For a straightforward Mac terminal, consider Ghostty; for command blocks and integrated AI, look at Warp; for multi-agent workspaces, cmux; and for configurable terminals across operating systems, compare WezTerm and kitty. The options below are a shortlist, not a hands-on performance ranking.
How to choose an iTerm2 alternative
Start with the job you need the terminal to do. A terminal emulator can stay focused on running shell sessions, or add features such as saved workflows, AI assistance, remote-file tools, or workspace management. Those additions can reduce context switching, but may also bring different account, privacy, configuration, or compatibility requirements.

- Choose for workflow, not a speed claim. Product descriptions can indicate what an app is designed to offer, but they do not establish which one will render or respond faster for your workload.
- Check compatibility before switching. If you rely on a shell, TTY behavior, terminal protocol, SSH setup, or a particular macOS feature, verify it in the project’s current documentation.
- Decide how much built-in interface you want. Tabs, splits, command blocks, and integrated tools can be convenient; a minimal terminal may suit users who already rely on tmux or a window manager.
- Consider accounts and data handling. Cloud, team, and AI features can have requirements beyond installing a terminal. Check product terms and privacy details before using sensitive work.
Product Hunt’s alternatives page names Ghostty, Warp, cmux, jebi, and Pluto Door. It is a platform-curated list, not an exhaustive catalog or benchmark. A September 2026 comparison from Oxide Terminal also covers WezTerm, kitty, and Alacritty; because that comparison is published by another terminal vendor, use it as a dated orientation and check official project documentation for a deciding technical detail.

How the main alternatives differ
Ghostty: a lean terminal with strong defaults
Ghostty is the option to investigate if you want a focused terminal rather than a broad collaboration workspace. Product Hunt emphasizes GPU rendering, responsiveness, and defaults. Those are product-positioning points, not independently measured proof that Ghostty will be faster in your setup. Check its current operating-system support and compatibility with the terminal features your tools expect.

Warp: built-in workflows and AI
Warp is aimed at people who want more than a shell window: Product Hunt highlights command blocks, reusable workflows, integrated AI, and cross-platform use. These features may suit a workflow built around repeatable commands or team collaboration. They also make account requirements, cloud behavior, data controls, and plan limits important parts of the decision.
Warp’s official pricing page, accessed October 7, 2026, listed the following prices. Treat them as a dated snapshot because software pricing and plan limits can change.

cmux: workspace attention for coding agents
Product Hunt positions cmux for coordinating coding-agent sessions and drawing attention to workspace activity. That makes it a candidate if keeping track of several agents is the problem you want the terminal to solve. The available description does not establish compatibility with every shell or agent tool, so check those integrations before moving an existing workflow.

jebi: an on-device assistance approach
Product Hunt describes jebi as offering on-device assistance without requiring an API key. That is a useful lead if local processing is important, but it is not enough by itself to establish how all data is handled or what the product requires. Review its current privacy and technical documentation before relying on it for confidential work.
Pluto Door: remote work in a combined workspace
Product Hunt describes Pluto Door as bringing SSH, file browsing, and editing together. It may appeal if you routinely move between remote shells and files and prefer those tools in one workspace. Confirm that it supports your remote setup and that its security model meets your needs.

WezTerm, kitty, and Alacritty: configurable alternatives
A September 2026 Oxide Terminal comparison lists WezTerm for macOS, Linux, Windows, and BSD, and describes its configuration as Lua-based. It lists kitty for macOS, Linux, and BSD, configured through kitty.conf; and Alacritty for macOS, Linux, Windows, and BSD, configured through TOML. The same comparison describes Alacritty as omitting built-in tabs and splits. These are details from a third-party comparison, not a substitute for checking each project’s current documentation—particularly if platform support or multiplexing determines your choice.
Is a third-party terminal worth it over macOS Terminal?
The decision depends on what you are missing. One reader posed the question of why to use Ghostty or iTerm2 instead of the built-in Mac terminal; that individual question does not establish how common the concern is. In practical terms, compare the specific features you need: session and profile management, workflow automation, remote access, AI assistance, or a different approach to workspace organization. If the built-in terminal already supports your shell work and you do not need an alternative’s distinguishing features, switching may add little value.
Quick Recap
What to verify before switching
- List the features you actually use. Include profiles, session restoration, triggers, inline images, scripting, tmux integration, SSH workflows, and any terminal-protocol requirements. A September 2026 Oxide comparison lists these among iTerm2’s capabilities, but verify a decisive feature in current iTerm2 documentation.
- Confirm operating-system support. If you need more than macOS, check the project’s current platform matrix rather than relying solely on a dated comparison.
- Test your shell and remote workflow. Check TTY behavior, SSH connections, shell integrations, and any tools that depend on terminal-specific behavior.
- Review privacy and account requirements. This matters particularly for apps that include AI, cloud, or team features, and for anyone working with sensitive material.
- Try the shortlist against a real task. Use the same shell, project, and remote session where possible. Judge whether the workflow fits; do not assume a product-positioning claim predicts performance on your machine.
