For quick reference in a browser, ichingapp.org is an option; for manual entry of a physical cast or multiple translation choices, The Original I Ching App describes those features in its Google Play listing. The shortlist below compares what each source says its tool offers—these are not hands-on test results.
How to choose an I Ching app or online tool
Decide what you need the tool to do before comparing ratings or prices. A casting interface, a reference for all 64 hexagrams, translation study, and a consultation journal are different jobs; a tool that is strong at one may not cover the others.

- For a reading: check whether the tool casts automatically, lets you enter a physical cast, or explains its randomization method.
- For study: check the named translation, whether Chinese text is included, and whether judgment, image, and changing-line text are available.
- For ongoing practice: look for saved readings, notes, search, and export if you want to revisit earlier consultations.
- For access: confirm whether the tool runs on your device or in a browser, whether it works offline, and whether features require payment.
Translations are not interchangeable. Before interpreting a result, identify which translation and commentary the tool is showing; a choice of multiple translations can be useful for comparison, but does not make their wording equivalent.

| Tool | What its source describes | Best fit to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Yi Jing by Flat Earth Studio | A 2026 comparison describes translation purchases or comparison and a consultation journal, and reports iOS-only availability. App Store user commentary mentions changing translations while viewing a hexagram and journal export. | iOS users looking for translation comparison and record keeping. Check the current listing for supported features and purchase details. |
| I-Ching: Book of Changes by Bondia Tecnologia | Its Google Play listing describes English and Portuguese translations, hexagram and trigram reference, changing-line details, saved notes, search, offline functionality, and rod-based randomness. | Android users wanting a reference and saved notes alongside readings. These are listing claims, not independent verification. |
| I Ching: Book of Changes by codeserk | A 2026 comparison describes it as a free Android reference option. Current rating, languages, and purchase details need confirmation in the live store. | Android users seeking a reference-first option, after checking the current listing. |
| ichingapp.org | The site describes English interpretations for all 64 hexagrams and 386 lines, Chinese text, and Wilhelm commentary. | Readers who want a browser-based reference or reading without installing an app. Review the site’s content and privacy terms before use. |
| The Original I Ching App | Its Google Play listing describes automatic casting, manual entry after a coin or stalk cast, and multiple translation choices. | Readers who want to enter a physical cast or compare the available translation choices. These descriptions are vendor claims. |
A publisher comparison that includes Yi Jing was published by Daoa, so its descriptions of that app should be read as publisher claims, not independent evaluation: Daoa’s I Ching app comparison. App Store commentary is also user commentary, not a feature guarantee.
#1 Best Overall
Which I Ching app is best for study?
For study, prioritize the text rather than the casting interface. Confirm the translation by name, whether the tool includes the Chinese text, and whether its entries provide the judgment, image, and changing lines you need. The ichingapp.org site describes Chinese text and Wilhelm commentary alongside interpretations for all 64 hexagrams and 386 lines; The Original I Ching App’s Google Play listing describes multiple translation choices. Check the actual presentation in the tool before relying on it for close comparison.
If you want to follow how a consultation changes through its lines and revisit it later, look for line details plus saved readings, notes, or journal export. The available descriptions mention changing-line information and notes for Bondia’s app, and a journal and export commentary for Yi Jing; verify current availability and exact behavior in their listings.

What is the best free I Ching app?
There is no established universal winner on the available evidence. The 2026 Daoa comparison calls codeserk’s Android reference app free, but its current price, rating, language, and purchase details should be checked in Google Play. A browser tool such as ichingapp.org avoids installing an app, but the fact that it is browser-based does not establish that every feature is free or that its privacy practices suit you.

Can you get an I Ching reading online without an app?
Yes. ichingapp.org describes itself as a browser-based option with English interpretations for all 64 hexagrams and 386 lines, Chinese text, and Wilhelm commentary. That makes it a potential route to reference and readings without an installation. Review the site’s own terms and privacy information before entering anything you consider sensitive; the available description does not establish its data practices.

Digital casting, physical casting, and randomness
Tools differ in how they produce a cast. Some describe automatic generation; others let you manually enter the outcome of coins or stalks you cast yourself. Bondia’s Google Play listing describes a rod-based random method, while The Original I Ching App listing describes both automatic casting and manual entry after casting coins or stalks. The Daoa comparison also refers to a yarrow-stalk algorithm. These are source descriptions, not independently tested assessments of randomness or of equivalence to a physical procedure.
If you already cast with coins or stalks, manual entry can let you use the app for text and record keeping without asking it to generate the result. If you prefer a physical yarrow-stalk method, you do not need an app to cast; conversely, the existence of an app does not require a physical set.

Check current availability, cost, and privacy
Platforms, prices, ratings, in-app purchases, and feature availability can change and may vary by region. The Daoa comparison collected displayed prices and ratings on July 22, 2026; those are a dated storefront snapshot, not a current quote or a measure of quality. Confirm details in the live official store or product site before choosing. Privacy policies and platform support were not consistently established for the shortlist, so check each app’s current store listing and privacy policy, and the browser tool’s privacy terms.
