Halide emphasizes still photography and rendering choices, ProCamera spans photo and video tools, and Obscura focuses on tactile controls. On iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple’s Camera app now also documents manual aperture, shutter speed, and white balance controls plus a histogram, so a third-party app is not automatically necessary.
Which manual camera app should you choose?

What controls matter for your photography?
Manual photography is useful when you want to make a specific choice repeatable—for example, holding shutter speed steady across a sequence, setting focus deliberately, or choosing a white balance rather than accepting the camera’s automatic interpretation. Before choosing an app, check whether it gives you the controls you use and whether they are available in the shooting mode you need.
- Shutter speed and ISO: Look for both if you want to balance motion rendering and exposure yourself.
- Focus: Manual focus can help when you want a consistent focal plane; focus peaking or other assistance can make precise adjustment easier.
- White balance: Useful when consistent color across several frames matters.
- Exposure aids: A histogram, zebras, or bracketing can help you judge exposure or capture a range of exposures, but their availability varies by app.
- Capture format: Decide whether you need RAW or Apple ProRAW, a rendered image, or a choice among processing styles.
Interface matters as much as the checklist. An app that exposes a control clearly may suit you better than one with a longer feature list but a slower-to-understand layout.

When is Apple’s Camera app enough?
Apple’s documented manual-control baseline is model-specific. Its current guide describes manual aperture, shutter speed, and white balance plus a histogram on iPhone 18 Pro models. That should not be generalized to every iPhone: confirm your exact model and software before assuming the native Camera app either has or lacks a given control.
If your phone has the native controls you need, the built-in app is the simplest option for immediate capture. If it does not, or you want a different interface, processing choice, or specialist feature, compare third-party apps against that specific gap.

How should you think about RAW and Apple ProRAW?
RAW and ProRAW are related but not interchangeable promises of an unprocessed image. Apple says ProRAW combines information from a standard RAW format with iPhone image processing, giving more room for later adjustment of exposure, color, and white balance. Apple also notes that the retained image information makes ProRAW files larger.

What else do you need for long exposures?
A tripod can help keep framing stable during long exposures, but it is optional and is not required to use manual controls. Whether you need one depends on the exposure and the stability your shot demands.
