For a graphical setup, start with OBS Studio’s Media Source and enable Loop; for a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source with Loop Playlist. For a headless machine, mpv can loop playback, but it does not by itself send video to YouTube Live: you still need a configured streaming/encoding pipeline, commonly built with FFmpeg. There is no established universal “lightest” winner or comparative 24/7 endurance result, so choose by workflow and verify the complete stream on your own hardware.
Which Linux option fits your stream?
| Option | Best fit | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio Media Source | One local video, with a GUI | OBS supports Linux and its Media Source has a Loop setting for a local file. OBS Media Sources | The documented loop feature does not establish that OBS is the lightest choice or guarantee 24/7 uptime. |
| OBS Studio VLC Video source | A playlist of local videos | Provides a Loop Playlist option when VLC is installed. OBS Media Sources | Adds a VLC dependency. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| mpv | Command-line playback on a headless Linux machine | The command-line media player supports infinite looping; its project documents hardware decoding as an option if CPU decoding is too slow, and says it must be enabled explicitly. mpv manual · mpv project | It handles playback, not the complete YouTube Live connection. No comparative CPU or RAM figure establishes it as the lightest for every machine. |
| VLC | General media playback, or as an OBS playlist dependency | VLC is a cross-platform media player and framework; OBS can use its video source when installed. VideoLAN VLC · OBS Media Sources | The cited features do not establish VLC as a uniquely lightweight 24/7 encoder. |
| FFmpeg | Headless streaming and encoding pipeline | It is the relevant class of tool for constructing a command-line stream output path. | It is not a media player. A working command depends on the source and output settings; unattended restart and monitoring require additional operational planning. |
Choose by workflow
- For one file and visible controls, use OBS Media Source and enable Loop.
- For a collection, use OBS’s VLC Video source and Loop Playlist, and install a VLC build matching OBS’s architecture.
- For a headless server, treat looping and streaming as separate jobs: mpv can repeat playback, while a streaming/encoding tool such as FFmpeg handles the YouTube output path. Validate the actual pipeline rather than assuming a player alone is a live-stream solution.
- If you only need local playback, VLC or mpv may be sufficient. For a YouTube broadcast, the encoder connection and sustained upload are also essential.
How to set up a looping YouTube stream on Linux
GUI route: OBS Studio
- Install OBS Studio for Linux and open it. Create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source. Choose the local video file and enable Loop. Check that the preview shows the intended picture and that audio plays.
- For multiple files, add VLC Video Source instead. Build the playlist and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, configure a stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it.
- Set the output to a codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate supported by your encoder and upload connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS. The current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, up to 60 fps; it recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Verify YouTube’s current settings for your selected combination.
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then go public when picture, audio and connection are correct. Keep monitoring during operation.
Headless route: playback plus streaming
mpv’s manual documents infinite looping. That makes it a playback candidate, not a one-command replacement for OBS or a complete YouTube encoder setup. A headless workflow also needs a stream/encoding process, commonly FFmpeg, configured for the actual input file, codec, frame rate, bitrate, keyframes and YouTube endpoint. The available evidence does not establish a tested FFmpeg command for every source, so do not copy a generic command without checking its options against your media and YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

Before leaving a headless process unattended, arrange process supervision, restart behavior and monitoring separately; a process that remains running is not proof that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio. Test the full path and confirm the public stream is healthy.

| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These figures are specific to the listed resolution, frame rate and codec; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for other combinations. Leave upload headroom rather than setting the stream at the full measured capacity of a connection, and test at the time and location you expect to broadcast. YouTube says it recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.
Meet YouTube’s live-stream and archive constraints
- Channel eligibility: YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says a channel must be verified and must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s eligibility before building the Linux workflow. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Copyright and rights: Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. A loop does not make copyrighted material permissible, and YouTube’s live-stream checks can detect restricted content. Review the platform’s live streaming tips and rights requirements before broadcasting.
- Long broadcasts: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If retaining a complete recording matters, record locally and plan for shorter sessions; a local file is a backup, not a guarantee of YouTube archiving. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
- Originality and monetization: Permission to stream material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Repeating prerecorded material does not itself establish compliance with YouTube monetization rules; check the current YouTube channel monetization policies for reused-content requirements.
Test and monitor before relying on 24/7 playback
- Test the exact video or playlist you intend to use, including its audio, transitions and loop point.
- Run the complete encoder-to-YouTube path and confirm the preview in Live Control Room before going public.
- Check stream health and review any platform warnings; YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming that a running encoder means a healthy broadcast. See encoder settings and live streaming tips.
- If keeping an archive matters, verify that local recording is being written and growing. Do not rely on a broadcast longer than 12 hours to yield a complete YouTube archive.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The video stops instead of repeating: In OBS, open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. For an OBS VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist.
- The OBS VLC source is unavailable or fails to load: Install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS; a 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the channel is eligible, the stream URL and key are correct, and the key has not been exposed or replaced. Recheck the encoder’s connection settings in Live Control Room.
- Stream health is poor or the broadcast drops: Compare the configured bitrate to the actual sustained upload capacity, reduce output demands if necessary, use the correct codec settings and test again. Monitor YouTube’s health messages rather than relying on local playback alone.
- CPU decoding cannot keep up: mpv’s project documents hardware decoding as an option that must be explicitly enabled. Confirm hardware and driver support for your Linux setup before relying on it; there is no universal setting established here.
- The archive is missing or rewind is limited: Check stream duration. YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be archived and may have restricted DVR rewind; use local recording if retention is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream without keeping a Linux PC on, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded file at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat per-slot price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts.
