We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie is the best next game for most people who have finished Once Upon A KATAMARI. It is a modern version of the 2005 sequel, keeps the series’ roll-up-anything premise, and adds five Young King challenges, an untimed Eternal Mode and selfie mode. Choose Katamari Damacy REROLL instead if you want to experience the original game that established the series or prefer to begin at the start of its modern releases.

Why We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie is the clearest next game
It is the direct sequel in modern form
We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie is described by Bandai Namco as a faithful reproduction of the original We Love Katamari, which debuted in 2005, updated for modern platforms. That makes it the most straightforward continuation for someone who has just played Once Upon A KATAMARI: you move back one major step in the series rather than jumping to a different style or a spin-off.

You control a small prince-sized character and roll a Katamari that gathers objects as it grows. The appeal is the changing scale: ordinary objects become useful first, then larger and stranger items become possible targets. The official description also emphasizes simple analog-stick controls, so the game does not require learning a complex control scheme before you can start collecting.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Its additions answer common reasons to keep playing
- Five Young King challenges: extra objectives built around the Young King, giving experienced players more specific tasks beyond the main progression.
- Eternal Mode: stages can be played without time limits, making this the strongest choice if you want to explore and collect at your own pace.
- Selfie mode: a camera-focused feature that lets you capture the Katamari and its surroundings.
- Quality-of-life updates: the modern reproduction includes changes intended to make the older game fit contemporary platforms.
Bandai Namco’s February 8, 2023 announcement presents the game as an experience for both newcomers and long-time fans. Associate Brand Manager Carolyn Chang said the company’s view was that it combines “whimsical and still novel gameplay, a memorable soundtrack, and an unforgettable cast of characters.” That is promotional language from the publisher, not an independent review, but it explains the elements Bandai Namco wants returning players to recognize.
When Katamari Damacy REROLL is the better choice
You want to start with the first game
Katamari Damacy REROLL is the modern edition of the original Katamari Damacy. It updates the graphics and recreates the cutscenes while preserving the basic roll-up-objects premise and analog-stick control style. If you care about seeing how the series’ world and rules were introduced, this is the right order: original first, sequel second.
Playing it after Once Upon A KATAMARI also gives you useful context for recurring ideas in the series. The objective is not to manage an inventory, build a conventional character or fight through a traditional action level. You steer the Katamari itself, search for objects that are small enough to collect, and use the resulting growth to reach larger targets. The simplicity of that loop is the point, and the official page identifies it as the series’ defining hook.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose it for a historical starting point, not for extra modes
The available publisher material specifically highlights updated graphics and recreated cutscenes for Katamari Damacy REROLL. It does not establish the same set of five Young King challenges, Eternal Mode or selfie mode that is listed for We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie. If bonus modes and untimed collecting are your deciding factors, select the sequel instead. If your priority is understanding the first release before moving forward, Katamari Damacy REROLL is the more coherent purchase.
How Once Upon A KATAMARI changes the decision
Once Upon A KATAMARI launched on October 24, 2025, according to Bandai Namco’s launch announcement. Its official materials describe several newer systems:
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Time-period stages: levels are themed around different periods, giving the setting a historical structure rather than a single contemporary backdrop.
- Character customization: you can alter the character used in the game, adding a personal layer to the familiar rolling action.
- A magnet: this tool attracts nearby objects, changing how you position the Katamari and collect items.
- KatamariBall: an online or CPU competition mode for players who want versus play instead of only stage-based collection.
Those additions matter because they reveal what you may or may not be trying to follow. If you mainly enjoyed the core act of steering and growing a Katamari, either older REROLL release returns to that foundation. If the magnet, customization or KatamariBall were the reason you liked the 2025 game most, neither recommendation should be described as a direct replacement for every new system. We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie is the closer sequel recommendation, but it is still a reproduction of a 2005 game with its own feature set.
The official Once Upon A KATAMARI page and the July 31, 2025 announcement are the appropriate references for the newer game’s systems. They should not be read as evidence that every feature carries over to the REROLL titles.

Choose by the kind of player you are
If you want the most natural chronological route
- Play Katamari Damacy REROLL to experience the first game in its modern edition.
- Move to We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie, the modern sequel reproduction.
- Return to Once Upon A KATAMARI for its time-period stages, magnet, customization and KatamariBall systems.
This order is optional. It is useful when series history matters more than immediately following your newest game.
If you want to keep the momentum from Once Upon A KATAMARI
Start with We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie. Its sequel position makes it the closest recommendation in the available official descriptions, and its added modes give you reasons to stay after completing the main objectives.

If you dislike timers
Select We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie for Eternal Mode. The publisher specifically describes this mode as removing time limits. That makes it suitable for players who want to inspect a stage, experiment with object routes or simply grow a Katamari without a countdown shaping every decision.
If you want the original premise with the least extra framing
Choose Katamari Damacy REROLL. Its purpose is clear: preserve the first game, refresh its presentation and recreate its cutscenes. You are buying an origin point rather than a package centered on new challenge modes.
If you mainly want competitive play
Do not assume either REROLL title reproduces Once Upon A KATAMARI’s KatamariBall. The 2025 game’s official materials identify KatamariBall as online or CPU competition, while the cited REROLL pages emphasize their respective single-player structures and additions. Check the current edition description for any multiplayer feature you consider essential.
Platform and edition checklist
The publisher’s pages cover Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC releases across the two REROLL games, but the exact combination can differ. Use this checklist before placing an order:
- Open the official page for the specific game: We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie or Katamari Damacy REROLL.
- Match the platform label to your hardware. “Console and PC” is not a guarantee that every storefront carries the same edition or release options.
- Check whether you are selecting a digital or physical version. Bandai Namco’s official store lists physical Katamari editions, but inventory and regional availability can change.
- Confirm the game title carefully. Katamari Damacy REROLL and We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie are separate releases with different positions in the series.
- Review the storefront’s language, region, controller and online-service notes before payment, especially if you are buying for a child account or a shared console.
The official Bandai Namco Katamari store is a useful reference for the publisher’s physical offerings. It does not establish stock at independent retailers or guarantee availability in every country.

Switch 2 owners: separate the console version from the older releases
Bandai Namco announced a Switch 2 version of Once Upon A KATAMARI for October 8, 2026, with mouse controls and smoother performance. The same announcement covers separately sold Rolling LIVE Highlights downloadable content. Read the details in the July 15, 2026 announcement before treating a Switch 2 listing as equivalent to a standard Switch purchase.
The announcement also says that transferring a Switch save requires no save data already to exist on the Switch 2 system. In practical terms, check the destination console before initiating the transfer; an existing save can prevent the stated transfer condition from being met. This detail applies to the announced Switch 2 version and should not be generalized to every Katamari title or every save-transfer method.
If your goal is specifically to play an older REROLL game on Switch 2, verify its current compatibility, edition name and storefront notes separately. The Switch 2 announcement concerns Once Upon A KATAMARI and its DLC, not a blanket upgrade promise for the entire Katamari catalog.

The shared foundation
Both REROLL games use the series’ recognizable analog-stick approach: steer a rolling Katamari, collect objects that fit, and grow large enough to reach new targets. That means the fundamental appeal should feel legible to anyone coming from Once Upon A KATAMARI without requiring a separate tutorial in a new genre.

- Katamari Damacy REROLL is anchored to the original game’s presentation, including updated graphics and recreated cutscenes.
- We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie is anchored to the sequel and adds named challenge and convenience features.
- The newer game’s time-period structure, magnet, character customization and KatamariBall belong to Once Upon A KATAMARI’s feature set; the cited REROLL descriptions do not say that all of them return.
- No authoritative publisher ranking establishes a single winner across every Katamari title. The recommendation therefore depends on whether you value sequel continuity, series history, untimed play or a particular platform.
A practical two-game plan
Plan A: sequel first, then origin
Buy We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie first if you want the least disruptive next step. Begin with its standard challenges, then use Eternal Mode to revisit stages without a timer. Try the Young King challenges after you understand the regular objectives, and use selfie mode when you want to document unusual scenes. Once you have exhausted that structure, play Katamari Damacy REROLL to see the foundation it follows.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Plan B: origin first, then sequel
Choose Katamari Damacy REROLL first if you value chronology. Treat it as an introduction to the series’ basic control language and object-scaling premise. Follow it with We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie to experience how the sequel is presented in its modern reproduction and to use the added modes.
Plan C: one purchase only
If you will buy only one game, use this rule: pick We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie for the direct follow-up and Eternal Mode; pick Katamari Damacy REROLL for the original-game experience. Do not pay extra for a bundle or physical edition unless the included platform, region and contents are explicitly listed for your system.
What is not established by the available official information
There are no directly relevant named sales, review or player statistics in the official pages cited for this recommendation. That means a popularity-based claim such as “the highest-rated” or “the best-selling” Katamari game would not be supported here. Likewise, the evidence does not provide a controlled comparison of loading times, frame rates, stage counts or difficulty across the titles, so those should not be presented as measured advantages.
The strongest factual basis is narrower and more useful: We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie is the modern sequel reproduction with five Young King challenges, Eternal Mode, selfie mode and quality-of-life changes; Katamari Damacy REROLL is the modern version of the original with updated graphics and recreated cutscenes; and platform listings must be checked per game.
Final recommendation
For the reader who has just completed Once Upon A KATAMARI, buy We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie first. It is the most natural sequel path and the only one of these two recommendations whose official description explicitly adds an untimed mode, extra Young King challenges and selfie mode. Choose Katamari Damacy REROLL when your priority is the original game, chronological context or the simplest way to begin the series’ modern catalog. Before checkout, verify your exact platform, region and edition on the current official listing.
