For Ubuntu, start with Canonical’s certified laptop catalog; for Lenovo, check its distribution-specific Linux compatibility resource. Among the model-specific examples with current vendor documentation are Ubuntu-certified Dell configurations, the Framework Laptop 16 with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS installation guidance, and Lenovo systems explicitly listed in Lenovo’s compatibility information.
Which laptops are good choices for installing Linux?
These are evidence-backed candidates, not a performance ranking: the available sources do not provide comparable independent tests of speed, battery life, price, or repairability. Check the exact configuration and the distribution version you plan to install before buying.

| Candidate | What the published support establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu-certified Dell laptop configurations | Canonical’s catalog lists Dell laptop configurations, including variants of the Dell 14 D14265. The catalog showed 1,419 laptop results when accessed in 2026; that live count can change. Canonical Ubuntu-certified laptops | Confirm that the specific configuration appears for your intended Ubuntu release. Certification of one configuration does not establish support for every Dell model or configuration. |
| Framework Laptop 16 | Framework publishes installation instructions for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on this model. The guide, released September 9, 2025, identifies it as an officially supported Linux distribution for the Framework Laptop 16. Framework Laptop 16 Ubuntu 24.04 LTS guide | The documented support is specific to this laptop and Ubuntu release. Follow the model-specific BIOS, audio, Secure Boot, and firmware steps. |
| Lenovo systems listed in Lenovo’s Linux resource | Lenovo provides compatibility information by Linux distribution and includes system and year entries. Lenovo Linux for Personal Systems | Choose a specific system explicitly covered for your distribution; the resource does not support a blanket claim about all Lenovo or ThinkPad laptops. |
How to check Linux compatibility before you buy
- Choose the distribution and release first. Ubuntu certification is evidence for the listed Ubuntu configuration and release, not a guarantee for Fedora, Debian, or every Linux distribution.
- Search the exact configuration. Use Canonical’s Ubuntu certification catalog and its release filters. Match the model and configuration you intend to buy, not just the manufacturer name.
- Check the vendor’s compatibility table. Lenovo’s Linux for Personal Systems resource provides distribution-specific information. For Dell, consult its Ubuntu FAQ and support guidance, which is scoped to Dell hardware and the latest Ubuntu LTS.
- Look for coverage of the hardware you rely on. Check whether the documentation addresses wireless networking, graphics, audio, suspend and resume, and any specialized hardware in the selected configuration. A general statement that Linux installs is not proof that every device or feature works identically.
- Review firmware controls and support instructions. Look for model-specific BIOS settings, Secure Boot directions, firmware updates, and troubleshooting documentation before purchase.
- Confirm local availability and terms separately. Compatibility resources do not establish your region’s stock, price, warranty, or service options; verify those with the seller and manufacturer.
What to expect when installing Ubuntu on the Framework Laptop 16
Framework’s guide is specific to installing Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on the Framework Laptop 16. It describes a fresh installation on a blank drive, so do not assume the same procedure applies to another Framework model, an existing Windows installation, or a different Linux distribution.
- Prepare the installer. Create Ubuntu installation media on a USB drive of at least 8 GB, as the guide specifies.
- Set the model’s audio option. Before installation, enter the BIOS and set “Linux Audio Compatibility” to Linux.
- Boot from the USB drive. Open the boot menu and select the installation USB.
- Install Ubuntu. If connected to a network, the guide recommends selecting updates and third-party software during installation.
- Review Secure Boot choices. Framework describes Secure Boot as optional, with trade-offs. If you intend to boot Windows, its guide warns not to disable Secure Boot. Follow the instructions for your target setup rather than treating Secure Boot as a universal obstacle.
- Check and update firmware. After installation, follow Framework’s firmware update guidance for the laptop.
Does Ubuntu certification mean every feature will work?
No certification or general compatibility listing should be read as a promise that every peripheral and feature works identically in every configuration. Dell’s Ubuntu FAQ says most peripherals work with Ubuntu, while noting that some may require additional drivers or applications. Dell’s guidance applies to Dell systems; consult support for the exact hardware and Ubuntu release.

Ubuntu’s Secure Boot documentation explains how boot binaries are validated against firmware trust keys. Secure Boot is therefore a configuration and distribution-support question, not an automatic reason to reject a laptop. - For Ubuntu with the clearest model-specific installation steps: consider the Framework Laptop 16 if Ubuntu 24.04 LTS matches your needs, and follow its dedicated guide.
- For an Ubuntu-certified Dell: select only a Dell configuration listed for the Ubuntu release you intend to use.
- For a Lenovo: use Lenovo’s distribution-specific system entries to identify a covered model instead of relying on brand-wide assumptions.
Then weigh your own priorities—such as price, warranty, service access, and local stock—after confirming compatibility. The published support resources establish examples and a verification method; they do not identify one universal best Linux laptop.
