Best Large-Screen Laptops Under $500: What to Buy and Check

The 16-inch HP OmniBook 3 is the strongest reported fit under $500, but its October 2026 price may have changed. Here’s what to verify before buying.

If you want a laptop with a screen of at least 16 inches for less than $500, the strongest reported match is the 16-inch HP OmniBook 3. HP’s offer was reported at $449.99 on October 1, 2026, for a configuration with an Intel Core 5 315, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. That is a dated price, not a live-price guarantee, so confirm the exact configuration and checkout total before buying.

Best strict-under-$500 option: HP OmniBook 3 16-inch

The reported HP configuration meets both parts of the brief: a screen of at least 16 inches and a reported price below $500. The October 1, 2026 report described a direct-from-HP offer of $449.99 for a 16-inch IPS display described as 2K, an Intel Core 5 315 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and Windows 11 Home. Check the reported HP offer, then confirm the current price and SKU directly with the seller.

Those specifications describe one reported configuration, not every OmniBook 3 bearing the same family name. Before checkout, make sure the listing matches the screen size, display resolution, memory, storage, processor, and operating system you expect. The 8GB memory and 256GB storage are the reported configuration; decide whether they suit your everyday apps and file needs rather than assuming another version has the same components.

A 16GB alternative sits at the budget boundary

Dell 16 was reported at exactly $500 in June 2026 with an AMD Ryzen 7 250, integrated Radeon graphics, 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and a 16-inch Full HD IPS display. At that reported price it does not meet a strict “under $500” limit. It becomes relevant only if the current price drops below your ceiling or you are willing to spend exactly $500. Check the reported Dell configuration and verify the price and SKU before deciding.

The Dell’s reported 16GB of memory and the HP’s 8GB are useful specification differences, but the cited reports do not provide a controlled performance comparison. They are not enough to conclude that one laptop is faster or better for a particular workload.

What counts as a large screen—and what you give up

This guide treats 16 inches or larger as a large-screen laptop. A 15.6-inch model is a near-match, not a strict fit; consider one only if you are comfortable with a slightly smaller display and it offers a better overall fit for your needs.

A larger screen gives you more viewing area and can allow a more comfortable keyboard layout, but the trade-off is portability. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide says, “A 14- to 16-inch screen provides a larger area to view photos or videos and a more comfortable keyboard fit.” It contrasts those sizes with 10- to 13-inch laptops for people who carry a computer frequently. That is general guidance, not a rule for every shopper. Read the Consumer Reports screen-size guidance.

Check the exact laptop before you pay

  1. Confirm the current total. The HP’s $449.99 figure was reported on October 1, 2026, and the Dell’s $500 figure was reported in June 2026. Neither is a guaranteed current checkout price. Check the seller’s live listing and make sure the total stays within your budget.
  2. Match the configuration, not just the model name. Verify that the exact SKU has a 16-inch-or-larger screen and the stated resolution, RAM, storage, processor, and operating system. One model family can include different configurations; RTINGS likewise advises readers to check the full review for variants because its budget table reflects the model it tested. See RTINGS’ guidance on configuration variants.
  3. Check the seller and stock. The reported HP offer was described as sold directly by HP. The cited reports do not establish current stock or checkout prices, nor do they identify an exact Amazon listing for either configuration. Confirm who is selling the laptop and what is included before ordering.
  4. Match the specifications to your use. Consider whether the reported memory and storage are sufficient for your apps and files. The available reports do not establish comparative gaming, creative-work, or long-term performance, and they do not provide a battery-life comparison; don’t treat the listed specifications as proof of those outcomes.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
