There is no single pixel size or file format that works for every storefront hero. Choose image widths to match the banner’s actual CSS slot and likely screen density, then use responsive markup so the browser downloads an appropriate candidate. For photo-led banners, AVIF or WebP can reduce file size when your delivery setup supports them; use a different mobile crop when the desktop composition does not work at small widths.
What size should a storefront hero banner be?
Size the image for the space it occupies in your layout, not for a generic “hero banner” dimension. The relevant width is the rendered CSS width at each breakpoint; the source image also needs enough pixels for the device-pixel density you intend to support. The theme’s content width, hero height, crop, and focal point all affect the right asset.
For a full-width hero, Shopify’s responsive-image documentation illustrates candidates at 600, 900, 1200, and 1600 pixels, paired with sizes="100vw". Those are example candidate widths, not a universal upload-size recommendation. Shopify advises that four to six srcset widths are usually sufficient; adding many near-duplicate sizes is rarely necessary. See Shopify’s responsive-image guidance.
Let the browser choose among candidates
srcset lists available image files; sizes describes the image’s expected rendered width so the browser can choose a suitable file. Set sizes to match the actual CSS layout at each breakpoint. For a viewport-wide image, 100vw is Shopify’s documented example. If the hero sits inside a narrower container, describe that narrower slot instead of claiming it spans the viewport.

Shopify Developer calls sizes “the single most effective responsive performance lever in Shopify themes.” The key is accuracy: a value that overstates the slot can lead to unnecessarily large downloads, while one that understates it can result in a soft-looking image.
Should you use WebP or AVIF?
AVIF and WebP can compress images more efficiently than JPEG or PNG, but neither format guarantees a smaller file at the same perceived quality for every image. Results depend on the artwork and encoding settings. Compare the actual files visually and by byte size, especially around sharp edges, gradients, and any text embedded in the artwork. The available evidence does not establish one universally best format, quality setting, or byte target.

Use AVIF or WebP when your CDN or other delivery layer and your target browsers support them. Where you control format fallbacks in markup, a <picture> element can offer AVIF first, then WebP, with a JPEG fallback. A CDN may instead negotiate the format based on browser capability. Google’s guidance explains how to serve images in modern formats.

When should the mobile hero use a different image?
Use a separate mobile crop when shrinking the desktop image would put the subject in the wrong place, make it too small, or crowd the composition. A portrait or tighter crop can keep the focal subject prominent while preserving room for any live text beside or over the image.
Use <picture> with a media-conditioned mobile <source> and a desktop fallback <img>. The browser can select the matching crop before downloading it. Provide width and height for the mobile source as well as the fallback image so the browser can reserve the appropriate proportions for whichever asset it selects. Shopify’s responsive-image examples cover this art-direction pattern.

How should the hero load without hurting performance?
If the hero appears in the initial viewport and is the page’s likely Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) image, make it discoverable in the HTML and load it eagerly. Set high fetch priority where appropriate, and avoid using a CSS background-image for that LCP content. Include intrinsic width and height so the browser can reserve space and reduce layout shift. Google’s LCP guidance explains the performance considerations.
Do not lazy-load an image that is immediately visible at page load. Lazy loading is better suited to images that start outside the viewport. Shopify’s documentation notes that its auto sizes behavior applies to lazy-loaded images; eager images, including an LCP hero, need explicit sizes. Shopify’s theme performance guidance provides the platform-specific details.

A practical implementation checklist
- Inspect the theme CSS to identify the hero’s rendered width and crop at each breakpoint.
- Choose a small set of useful candidate widths for
srcset, based on those slots and likely display density. Shopify’s 600, 900, 1200, and 1600 pixel example is a starting reference for a full-width layout, not a required set. - Set
sizesto describe the real slot, such as100vwonly when the image genuinely spans the viewport. - Compare AVIF, WebP, or fallback encodes on the actual artwork; keep a fallback if your delivery setup requires one.
- Use a mobile-specific crop when the focal subject or text-safe area cannot be preserved with the desktop image.
- For an initially visible hero, use eager loading, appropriate fetch priority, and intrinsic dimensions; reserve lazy loading for content below the fold.
- On Shopify, prefer the official image filters where they meet the theme’s needs, then inspect the rendered markup and delivered formats.
