The best LEGO Technic supercar for an adult builder depends on which real car you want, which mechanical functions matter to you, and whether you need a set that is currently obtainable from LEGO. On the specifications available from LEGO, the McLaren P1 (42172) is the stronger current choice for a road-car build with a seven-speed gearbox, V8 engine and adjustable rear wing. The Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 (42115) is the better fit if its V12, eight-speed sequential transmission and scissor doors are the reason you are building. It is an older 2020 set, and LEGO’s US product page showed it sold out when checked.
Neither set can be declared universally “best.” LEGO’s official material establishes specifications, age ratings, prices shown at particular times and listing status, but it does not provide an independently measured difficulty ranking, build-time test, resale analysis or hands-on comparison. Use the guide below to match the model to your priorities rather than assuming that more pieces automatically means a harder or better build.

Quick verdict
- Choose the McLaren P1 (42172) if you want the newer, currently listed road-going supercar with 3,893 pieces, a seven-speed gearbox with a shifter drum, a V8 piston engine, opening doors and an adjustable rear wing. LEGO’s current US Technic catalog snapshot displayed $449.99 and an add-to-bag option; the Fall 2024 US retail catalog also listed the set at $449.99.
- Choose the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 (42115) if the Lamborghini design, V12 engine, eight-speed sequential transmission and scissor doors matter more than current availability. It has 3,696 pieces and an 18+ rating. LEGO’s US page displayed $449.99 but marked it sold out in the accessed snapshot; LEGO’s instruction index identifies it as a 2020 release.
- Look at the McLaren Formula 1 Race Car (42141) only if you specifically want an F1 car. It is a separate race-car category, not a road-going supercar, and LEGO marks the 1,434-piece, 18+ set retired.

McLaren P1: a current road-car centerpiece
The P1 is the most straightforward recommendation when your priority is a current LEGO Technic supercar rather than a hard-to-find older release. Its 3,893 pieces make it the larger of the two road-car sets in this comparison, and LEGO rates it 18+. The official feature list centers on a seven-speed gearbox operated through a shifter drum, a V8 piston engine, opening doors and an adjustable rear wing. Those functions give the finished model several visible talking points: you can demonstrate the transmission, show the pistons moving, open the doors for display and change the rear-aerodynamic position.

The P1’s catalog price evidence needs a date attached. LEGO’s current US Technic catalog snapshot displayed $449.99 with an add-to-bag option, while LEGO’s Fall 2024 US retail catalog described the same $449.99 US price. A catalog or storefront display is not a guarantee that the price, stock or regional availability will remain unchanged.
Lamborghini Sián: choose the Lamborghini-specific mechanisms
The Sián is the choice for builders who want Lamborghini styling and a different mechanical emphasis. LEGO lists 3,696 pieces and an 18+ rating. Its official description includes an eight-speed sequential transmission, a V12 engine with moving pistons, steering, front and rear suspension and scissor doors. The scissor-door mechanism is a distinctive display feature, while the suspension and steering give the model more moving systems to demonstrate when it is on a table or shelf.
Availability is the practical complication. The LEGO US product page snapshot used for this comparison showed a $449.99 price and a sold-out status. LEGO’s official instruction index identifies 42115 as a 2020 release, which helps explain why it may be a legacy or secondary-market purchase rather than a directly available current set. A sold-out LEGO page does not establish an aftermarket value, and a reseller’s price should not be treated as an official LEGO price.
Mechanical functions: seven speeds versus eight
Transmission design
The P1 uses a seven-speed gearbox with a shifter drum. The Sián uses an eight-speed sequential transmission. The number of gears is a specification, not a measurement of which mechanism is more reliable, realistic or difficult to assemble. LEGO does not publish an independent comparison of the two gearboxes, so select based on the car and the kind of function you want to operate.

For a builder who enjoys explaining how a selector changes gear positions, the P1’s explicit shifter-drum feature is central to the model’s appeal. For someone who wants the higher stated gear count and a Lamborghini-branded sequential setup, the Sián supplies that specification. In both cases, gear alignment during construction matters: follow the official instructions, keep axles fully seated and test each selector position before closing inaccessible sections.
Engine layouts
The P1 includes a V8 piston engine; the Sián includes a V12 engine with moving pistons. Both are display-friendly functions because turning the drivetrain can make the pistons move. The official descriptions do not provide piston dimensions, engine displacement modeling details or a laboratory assessment of smoothness, so those qualities should not be inferred from the cylinder count alone.
Steering, suspension and bodywork
What LEGO explicitly lists
The Sián’s official feature list explicitly names steering plus front and rear suspension, in addition to its scissor doors. That combination favors builders who want to articulate the chassis and demonstrate several forms of movement after the body panels are complete.
The P1 feature descriptions supplied here explicitly name opening doors and an adjustable rear wing. They do not state dimensions for the finished model in the cited material, and they do not establish a comparative suspension specification. Do not assume that an unlisted feature is present or absent; use the current instruction set and product page if a particular chassis function is decisive for your purchase.

Display interaction
Opening doors and a movable wing make the P1 easy to pose in more than one display state. The Sián’s scissor doors, steering and suspension invite a similarly interactive display, with the added visual identity of Lamborghini’s door design. Decide whether you prefer a clean closed-car silhouette, an open-door presentation or a model that visitors can safely manipulate. Moving features are most enjoyable when the finished model has enough clear space around it to operate them without knocking adjacent objects.
How much shelf space does the Sián need?
LEGO gives the Lamborghini Sián finished dimensions of over 5 inches (13 cm) high, 23 inches (60 cm) long and 9 inches (25 cm) wide. Plan for more than the stated footprint if you want to open the scissor doors, turn the wheels or reach the transmission controls. A shelf at least the model’s full length and width is a minimum planning figure; a little clearance at the front, rear and sides makes handling safer.
No finished dimensions for the McLaren P1 are stated in the cited LEGO catalog and product material used here. Measure the completed model from the official instructions or the current product listing before ordering a display case. Do not substitute the Sián’s dimensions for the P1 or assume the two cars occupy identical space simply because their prices and age ratings are similar.

Finding a Sián when LEGO shows sold out
The Sián page’s sold-out label means only that LEGO’s US listing was unavailable at the time it was accessed. It does not prove that every retailer is out of stock, nor does it establish what a used or sealed copy is worth. If you shop outside LEGO, verify that the listing is specifically set 42115, check whether the box is sealed or opened, confirm that all numbered bags and instruction materials are included, and compare the seller’s regional currency and shipping cost. Ask for clear photographs of the box seals and major parts when the condition is important.
Do not confuse list price with total project cost
The cited prices are US figures shown by LEGO at particular times. They do not include possible taxes, shipping, display furniture, lighting or a replacement-parts budget. A secondary-market Sián can cost more or less than its former LEGO price, but no market-wide pricing or resale statistic is established here. Set a maximum delivered price before searching so scarcity does not turn an otherwise suitable build into an impulsive purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Adult-building experience: what the evidence can and cannot tell you
Both road-car sets carry LEGO’s 18+ designation. That identifies the intended adult audience, but it is not an independently measured difficulty score. The larger P1 piece count does not prove it takes longer or is harder than the Sián, and the Sián’s eight-speed transmission does not prove the opposite. LEGO’s supplied pages describe functions and specifications, not controlled build-time trials, error rates or comparative comfort for different skill levels.
Plan the workspace before opening bags
- Reserve a flat surface longer and wider than the finished car, with room for loose subassemblies and instruction pages.
- Use small trays or labeled containers for axles, gears, pins and connectors. Keeping similar parts separated reduces the chance of installing a visually similar piece in the drivetrain.
- Keep the official instructions nearby and photograph complex mechanisms before you close a section if you expect to troubleshoot later.
- Test each gearbox position, steering input and moving engine section whenever the instructions make that mechanism accessible. A small correction is easier before bodywork covers it.
- When a panel or door binds, stop and inspect axle alignment, pin seating and clearances rather than forcing the part.
What to test before final display
- Rotate the drivetrain gently and confirm that the engine pistons move without scraping.
- Cycle every stated transmission position; if a selector skips, reopen the most recent accessible section and check gear orientation.
- Turn the steering from lock to lock and make sure the wheels do not catch the bodywork.
- Open and close the P1 doors or Sián scissor doors slowly. Resistance usually indicates misalignment, not a feature that should be forced.
- On the P1, move the rear wing through its adjustment range. On the Sián, compress the front and rear suspension lightly and evenly.
These are practical handling checks, not claims that one set is objectively easier or more durable. They simply help you catch assembly errors while the relevant mechanisms are still accessible.

When an F1 model is the better adjacent choice
Some builders searching for a “Technic supercar” actually want a modern race car. Keep that category separate. The McLaren Formula 1 Race Car (42141) is an 18+ model with 1,434 pieces and LEGO lists a V6 piston engine, steering, suspension and a differential. LEGO’s official page marks it retired. It is therefore a relevant option for an F1 fan who values race-car proportions and suspension mechanics, but it is not a road-going supercar substitute for the P1 or Sián.
A decision framework for choosing one set
- Start with the badge. Pick McLaren if the P1 is the car you want to own in model form; pick Lamborghini if the Sián’s identity and scissor doors are the attraction.
- Choose your headline mechanism. Select the P1 for its seven-speed shifter-drum gearbox, V8, opening doors and adjustable wing; select the Sián for its eight-speed sequential transmission, V12, steering, suspension and scissor doors.
- Check access before comparing prices. The P1 had an add-to-bag signal in the cited LEGO US snapshot. The Sián was sold out in that snapshot and dates to 2020, so your purchase route may differ.
- Measure the display location. The Sián requires over 23 by 9 inches (60 by 25 cm) of stated length and width, plus operating clearance. Obtain the P1’s current official dimensions before ordering a case.
- Set a delivered-price ceiling. Use LEGO’s displayed US price only as a dated reference, and account for tax, shipping and any secondary-market premium.
- Buy the model you will finish and display. A feature list cannot replace personal enthusiasm for the car. The best set is the one whose design and mechanisms justify the time and shelf space for you.
Care and long-term display
Technic supercars combine exposed mechanical elements with large body panels, so dust can accumulate in gear areas and around suspension arms. Use a soft brush or gentle air to clean rather than applying force to the drivetrain. Support the model from underneath when moving it, especially with doors or wings open. Keep direct sunlight and high heat away from the display area to reduce long-term discoloration and stress on flexible elements.
If a mechanism becomes stiff after storage, rotate it slowly by hand and inspect for dust or a displaced panel. Do not add household oil: it can attract dust and affect LEGO elements. For a missing or damaged part, identify the element through the official instructions and use LEGO’s parts-support process for your region; keep the set number, 42172 or 42115, available when requesting help.

Bottom line: match the mechanism and access to your priorities
The McLaren P1 (42172) is the most practical recommendation for an adult builder who wants a currently listed LEGO Technic road supercar, a larger 3,893-piece build and a seven-speed gearbox, V8 engine, opening doors and adjustable wing. The Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 (42115) is the more compelling choice when Lamborghini styling, a V12, an eight-speed sequential transmission, steering, suspension and scissor doors outweigh the inconvenience of a 2020 release and the sold-out LEGO US snapshot. Treat the McLaren Formula 1 Race Car (42141) as a separate retired F1 option, not as a third road-supercar winner.
