How to choose a lightweight laptop
Low weight is useful only if the laptop still suits the work you need it to do. Before choosing, check the exact configuration’s weight, screen size, operating system and software compatibility, ports, memory and storage, and price in your market. Dell’s buying guide also identifies weight, screen size, processor, battery life, and budget as comparison filters.

- Operating system: Confirm that your essential apps, work tools, and peripherals support macOS or Windows as needed.
- Weight and screen: Compare the configured laptop’s actual weight with the display size you prefer; a smaller screen is not automatically the best fit.
- Battery evidence: Keep manufacturer estimates separate from reviewer test results. Test methods and settings differ, so the numbers are not directly interchangeable.
- Ports: Count the connections your devices require. A laptop with only USB-C ports may mean carrying an adapter or hub for some peripherals.
- Memory, storage, and local price: Verify the exact configuration rather than assuming every listing has the same capacity or cost.
Dell’s Laptop Buying Guide 2026 outlines comparison criteria. Availability, configurations, and pricing can vary by country and seller.

MacBook Air 13-inch with M5: the macOS option
Apple announced M5 MacBook Air models with 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch displays. Its 2026 announcement lists support for 1 billion colours, 500 nits of brightness, 512GB of standard storage, configurations up to 4TB, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. Apple says battery life is up to 18 hours; that is a manufacturer estimate, not the same measure as a reviewer’s test.

ASUS describes the Zenbook A14 as under 1 kg and claims more than 32 hours of battery life. The cited sources do not include an independent battery test for this model, so treat the figures as manufacturer claims rather than evidence that it outlasts the other candidates. Before buying, confirm the exact model sold in your region and look for testing of that configuration if battery life is central to your choice.
ASUS lists the model in its Thin and Light laptop lineup.
Make the final choice
- Set your software requirement. Choose macOS or Windows based on the apps and workflow you actually depend on.
- Choose a screen size. Decide whether a 13-inch class laptop suits your daily work or whether you prefer a larger display; Apple’s M5 Air announcement includes both 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch models.
- Check the exact configuration. Confirm weight, memory, storage, and regional model details on the specific listing, not just the product family page.
- Audit your ports. Compare the laptop’s connections with your headphones, displays, storage, and other peripherals. Decide whether carrying an adapter is acceptable.
- Compare battery claims carefully. Note whether a figure is a manufacturer estimate or reviewer result, and whether it refers to streaming, web browsing, or another method.
- Check the current local price. Compare like-for-like configurations from sellers in your market; prices and availability are not established by the specifications above.
For a broad portable macOS choice, investigate the 13-inch MacBook Air M5; for Windows, investigate the XPS 13; if the smallest claimed weight matters most, investigate the Zenbook A14 but seek configuration-specific independent testing. The right pick depends on fit and evidence, not one battery number.
