If you want horror atmosphere with frequent, hands-on combat, Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake) is the clearest fit here—but it is still survival horror, with dangerous encounters and resource management. Dead Space (2023 remake) also delivers a strong combat identity, though it leans into survival tension. If combat matters more than horror, DOOM Eternal is the action-first, horror-adjacent choice.
How these games balance action and survival
“More action than survival” does not necessarily mean that a game removes scarcity, danger or vulnerability. The useful distinction is how much agency you have during encounters: whether you can actively fight, switch tactics and respond to enemies, rather than relying mainly on evasion or endurance. These picks cover different points on that spectrum; the official descriptions do not provide a shared scale, so they are not ranked by numerical scores.

Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake): the closest match
Capcom’s remake of the 2005 game arrived on March 24, 2023. The US PlayStation listing categorizes it as Horror, Adventure and Action and says newcomers can enjoy it without prior series knowledge. Its mix is exactly why it suits players seeking active combat without abandoning horror: PlayStation describes horror sequences balanced by action, rather than a shift away from survival horror altogether. PlayStation’s Resident Evil 4 listing and Capcom’s remake announcement identify the game and its framing.

What makes combat feel active
You can shoot, use close combat, switch weapons quickly and use the knife for stealth kills, last-second escapes or parries. PlayStation also describes crafting ammunition and an auto-sort inventory feature. These tools give you choices during a fight and make inventory handling easier; they do not mean ammunition and other supplies cease to matter.

Who should choose it
Pick Resident Evil 4 if you want a horror game where fighting back is a regular, consequential part of play, and you are comfortable with danger and resource decisions. It is not the pick for someone who wants action with no survival pressure at all.
Dead Space (2023 remake): combat within survival horror
EA released its Dead Space remake on January 27, 2023, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It follows engineer Isaac Clarke aboard the mining ship USG Ishimura as he faces Necromorphs. EA explicitly calls it a remake of a survival-horror classic and describes Isaac as trapped and fighting for survival. EA’s Dead Space page gives the remake’s premise and platform information.

However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
That framing makes it a qualified recommendation for action-preferring players: there is a clear combat identity, but the atmosphere and survival struggle are not incidental. Choose it if you want science-fiction horror and active encounters while still welcoming tension and vulnerability. If the word “survival” describes what you most want to avoid, it is a less direct fit than Resident Evil 4.

EA’s page for the original 2008 Dead Space calls that game an “Action Horror Shooter”; that label applies to the original, not automatically to the 2023 remake. The remake’s own official framing is survival horror. Producer Phillippe Ducharme said the remake’s goal was “honoring the legacy of the original, while enhancing it with the power of today’s hardware.” That statement describes the production goal, not an independent verdict on the result.

DOOM Eternal: choose it when action matters most
DOOM Eternal is the conditional pick for someone who mainly wants intense first-person combat against demons. PlayStation describes its fast “push-forward” approach in terms of speed and power, alongside demon combat, Horde Mode and multiplayer. The PlayStation listing for DOOM Eternal supports that action-first characterization.
It belongs in a horror-adjacent slot, not as a close substitute for survival horror. Choose it when combat is the priority and you are happy for the horror element to be less central than in Resident Evil 4 or Dead Space.

- Choose DOOM Eternal when you want fast demon-fighting action first and horror second.
