The July 2026 comparison names the Samsung 990 PRO With Heatsink as its overall pick, the Kingston FURY Renegade With Heatsink as its value choice, and the WD_BLACK SN850P for buyers prioritizing official licensing or an 8TB option. Those are specification- and price-based recommendations, not claims of hands-on testing; your best choice depends on the exact heatsink SKU, capacity, local price, and warranty.
What makes an SSD compatible with PS5?
Sony supports PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs; M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported. Sony lists capacities from 250GB to 8TB and recommends sequential read speeds of at least 5,500MB/s. That speed is a recommendation, not a guarantee that every game will perform like it does on the console’s built-in storage. Sony cautions that game performance can vary, even with an M.2 drive exceeding the recommended speed.

Cooling and dimensions matter just as much as the drive’s headline speed. Sony requires effective heat dissipation and sets limits for the complete drive-plus-cooling assembly:

- Supported drive lengths: 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110mm.
- Maximum width: 25mm.
- Maximum thickness: 11.25mm.
Check the exact model and heatsink dimensions before buying. A drive that meets Sony’s published specifications is not guaranteed to work or to match the console’s internal SSD performance.

Best PS5 SSD picks
The following picks come from a comparison that checked specifications and prices on July 15, 2026. Its rankings are not based on reported hands-on testing, and prices are a dated snapshot rather than a promise of current availability.
| Drive | Best fit | Capacity options in the comparison | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung 990 PRO With Heatsink | Overall pick | 1TB, 2TB, 4TB | Confirm the heatsink-equipped SKU and compare the price at your chosen capacity. |
| Kingston FURY Renegade With Heatsink | Value choice | 1TB, 2TB, 4TB | Value depends on current local price; verify the precise heatsink model. |
| WD_BLACK SN850P | Officially licensed positioning or an 8TB option | Up to 8TB | Choose for licensing or capacity priorities, not an assumption that it is faster than alternatives. |
| Crucial T500 With Heatsink | Additional option to compare | Not stated in the July 2026 comparison | Compare exact SKU, fit, warranty, and local price. |
| Lexar NM790 With Heatsink | Additional option to compare | Not stated in the July 2026 comparison | Compare exact SKU, fit, warranty, and local price. |

TechRadar also includes the Samsung 990 Pro among high-end PS5 SSDs and identifies a heatsink-equipped configuration; its testing and findings belong to that publication, not to the comparison above. Kingston publishes its own PS5 compatibility guidance, and any benchmark figures it provides should be treated as Kingston’s claims rather than independent PS5 test results.

How to choose the right capacity and model
Start with the space you need
Pick a capacity within Sony’s 250GB–8TB range based on how many games you want installed at once. An M.2 SSD can store, download, update, and play PS5 games. USB extended storage can archive PS5 games, but you must move them back to console or M.2 storage to play them.

Compare like with like
When checking prices, compare the same capacity and the exact heatsink-equipped SKU. Include warranty duration, endurance limit, full assembly dimensions, and local price in the comparison. Specifications such as sequential speed and endurance are manufacturer ratings, not independent PS5 performance results. Once a drive meets Sony’s recommendation, treat higher advertised speed as secondary to fit, warranty, and value rather than assuming it will make games load faster.
