner for “lightweight” WebDAV use on Windows: the available vendor documentation does not compare memory use, CPU use, transfer speed, or reliability. Choose by workflow instead: RaiDrive for a WebDAV share mounted as a drive in File Explorer, Cyberduck for a dedicated connection browser and transfer window, or WinSCP for free, open-source transfers with portable use and scripting.

How to choose a Windows WebDAV client

First decide how you want to work with the remote files. A mounted drive behaves more like a drive in Windows; a dedicated client gives you a connection window for browsing and transfers. Then check whether the client supports your server’s authentication policy and whether its Windows requirements fit your system.

  • Mounted drive: Choose RaiDrive if you want the WebDAV share to appear in File Explorer.
  • Dedicated transfer window: Choose Cyberduck for a WebDAV connection browser or WinSCP for conventional transfers.
  • Portable use or scripting: WinSCP documents both.
  • Authentication: Match the client’s supported methods to the server, and use HTTPS where appropriate.

These are workflow distinctions, not performance rankings. No controlled comparison establishes which client uses the least RAM or CPU or transfers files fastest.

RaiDrive: best when you want WebDAV as a Windows drive

RaiDrive’s WebDAV documentation describes mounting a WebDAV server as a Windows drive, including NAS and Nextcloud examples. That makes it the closest fit if your main goal is to access remote files through File Explorer rather than manage transfers in a separate browser. Its setup guide recommends HTTPS. #1 Best Overall

RaiDrive’s pricing page lists writable WebDAV in its free Standard plan, which allows up to eight drives. The page also notes restrictions and advertisements; paid plans add functions, and the displayed monthly price is based on a three-year commitment. Check the current pricing and plan terms before choosing, since plan details may change.

Cyberduck: best for browsing and transferring over WebDAV

Cyberduck is a dedicated connection browser and transfer client rather than a drive-mounting choice. Its documentation lists WebDAV over HTTP and HTTPS and supports Basic, Digest, NTLM, and Integrated Windows Authentication. Cyberduck’s WebDAV documentation.

Authentication support does not make every method equally safe: Cyberduck says Basic Authentication should only be used over TLS. If your server or organization requires a particular authentication method, confirm that the account policy and server implementation work with the client before relying on it.

WinSCP: best for free transfers, portable use, and scripting

WinSCP supports WebDAV and WebDAVS and is described by its project as free and open source. Its documentation also covers portable operation and scripting, useful if you do not want a mounted drive or need to automate file transfers. See the supported protocols and portable use documentation.

WinSCP’s technical requirements page specifies 40–100 MB of free disk space. That figure is an installation/storage requirement; it does not measure memory use, CPU use, transfer speed, or how “lightweight” it feels in operation. WinSCP technical requirements.

WinSCP’s download page currently identifies version 6.5.7 and notes compatibility work for a newer OneDrive WebDAV interface. Version details change, so check the current download page before installing.

Cyberduck Browsing connections and transferring files in a dedicated client WebDAV over HTTP and HTTPS; Basic, Digest, NTLM, and Integrated Windows Authentication Installation disk-space figure: not stated in the cited WebDAV documentation
WinSCP Free/open-source transfers, portable use, or scripting WebDAV and WebDAVS 40–100 MB free disk space required, according to WinSCP; this is not a RAM or speed measurement

What “lightweight” means here—and what is not established

For this choice, “lightweight” is best treated as a practical description of fit and installation footprint, not a measured performance claim. The cited vendor pages do not provide comparable RAM or CPU measurements, transfer benchmarks, or reliability tests. WinSCP’s disk-space range is the only concrete footprint figure in the reviewed documentation, and it cannot be used to infer how much memory the program uses.

Compatibility also depends on the WebDAV server and its authentication rules. Protocol support in a client is not a guarantee that every server, account policy, or server-specific implementation will work identically. Test the intended client against the exact server and account before depending on it for routine work.
