iOS 27 has been available since September 14, 2026, and most of its useful additions need nothing more than an update. The big exception is Siri AI and the other Apple Intelligence tools, which need newer hardware and a supported language and region. This guide sorts the features worth trying by what your iPhone can actually do, based on Apple’s own iOS 27 documentation and release announcement. It reports what Apple says each feature does and doesn’t claim independent testing.
First: confirm your iPhone can run iOS 27
Apple lists the iPhone 11 and later, including the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), as compatible with iOS 27. To check your model, open Settings > General > About. To install, go to Settings > General > Software Update and choose the latest version offered for your phone.

Apple Intelligence eligibility, per Apple’s iPhone guide, covers the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later. For features outside this table, such as captions or family controls, check the exact feature’s requirements before assuming it works on your phone.

Extra-large widgets
Apple documents widgets in an extra-large size that show more information at a glance. It’s a simple way to turn a Home Screen page into a dashboard for calendar, weather, or whatever you check most.

The Liquid Glass slider
If the translucent look is hard to read, Apple provides a slider that adjusts Liquid Glass from ultraclear to fully tinted. Move it toward tinted for legibility and toward clear for the airy look. It’s a good first change if the new design felt busy.

Notify Me
Safari’s Notify Me can watch a webpage for a change, such as a price drop or a restock, and alert you. It’s useful for pages you’d otherwise keep refreshing. An alert only tells you the page changed, so it doesn’t guarantee stock or a price you’ll like.

Tab grouping by topic
On Apple Intelligence-capable iPhones, Safari can group open tabs by topic. This helps if you hoard dozens of tabs across research, shopping, and reading.
Photos and Camera
- Reframe photos and extend borders. Apple lists both as new editing options. These are AI-assisted, so they need a supported iPhone.
- More precise Clean Up. Apple says the tool for removing distractions is more precise. It is also tied to Apple Intelligence.
- Save a video frame as a photo. Useful for pulling a still from a clip.
- Better iCloud Shared Albums. Apple lists full-resolution sharing plus additional filtering and reactions.
- Pin Camera controls above the viewfinder. Keep the settings you reach for most within a tap.
Siri AI: the headline feature, with conditions
Apple describes Siri AI as a conversational assistant with broad world knowledge and an understanding of your personal context. Per Apple, it can search personal content such as photos, email, or notes and take actions across apps. Apple’s guide also documents writing assistance and Visual Intelligence in Camera. The September 14 announcement adds onscreen awareness and an app for continuing conversations across Apple devices.

Who can use it
- It is labeled beta and starts in English.
- It requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone (15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 or later).
- Apple said French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support is coming in October 2026. That month is now underway, so check whether your language has appeared in Settings.
- Siri AI is not initially available in the EU on iOS, and Apple Intelligence features are unavailable in China while regulatory requirements are addressed.
- Apple notes some features that use server models have daily usage limits, and the guide also mentions age conditions.
If your phone can’t run it, you aren’t missing the rest of iOS 27. Most items in this article work without it.
Accessibility and communication
- Automatic synced subtitles for video, and translation of existing captions.
- Richer VoiceOver image descriptions for people who rely on spoken descriptions of pictures.
- FaceTime translated captions in supported situations, which is handy for calls across languages.
Apple notes availability varies, so test them in your language and region.

Family, health, Maps, and Home
- Family: child app and website controls, and expanded Communication Safety.
- Health: Cycle Tracking can log menopause and perimenopause symptoms and notify you when logged patterns are suggestive. This is symptom logging and educational support, not a diagnosis. Talk to a clinician about concerns.
- Maps: Local Lists, in the U.S., and enhanced Flyover.
- Home: AI-assisted summaries and search for selected HomeKit Secure Video footage.
Should you buy a new iPhone for this?
Probably not. Most tips here run on any compatible iPhone. An upgrade only makes sense if you specifically want Siri AI or Apple’s AI editing tools and your phone isn’t eligible. In that case, verify the model, your language and region, and current availability first, since Apple’s rollout is still expanding.
One more note on speed: Apple’s September announcement includes performance-testing footnotes on prerelease iOS 27 devices. Those results apply only to Apple’s stated test setups, so don’t expect them on every compatible iPhone.
