Windows 11’s minimum requirements are only an operating-system compatibility floor—not a useful target for most development workloads. If you use Visual Studio, Microsoft’s 2026 guidance recommends 16 GB of RAM for typical professional solutions and says the IDE works best with 64 GB and a CPU with 16 or more cores.
Start with workload, not Windows 11 minimums
Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements include a compatible 64-bit processor with at least two cores, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI and Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a display larger than 9 inches with at least 720p resolution. These establish whether a PC meets the OS requirements; they do not describe a comfortable developer laptop.

Instead, list the editor or IDE, languages, emulators, virtual machines, containers, and other tools you expect to run at the same time. Their demands differ. Microsoft’s figures for Visual Studio 2026 are useful if that is your IDE, but they are not universal requirements for every programming setup.
How much RAM do you need?
For Visual Studio 2026, Microsoft recommends 16 GB RAM for typical professional solutions and says the IDE works best with 64 GB. Treat those as workload tiers: 16 GB is a grounded starting point for typical professional Visual Studio projects, while 64 GB is Microsoft’s best-performance guidance for the IDE—not a requirement for every developer.

When choosing a configuration, account for your full workload rather than the IDE alone. Browsers, databases, containers, virtual machines, and multiple development tools can all compete for memory. If you expect to run several demanding tools together or work on larger solutions, compare higher-memory configurations. Check whether the laptop’s RAM is upgradeable before buying; the amount available later depends on the model.
Choose a processor for your workload
Microsoft recommends a quad-core-or-better processor for Visual Studio 2026 and says it works best with 16 or more cores. This is guidance for Visual Studio, not a ranking of specific laptop CPUs. Core count alone cannot establish which processor will perform better or how quickly a particular project will build; the cited guidance does not provide laptop-model comparisons or measured compile times.

Compare the processor and architecture in the exact laptop configuration you are considering, and check compatibility with your development tools. If you use Visual Studio on ARM64, that architecture supports Windows 11 and Visual Studio, but not every Visual Studio workload is available on ARM64.

Leave SSD space for tools and projects
Microsoft recommends an SSD for Windows and Visual Studio. Visual Studio 2026 installation size ranges from 2.5 GB to 210 GB depending on selected features; Microsoft says typical installations require 20–50 GB of free space. Those figures concern Visual Studio, not all your files or development tools.

Choose a capacity that leaves room beyond the operating system and IDE for repositories, other software, and any virtual machines or containers in your workflow. An external SSD can be an optional way to add storage or keep backups; it is not a substitute for checking the laptop’s internal capacity against your day-to-day needs.
Check display resolution and scaling
Microsoft says Visual Studio works best at 1920×1080 resolution or higher. Resolution is only part of the practical workspace: Windows display scaling changes the logical space available to windows and text. Consider the resolution and scaling together, especially if you plan to use the laptop screen for long coding sessions. A higher-resolution external monitor is an optional desk setup, not a development requirement.

Do you need a dedicated graphics card?
The cited Windows 11 and Visual Studio requirements do not establish a dedicated GPU as necessary for ordinary Visual Studio development. Check the requirements of your actual tools and workloads before paying for graphics hardware. A GPU decision should follow those needs rather than a blanket rule for all software developers.
Is an ARM laptop compatible with Visual Studio?
Visual Studio 2026 supports Windows 11 on ARM64 as well as AMD64/x64 processors, but Microsoft lists several Visual Studio workloads as unsupported on ARM64. The exceptions below are the specific workloads or tools Microsoft identifies as available within otherwise unsupported categories.

Before choosing ARM64, verify that the exact Visual Studio workload and other tools you depend on support it. Compatibility is workload-specific, so these requirements do not establish a universal winner between ARM64 and x64 laptops.
Is a Copilot+ PC necessary for development?
No such requirement is established for ordinary software development. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC criteria describe that PC category: a compatible NPU rated at 40 or more TOPS, 16 GB DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and 256 GB SSD or UFS storage. Consider those criteria if you specifically want Copilot+ features or have a local AI workload that calls for them; do not treat them as a baseline developer-laptop specification.
How to turn the guidance into a buying decision
- General coding or a lighter toolchain: Confirm Windows 11 compatibility, then match memory and SSD capacity to the editor, browser, repositories, and tools you actually use. Visual Studio guidance is not a hard requirement for other IDEs.
- Typical professional Visual Studio projects: Use Microsoft’s 16 GB RAM recommendation as a starting point. Compare more memory if your solutions or simultaneous workloads are larger.
- Heavy Visual Studio use or substantial multitasking: Microsoft’s best-performance guidance is 64 GB RAM and a CPU with 16 or more cores. Treat that as Visual Studio guidance, not a universal threshold or a complete laptop-performance verdict.
Before buying a particular model, verify its exact RAM configuration and upgradeability, SSD capacity, processor architecture, Windows support, display, and the model-specific details that matter to you. The guidance above does not compare battery life, cooling, keyboard quality, repairability, price, or availability, so assess those separately using evidence for the individual laptop.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use WSL? Check the workflow separately
Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) provides a Linux distribution and Linux command-line tools directly on Windows. Microsoft documents installing it on Windows 11 with wsl --install; distributions installed through that command use WSL 2 by default. That is a software-workflow option, not a separate laptop specification: Microsoft’s installation guide does not give RAM, CPU, or storage recommendations for WSL workloads.
