When Orshot is a good fit
- You want a browser-based editor delivered as a service rather than an engine installed in your infrastructure.
- Your team prefers an iframe or framework component over maintaining editor runtime integrations.
- Managed storage, user accounts and rendering are useful parts of the product rather than systems you already operate.
- Your requirements are primarily web-based and you can validate the current mobile and offline story with Orshot.

IMG.LY describes CE.SDK as a creative editor embedded in the buyer’s app. Its capability material says the editor runs on the buyer’s domain and infrastructure, offers a complete interface as well as a headless API, and can use storage, digital-asset-management or CDN services selected by the buyer. Browser editing uses WebAssembly and WebGL; the same engine is described as running on mobile and server-side with Node.js.
IMG.LY’s own description is explicit: “The editor runs inside your app, not as a sandboxed third-party surface, so you own the UI, the domain, and the data.” That is vendor-authored positioning, not an independent assessment, but it clearly states the operating model.
Choose CE.SDK when control matters
- You need a deeply branded interface and control over the editor’s domain and application shell.
- Your roadmap includes web plus native iOS, Android, desktop or server workflows; support varies by SDK, so confirm the exact target combination.
- You already have storage, authentication, DAM, CDN and rendering pipelines, or want to build them to your own requirements.
- You need a headless route for automated editing or server-side processing in addition to a full UI.
Budgeting CE.SDK
IMG.LY’s current pricing description says licensing is customized by platform, components and AI features rather than sold as a public per-seat tier. The pricing page offers a 30-day free trial with a trial key. Request a quote that names every platform, component, deployment environment and AI capability you intend to ship; do not compare an unspecified CE.SDK quote directly with a hosted starting price.

Polotno SDK: a web-first self-hosted comparison
Polotno presents its SDK as self-hosted creative infrastructure for web products. Its pages describe rendering in the browser, under Node, or through an optional Polotno Cloud Render API. It also says teams retain control over templates, assets, design data, permissions and rendering.
Polotno is worth shortlisting when your product is web-first and you want ownership of application data and rendering choices. Its own comparison positions IMG.LY as covering more native platforms, so a mobile or desktop requirement should be tested against both vendors’ current support matrices. Independent feature parity and pricing verification were not established here; obtain a current technical and commercial proposal.
How to choose: a practical decision framework
1. Start with deployment
- List every surface you must ship: browser, iOS, Android, desktop and server-side jobs.
- Mark which surfaces must work offline or inside a native shell.
- Eliminate products that cannot support a required surface in the exact license you can buy.
2. Assign data and service ownership
Document who owns project files, source assets, generated exports, user accounts, backups, retention and deletion. 4. Test the real editing workload
Use representative templates and assets, not a blank demo. Measure initial load, large-image handling, font behavior, export fidelity, autosave recovery, concurrent editing if required, and the time needed to implement your brand controls. Vendor demo timings are not general benchmarks.
5. Compare the contract, not a headline price
Put platform licenses, components, AI features, render volume, storage, support, overages and renewal terms into one worksheet. Orshot’s published starting figure and IMG.LY’s quote-based model describe different commercial units; Polotno’s current quote must be checked directly.
Screenshoting editor demos and regression states
Capture the same template, viewport and export state for each finalist so product and engineering teams can review changes. The iframe loads but appears blank
Check browser third-party-cookie restrictions, frame-ancestor or Content-Security-Policy rules, and whether the vendor requires an allowlisted origin. Test the exact production domain, not only localhost.

Projects save for one user but not another
Verify tenant and user identifiers, token scope, callback handling and ownership rules. Hosted storage and an SDK-connected database can fail in different places, so log the request and response IDs on both sides.
Exports differ from the canvas
Check font availability, image URLs, color profiles, browser versus server rendering and the selected export settings. Reproduce with a minimal template before opening a vendor ticket.

Mobile support is unclear
Do not infer native support from a responsive web demo. Ask for the exact iOS, Android or desktop SDK, supported operating-system versions, licensing and offline behavior.
Screenshot captures include overlays
Use a wait condition for the editor, hide known selectors or custom CSS, and verify the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers. A failed or blank capture should not be treated as a valid visual test.
