Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor file storage, the best iCloud alternative depends on what you already use: Google One fits Google Photos, Drive and Gmail; OneDrive suits Windows and Microsoft 365 users; Proton Drive is the privacy-led option; Dropbox offers a straightforward cross-platform file-sync choice; and pCloud is worth comparing for its file-recovery and photo-management features. None should be assumed to replace a complete iPhone backup, including app data and settings.
Which iCloud alternative fits your needs?
| Service | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Google One / Google Drive | People who already use Google services | Storage is shared across Google Photos, Drive and Gmail, and can be shared with up to five others. Google’s plan page lists current options. |
| Microsoft OneDrive | Windows users and Microsoft 365 households | Plans include storage-only and Microsoft 365 bundles; compare the bundle’s apps as well as its storage. Microsoft’s OneDrive page lists device support and plans. |
| Proton Drive | People prioritizing end-to-end encryption | Proton says its free plan includes end-to-end encryption. Check its current page for plan details and supported features. Proton Drive plans |
| Dropbox | People seeking a broad file-sync service | Its Plus plan lists 30 days to restore deleted files; displayed prices can vary by market and billing cycle. Dropbox plans |
| pCloud | People comparing photo management and recovery features | Its product page describes photo management, previous versions and up to 30 days of recovery; the reviewed page did not establish enough pricing detail to recommend a particular plan. pCloud plans and features |
These services can replace some iCloud Drive file-storage workflows. They are not established here as complete replacements for iCloud Photos, device backups, app data or Messages. Decide first whether you need a place for files alone or are trying to replace several Apple services at once.

Compare capacity and price in the same market
Plan allowances and prices below were displayed on providers’ pages accessed in 2026. They are snapshots, not guaranteed current rates. Google and Microsoft pages were viewed in US pricing contexts; Dropbox rendered a European euro view. Do not compare those displayed prices as if they were from the same market.
| Provider | Plan examples shown on provider page | Price and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google One | Up to 15 GB included with a Google account; 100 GB; 2 TB Google AI Plus | US page showed $1.99/month for 100 GB and $9.99/month for 2 TB Google AI Plus. |
| OneDrive / Microsoft 365 | 5 GB free; 100 GB with Microsoft 365 Basic; 1 TB with Microsoft 365 Personal | US page showed Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99/month or $99.99/year, including desktop Office apps. |
| Proton Drive | 5 GB free | Price examples not stated on the cited plan summary. |
| Dropbox | 2 GB Basic free; 2 TB Plus | The page view showed Plus at €9.99/month; market and billing cycle can affect displayed pricing. |
| pCloud | Specific comparable allowance not stated on the cited product page | Specific comparable price not stated on the cited product page. |

Choose by ecosystem and everyday workflow
Google One: shared storage across Google services
Google’s account storage is shared across Google Photos, Drive and Gmail, so a larger plan can serve more than file storage. Google says storage can be shared with up to five others. It is a natural fit if those services already hold your photos, documents and email; it is less compelling if you are trying to reduce dependence on Google’s ecosystem.
OneDrive: Windows and Microsoft 365 integration
Microsoft says OneDrive works across PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android. For a household already paying for Microsoft 365, the 1 TB Microsoft 365 Personal plan may be more useful to compare than a storage-only plan because it also includes desktop Office apps. Confirm whether the plan’s account and sharing arrangements fit your household before treating its capacity as shared storage.

Proton Drive: privacy-led storage across major platforms
Proton lists iOS and Android apps, Windows and macOS desktop apps, and web access, alongside document and spreadsheet editing. Those details make it a candidate for people who want encrypted storage, but the pricing page alone does not establish that its collaboration tools behave identically to Google or Microsoft.
Dropbox: compare sync and recovery needs
Dropbox is a general file-sync option, with a Plus plan listing 2 TB and 30 days to restore deleted files. Check its current plan page for the features, terms and price in your region rather than relying on a price seen for another market.

pCloud: examine the recovery and photo tools
pCloud’s product page describes photo management, browser and mobile editors, previous file versions, file recovery and up to 30 days of recovery. Those are reasons to compare it if recovery or managing photos matters; the cited page does not establish a specific plan recommendation.
Understand the privacy trade-off
End-to-end encryption is a meaningful distinction, but compare the service’s stated protection with the configuration you use today. Proton says end-to-end encryption is included in its free Drive plan. Apple says 15 iCloud data categories are end-to-end encrypted by default; enabling Advanced Data Protection raises that to 25, including iCloud Backup, Photos and Notes. Apple describes this as an opt-in feature, not the default state.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Apple says users who turn on Advanced Data Protection must update supported devices and set up a recovery contact or recovery key. Apple cannot recover the protected categories if the account is lost, so stronger privacy also puts more responsibility on the account holder. See Apple’s iCloud data security overview and Proton’s Drive plans for their respective descriptions.

Check recovery and backup before moving files
Storage capacity does not tell you how easily you can recover a deleted or changed file. Dropbox Plus lists 30 days to restore deleted files, and pCloud describes recovery and previous file versions, with up to 30 days of recovery. Apple documents Recently Deleted retention for specific iCloud Drive deletion workflows; that behavior should not be generalized to every kind of iCloud data. Review the exact recovery window and version-history terms for the service and plan you intend to use.
Best Value
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Most importantly, distinguish file syncing from device backup. The provider information cited here establishes file storage and selected recovery or backup-related features, but does not establish that these alternatives reproduce a complete iPhone backup with app state and settings. If that is what you need, do not cancel or disable iCloud backups on the assumption that moving files will preserve them. Apple’s support page explains its iCloud Drive file-management workflows and deletion behavior: iCloud storage support.
Plan a cautious move from iCloud Drive
The cited provider pages do not document a complete migration workflow, so exact transfer steps depend on your devices and the services you choose. Use this checklist rather than assuming a switch is automatic:
Quick Recap
- List what you actually store in iCloud Drive separately from Photos, device backups, app data and Messages.
- Choose the destination based on ecosystem, privacy model, capacity, sharing and recovery—not just the largest headline allowance.
- Check the destination’s current plan, platform support, sync behavior and recovery terms in your region.
- Keep an independent copy of important files until you have confirmed the transfer completed and the files open from the new service.
- Only change Apple services you have verified are no longer needed; a file transfer alone does not establish that other iCloud data has moved.
