The best marine aquarium light depends first on what lives in the tank. A fish-only display needs appealing, even illumination; a coral reef also needs intensity and coverage suited to its livestock. Choose by tank footprint and depth, coral goals, spectrum and viewing preference, and useful controls—not by wattage or brand name alone.
Start with the aquarium’s livestock
Fish-only displays
For a fish-only tank, Bulk Reef Supply says there is no minimum output requirement for coral growth. Choose a full-spectrum fixture that illuminates the aquarium from end to end, then prioritize the appearance you want and a setup that fits the tank. This is retailer guidance, not a universal lighting standard. Bulk Reef Supply’s aquarium LED lighting guide provides the underlying advice.
Coral systems
Corals make output and distribution more consequential. Bulk Reef Supply’s general guidance distinguishes lower lighting needs for soft corals, moderate needs for large-polyp stony (LPS) corals, and stronger, broader, more consistent light for small-polyp stony (SPS) corals. These categories are starting points; they are not species-specific prescriptions.
| System or coral group | Indicative PAR range | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Soft corals and LPS | 50–150 PAR | Bulk Reef Supply retailer guidance; actual intensity depends on placement and fixture geometry. |
| Mixed reef | 150–250 PAR | Bulk Reef Supply retailer guidance; different corals in one tank may need different placement. |
| SPS | 250–350 PAR | Bulk Reef Supply retailer guidance; aim for appropriate spread and consistency, not just a high reading in one spot. |
PAR means photosynthetically active radiation: a measure of light in the 400–700 nm range. It is useful when comparing intensity, but it does not describe the fixture’s spectral composition or how the tank will look. Red Sea’s explanation of PAR and its discussion of PUR (380–480 nm) are the manufacturer’s framing; it says PUR must be calculated from spectral analysis rather than measured directly. Treat PUR claims and percentages as source-specific, not as a universal standard. Red Sea’s ReefLED G2 page explains its approach.

Match coverage to tank dimensions
Measure the aquarium’s length, width and water depth, then compare them with a fixture’s coverage information at the intended mounting height. One bright area does not guarantee even light across the full footprint: fixture count, position and mounting height affect distribution and shadows.
Red Sea publishes PAR maps for ReefLED G2 60, 115 and 170 fixtures over 20-, 24- and 32-inch cube examples, with mounting heights stated for the measurement setups. Those maps are useful for understanding what was measured, but they are manufacturer measurements—not a guarantee for a differently shaped, deeper or differently arranged aquarium.

For a complex aquascape or an SPS-heavy tank, a single fixture may leave shadowed areas. Bulk Reef Supply describes multi-fixture, LED/T5 hybrid and supplemental LED-bar arrangements as ways to improve coverage in some setups. They are conditional options, not default upgrades. A PAR meter can help map an installed system; check that the meter is suitable for underwater use. Confirm that any mounting arm, hanging kit or light bar is compatible with the exact fixture.
Choose spectrum and appearance together
Light must support the intended coral system while producing a view you enjoy. Blue-heavy output can make coral fluorescence stand out; a more balanced or whiter presentation may look more natural to some viewers. Channel controls can help tune the display, but a pleasing color setting alone does not establish that intensity and coverage suit the corals.

Philips describes CoralCare Gen2 as having 68 LEDs across six wavelengths, with blue emitters spanning 415–490 nm, and discusses balancing coral growth with appearance through two user-controlled channels. These are Philips product details and claims, not a universal prescription for coral lighting. Its guidance aptly says, “Proper lighting is one of the key aspects when maintaining a marine aquarium with corals and reef fish.” Philips CoralCare product information describes the fixture.
Compare fixture types and examples on their merits
Bulk Reef Supply’s 2026 buyer guidance describes LED as a common choice for new tanks, T5 as a more diffused alternative, and LED/T5 hybrid arrangements as a possible coverage option. That is the retailer’s assessment; hobbyists may prefer different output and operating characteristics. The examples below illustrate different ways to evaluate a product, not a tested ranking or universal winner.

| Red Sea ReefLED G2 | Manufacturer PAR distribution examples for 60, 115 and 170 fixtures, with tank dimensions and mounting heights. | Whether the measured footprint and height match your aquarium; the maps are not independent comparative tests. |
| Ferplast AQ-LUX REEF | Official listing gives 24 W/50 cm, 36 W/72 cm, 42 W/90 cm and 55 W/110 cm variants, timer choices of 6, 9 or 12 hours, and 30-minute sunrise and sunset simulation. Power supply is listed as not included and available separately. | Current regional variant, tank compatibility and included accessories before ordering. Ferplast’s product listing has the details. |
| AquaIllumination Hydra and EcoTech Marine Radion | Bulk Reef Supply names these as popular choices and places Hydra and Radion examples in higher-control and top-tier groupings. | Specific model, coverage, controls and fit; these are retailer classifications, not independent product tests. |
Bulk Reef Supply sums up its selection criteria this way: “The best LED lighting for a reef tank is the one that gives you the right mix of coverage, coral-friendly PAR, appealing coloration, and controls that are easy to live with long term.” The useful point is that a brand label cannot substitute for matching a fixture to the aquarium.

Once a coral system has a balanced spectrum and intensity, Bulk Reef Supply advises keeping intensity and photoperiod stable. Avoid making large changes simply to chase a different visual effect; use the livestock and the distribution of light in the tank to guide adjustments.
Quick Recap
A practical selection sequence
- Classify the tank: fish-only, soft-coral/LPS, mixed reef or SPS-heavy.
- Record dimensions and mounting constraints: note the footprint, depth, available mounting height and aquascape features that may create shadows.
- Compare coverage evidence: use maps or specifications only when their tank dimensions and measurement height are relevant to your setup.
- Assess intensity and spectrum separately: use PAR as an intensity input, then consider channel adjustment and the viewing appearance you prefer.
- Check installation and controls: confirm scheduling, dimming, mounting, included power supply and accessory compatibility in the current listing.
- Plan for measured adjustments: if needed, map light with an underwater-suitable PAR meter and make changes conservatively, then keep the established schedule consistent.
