Unified Remote is the closest KDE Connect alternative if you mainly want to use your phone as a computer’s wireless mouse, keyboard, or media remote. If you need to view and operate a computer remotely for access or support, compare broader remote-desktop tools such as RustDesk and AnyDesk instead. The right choice depends on your computer’s operating system, your phone, and whether you need local input controls or a full remote session.
First, choose between a phone remote and remote desktop
These tools solve two related but different problems. A phone-as-remote-input app sends controls such as mouse movement, keystrokes, and media commands to a computer; it is useful when the computer is nearby and you want to control it from the couch or give a presentation. A remote-desktop app is designed to connect to and operate a computer through a remote session, which is a better fit for access or support when you need to see the computer’s desktop.

KDE Connect already does more than trackpad input. Its project site describes file and link sharing, phone notifications and replies, custom commands, media controls, a presentation remote, and a virtual trackpad. If those features cover your needs, switching may not be necessary. KDE Connect
Compare the alternatives by job and platform
| Tool | Best fit | Phone and computer platforms stated by the publisher | Important setup or access caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unified Remote | Phone-based mouse, keyboard, media, screen, and app controls | Phone apps: Android, iPhone, and iPad. Computer clients: Windows, Mac, Linux, and Raspberry Pi. | Verify current client requirements and feature availability for your particular devices. |
| RustDesk | Broader remote desktop and remote access, including a self-hosting option | Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Web. | Self-hosting requires configuration on your infrastructure; the documentation distinguishes a free open-source server from a paid Professional Server. |
| AnyDesk | Remote access and support, subject to operating-system and device restrictions | Platform availability varies. Its documentation says Linux incoming sessions require Xorg, while Wayland supports outgoing sessions only; iOS/iPadOS remote control is unavailable. | Android input can require a device-specific control plugin. Unified Remote: the closest match for wireless input
Unified Remote is the most direct alternative in this comparison if your goal is to control a nearby computer from a phone rather than establish a full remote-desktop workflow. Its official site lists mouse and keyboard controls, media and screen controls, file browsing, power controls including Wake-on-LAN, and more than 100 app remotes. That “100+” figure is the publisher’s own product count, not an independently audited measure. Unified Remote
The site lists apps for Android, iPhone, and iPad, and computer clients for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Raspberry Pi. Check its current client and phone-app requirements for your specific operating system; the listed platforms alone do not establish compatibility with every version or configuration.

RustDesk: for a broader remote-desktop connection
RustDesk is a better fit when you want to connect to and operate a computer remotely, rather than use a phone chiefly as a convenient input device. Its documentation lists Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Web clients. It also describes self-hosting on your own infrastructure and peer-to-peer connections with end-to-end encryption based on NaCl. These are documented design and product claims, not independent security or performance test results. RustDesk documentation

Choose it when
- You need remote desktop or remote support rather than just mouse and keyboard input.
- You want the option to host the service infrastructure yourself and are prepared to configure it.
- You need clients spanning the operating systems listed in RustDesk’s documentation.
AnyDesk: check operating-system and device limits first
AnyDesk is a remote-access and support tool, but its mobile and desktop capabilities are not uniform across platforms. On Android, the operating system does not allow remote input by default. AnyDesk’s support documentation says many device models require a separate control plugin, and the input available can vary by device. It specifies Android 7.0 or later for Android remote control. Confirm support for the exact phone model and app combination before relying on it. AnyDesk Android support
Linux users should pay close attention to the session type: AnyDesk says incoming Linux sessions require Xorg, while Wayland supports outgoing sessions only. Its supported-platform documentation says remote control of iOS and iPadOS devices is unavailable because of vendor restrictions, and that an outgoing client requires payment. These limits can make AnyDesk unsuitable for a particular direction of connection even when an app is available. AnyDesk supported operating systems

Choose it when
- You need remote access or support and have verified that both endpoints support the intended connection.
- You have confirmed any Android control-plugin requirement for the specific device.
- Your Linux session type or iOS/iPadOS use does not conflict with the documented restrictions.
How to decide
- For a nearby computer and phone-as-remote use, start with Unified Remote. Its listed controls most closely match the mouse, keyboard, media, and app-remotes role.
- For viewing and controlling a remote desktop, compare RustDesk and AnyDesk. Choose based on platform support, deployment preference, and the connection direction you need.
- Check both ends before installing. Confirm the phone app, computer client, OS version, Linux session type, and any Android permissions or plugins in the current official documentation.
- Decide how you want access handled. RustDesk documents a self-hosting path; evaluate the configuration and current licensing. For other tools, review their current access and account requirements rather than assuming every feature is free.
