Choose a layout that keeps the keys your work relies on, then compare feel, noise, customization, connectivity, and portability. In its July 2026 guide, RTINGS names the Keychron Q5 Max its overall programming pick; the alternatives below suit different budgets, sizes, and typing preferences.
How to choose a programming keyboard
Start with the keys you use, not the percentage printed in a product listing. The layout determines which keys are immediately available and which require a shortcut or layer. Then consider how the board feels, how much control you want over its behavior, and where you will use it.
Choose a layout around your work
- 75% or tenkeyless (TKL): Keeps the function row and arrow keys but omits the numpad. This can suit a smaller desk or someone who rarely enters numbers.
- 96%: Retains a numpad and nearly all full-size keys in a more compact footprint. It is a practical choice if you use number entry but want to save some desk space.
- Full-size: Keeps the numpad and full key set. Choose it when those keys matter more than a smaller footprint.
- 60%: Removes more dedicated keys, so you rely on layers or shortcuts for functions such as arrows and navigation. It is compact, but requires adjusting to those combinations.
Layout labels are shorthand, not a guarantee of identical key placement across brands. Check the actual key map before buying, especially if you depend on navigation keys, function-row shortcuts, or a numpad.
Consider feel, noise, and customization
Mechanical boards offer a range of switch feels, including linear and tactile options where available. Neither is objectively best for programming. If you share a workspace, consider the sound of the particular board and switch rather than assuming every mechanical keyboard is quiet. A scissor-switch board is another option if you prefer a quieter, laptop-like typing feel.

Customization can mean several different things: hot-swappable switches, key remapping, programmable firmware, layers, or macros. Check which features the exact model supports. They offer control over how a keyboard behaves; they do not guarantee faster or more productive coding.
Match the form and connection to your setup
Compare wired and wireless options, multi-device support, and portability if the keyboard will move between workspaces. For comfort, distinguish a conventional board from a split or low-profile design and check what positioning adjustments or accessories are actually included. Product shape alone does not establish a health benefit.

RTINGS’ July 2026 programming guide names the following models for different needs. Its recommendations are based on the guide’s testing, not hands-on testing for this article. Treat the shortlist as a way to narrow choices, then verify the precise layout, switch, model revision, and current listing.

What makes the Q5 Max RTINGS’ overall pick?
RTINGS’ July 2026 guide selects the Keychron Q5 Max as its overall programming keyboard. Its 96% layout keeps a numpad while using less space than a conventional full-size board, and the review describes it as wireless, hot-swappable, and compatible with QMK. That combination makes it a strong candidate for someone who wants a customizable mechanical board without giving up the numpad.

That recommendation is not a universal verdict. If you do not use a numpad, a 75% or TKL keyboard may fit your desk better; if you value a smaller board above dedicated keys, a 60% model may suit you. If you prefer quieter scissor-switch typing, the MX Keys S is a distinct alternative rather than a mechanical substitute.
What the testing evidence does—and does not—show
RTINGS says it bought and tested 299 keyboards and describes a standardized test bench with instrumented testing. That gives its dated recommendations a testing basis, but it does not establish which keyboard every programmer will prefer. No reliable population statistic about programmers’ keyboard preferences, typing hours, or the health effects of different keyboard types is established by the sources cited here.

Likewise, ZSA’s product information documents the Moonlander’s split positioning and Oryx customization, but manufacturer descriptions and testimonials are not independent evidence that a split keyboard prevents or treats pain or repetitive strain. Choose a layout for its fit and adjustability, not on an unverified health promise.
