Start with a balanced daily trainer such as the ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 28, consider the softer GEL-NIMBUS 28 if you prefer a plusher ride, and look at Nike Structure 26 if you want a stability-oriented option. These are different choices, not a universal ranking; fit, ride preference, support needs, surface and budget should decide between them.
Three jogging trainers to consider
The shortlist below is for road running and routine daily miles. Feature descriptions for the ASICS and Nike models come from their manufacturers; they are not independent head-to-head test results.

| Model | Best fit for | What the manufacturer says |
|---|---|---|
| ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 28 | A balanced daily trainer for easy jogs and varied distances | ASICS describes it as a versatile trainer for short jogs or longer distances, with FF BLAST MAX foam, PureGEL heel technology and FLUIDRIDE transitions. ASICS model comparison |
| ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 28 | Runners who prefer a softer, more cushioned sensation for daily miles or longer runs | ASICS describes a softer, more cushioned ride, with FF BLAST PLUS foam and HYBRID ASICSGRIP outsole technology. ASICS model comparison |
| Nike Structure 26 | Runners seeking a stability-oriented design with cushioning | Nike describes it as a stability-and-cushioning option for routine training and long runs, featuring a midfoot support system and ReactX midsole. This is Nike’s positioning, not a recommendation that every runner needs added support. Nike announcement |
There is no single winner across all priorities. In Outside’s June 2026 guide, which says it evaluated more than 100 new models over thousands of miles with 27 testers, the ASICS Superblast 3 was its best overall daily trainer, Hoka Mach 7 its runner-up and balanced daily trainer, Nike Vomero Plus its best cushioned trainer, and Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 its best stability pick. Those are Outside’s judgments based on its reported evaluation, not universal results. Outside’s 2026 guide

Choose by fit before brand or cushioning
A shoe should feel secure without rubbing, pinching or slipping. Comfort is personal, so try more than one model if possible and assess the feel while moving, not just the brand or the description on the box. A running-specialty store may be able to help with fitting; expert guidance can be particularly useful if you are starting from scratch. Runner’s World shoe guide and Tom’s Guide buying advice
#1 Best Overall
- Athletic mesh upper with durable leather overlays for added dimension & midfoot support
- Charged+ midsole cushioning provides unmatched softness & all-day comfort
- Durable rubber outsole provides traction & durability with strategically-placed flex grooves for proper toe-off
- Upper contains at least 30% recycled content
- Weight: 10.2 oz , Lace type: Standard tie, NEUTRAL: For runners who need a balance of flexibility & cushioning
- Check the fit: Look for a secure feel without pressure points or heel movement. Try multiple styles where available.
- Notice the ride: Decide whether you like a softer, more protective sensation or a more balanced, responsive one. A spec sheet cannot determine which feels better to you.
- Consider support as a preference: Neutral and stability-oriented shoes are options to compare, not a diagnosis of your gait. Support designs have evolved, so do not assume every stability shoe feels rigid or that you need one based on a general rule.
Match the shoe to your runs
For short easy jogs and everyday versatility
The GEL-CUMULUS 28 is the most straightforward starting point in this shortlist if you want one road shoe for regular easy runs and occasional longer distances. ASICS positions the Cumulus as versatile; use that as a description of its intended role, then judge its fit and ride in person.
For a softer, more cushioned ride
The GEL-NIMBUS 28 is the option to try if you prefer a plusher sensation for daily miles or longer outings. More cushioning is a feel and use preference, not proof of better performance or injury prevention.
Rank #2
- THIS MEN'S SHOE IS FOR: Runners or walkers focused on improving their fitness, the Revel 8 offers a smooth, distraction-free ride to power through your workouts. Its unique mesh upper combines style and performance, giving you the casual look you want without compromising on the support and comfort you need. This Brooks Revel 8 has been granted the APMA Seal of Acceptance. Predecessor: Revel 7.
- ENGINEERED FOR COMFORT: Adaptable DNA Loft v2 cushioning provides underfoot comfort for any activity that adapts to your stride, weight, and speed to help protect you by deflecting impact away from your body.
- BREATHABLE MESH UPPER: The updated engineered mesh upper offers superior structure, a sleek design, and enhanced breathability, keeping your feet cool and comfortable during every run or workout.
- ROADTACK OUTSOLE: The RoadTack rubber outsole is lightweight, durable, and designed for optimal rebound, providing superior traction and responsiveness to keep you moving with confidence.
- VERSATILE DESIGN: A sleek design that’s ready for both your toughest workouts and casual outings, effortlessly transitioning from run to rest while maintaining a stylish, modern edge.
For a stability-oriented option
Nike positions Structure 26 for runners who want stability and cushioning in routine training and long runs. Compare how its support feels against a neutral design rather than choosing it because of a diagnosis made from an article. Nike’s statements about its design are manufacturer claims, not independent proof that it prevents injury.
For a broader shortlist
Other guides identify additional category choices. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 page names ASICS Novablast 6 as its beginner pick and Nike Pegasus 42 as a value pick. It reports a men’s weight of 9.2 oz and an 8 mm drop for Novablast 6, and 10.8 oz and a 10 mm drop for Pegasus 42; these are that guide’s specifications and may vary by size or market. Compare more than softness
Use a few practical filters when two shoes seem appealing. Weight and heel-to-toe drop can be useful comparison details for some runners, but no single drop is ideal for everyone. Price and availability also vary by country, retailer and date, and a guide-time price is not a guaranteed current price. Check the current listing for your market and size before buying.
- Fit and comfort: Does the shoe stay secure without rubbing or pinching?
- Ride: Do you prefer soft cushioning or a more balanced feel?
- Support: Do you want a neutral design or a stability-oriented option?
- Weight and drop: Compare published model specifications only when they matter to your preferences, and check the relevant size and market.
- Surface: These recommendations focus on roads and daily running. Muddy trails or technical terrain call for a trail-shoe comparison, not an assumption that a road trainer is suitable.
- Price and stock: Confirm local availability and current pricing; model generations and listings change.
What running shoes should you buy?
If you want a balanced daily option, try the GEL-CUMULUS 28. If you know you prefer a softer, more cushioned ride, try the GEL-NIMBUS 28. If you specifically want a stability-oriented design, compare the Nike Structure 26 with a neutral shoe. Before choosing, make sure the fit works for you and the shoe suits the surfaces you run on. No shoe in this shortlist is established here as a way to prevent injuries or deliver a quantified performance improvement.
