What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Assumption: “the Harry Potter RPG” refers to Hogwarts Legacy. On PC, the most reliable route to smooth performance is to run the game’s built-in benchmark, start with its recommended preset, then tune resolution, upscaling and frame-rate limits for your display. On PS5, choose a display mode according to whether stable frame rate or maximum image quality matters more. There is no single best slider configuration for every computer because the game can load the GPU, CPU and VRAM differently depending on the setting and scene.
The fastest way to get a smooth PC baseline
Start with the game’s own measurement rather than copying a preset from another computer. The benchmark evaluates your hardware and saves a suggested global quality preset.

- Open Settings, choose Graphics Options, and scroll near the bottom of the menu.
- Select Run Benchmark and let the analysis finish.
- Apply the recommended global quality preset.
- Load the same save and location you normally play, then change only one or two controls at a time.
- Play long enough to encounter a demanding area before deciding whether the change helped. A setting that looks smooth in an empty corridor may behave differently outdoors or around dense activity.
The benchmark is a starting point, not a promise of a fixed frame rate. The official PC FAQ says that quality adjustments can affect “GPU and CPU performance, or VRAM.” Your goal is consistent delivery on your monitor, not the highest preset shown in the menu.

Set resolution and upscaling before chasing individual sliders
Choose the output resolution first
Use the monitor’s native resolution when your hardware can maintain the frame-rate target. If it cannot, reducing rendering resolution is usually a more predictable first step than lowering every quality option. The game exposes separate controls for display resolution and rendering resolution, so the image sent to the monitor does not have to be produced at the same internal resolution.

Decide your target before changing anything:
- 1080p: a practical target for the official high-quality reference configuration.
- 1440p: the official ultra reference target for a sufficiently powerful system.
- 2160p (4K): the official ultra 4K reference target, requiring substantially more graphics hardware.
Test an upscaler only when native rendering misses the target
Hogwarts Legacy supports NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS on devices where those options are available. An upscaler renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output, which can raise frame rate while reducing image quality. Performance-oriented modes make the larger image-quality trade-off; quality-oriented modes preserve more detail but provide less performance headroom.
- Keep the same resolution, scene and frame-rate cap while testing.
- Compare native rendering with the available DLSS, FSR or XeSS modes.
- Inspect fine geometry, foliage, distant objects and moving characters for softness or shimmering.
- Keep the clearest mode that maintains your chosen cap. Do not assume a particular percentage gain: the result depends on your GPU, CPU, resolution and scene.
The PC FAQ also documents NVIDIA DLSS frame generation. Treat it as a separate option from ordinary upscaling: evaluate the displayed smoothness and image artifacts on your own system rather than assuming it solves a frame-time problem.
Use a frame-rate cap and VSync deliberately
A stable cap is often preferable to an uncapped number that repeatedly rises and falls. The official FAQ notes that a lower frame-rate cap may reduce stuttering. Set the cap to a rate your hardware can sustain in demanding areas, then keep it consistent.

- For a high-refresh or variable-refresh display, select a cap supported by both the monitor and the hardware rather than copying a universal 60 fps value.
- VSync is enabled by default and limits the GPU to no more than the monitor’s refresh rate. Leave it on while establishing a baseline, then change it only when you understand how your display handles synchronization.
Judge smoothness by consistency. A lower, steady cap is generally easier to play than a higher cap with frequent drops, and the game’s own guidance specifically connects a lower cap with reduced stuttering.

Leave ray tracing off while troubleshooting
Ray tracing is disabled by default and has separate controls for reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion. It affects both GPU and CPU performance, and changing the ray-tracing setting requires a restart.
- Turn ray tracing off before diagnosing ordinary stutter or low frame rates.
- Restart the game if you changed the ray-tracing setting.
- Establish a stable resolution, upscaling mode and frame cap first.
- Only then test ray-traced reflections, shadows or ambient occlusion one at a time.
Ray tracing can improve specific lighting and reflection effects, but its visual value is machine- and scene-dependent. If enabling it breaks your cap, disable it rather than compensating by lowering every other setting.
What each PC quality setting changes
The official FAQ describes the visual role of each control but does not publish a universal performance cost ranking. Lower the setting that addresses the visual feature you are willing to trade, and verify the result on your hardware.

Because the source guidance does not assign a fixed cost to each option, avoid claims such as “this is always the most expensive setting.” The bottleneck can move between GPU, CPU and VRAM depending on your configuration.

Official PC hardware targets and what they mean
Warner Bros. Games publishes four example configurations. They are reference targets, not independent benchmark results and not a guarantee that every scene will hold the listed rate.
| Tier | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Storage | Published target |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum / Low | Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400 | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4 GB or AMD Radeon RX 470 4 GB | 85 GB HDD | 720p, 30 fps, Low quality |
| Recommended / High | Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or Intel Arc A770 | 85 GB SSD | 1080p, 60 fps, High quality |
| Ultra | Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | 32 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT | 85 GB SSD | 1440p, 60 fps, Ultra quality |
| Ultra 4K | Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | 32 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT | 85 GB SSD | 2160p, 60 fps, Ultra quality |
The specifications page lists an HDD as supported for the minimum/low tier, while the recommended and higher tiers use an SSD. The support FAQ recommends at least 16 GB of memory and says an SSD is preferred. That preference does not prove that replacing a drive will cure a graphics bottleneck; match the upgrade to the component limiting your chosen resolution and cap.
Practical starting profiles by goal
Use these as decision frameworks, then let the benchmark and your own test location decide the final values.
| Your priority | Start here | Trade-off to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Stable play on an entry-level PC | Run the benchmark, select its recommended preset, target 720p or another resolution your display accepts, keep ray tracing off and use a conservative cap. | Lower image resolution and fewer effects are preferable to repeated frame-time spikes. |
| 1080p with balanced quality | Use the benchmark preset around the official High target, test native rendering first, then try an upscaler if the cap is missed. | Upscaling can soften fine detail; compare it in the same scene. |
| 1440p enthusiast quality | Start from the Ultra reference class, disable ray tracing while establishing the baseline, and add it only after the cap is stable. | Ray tracing adds GPU and CPU work and requires a restart when toggled. |
| 4K output | Use the Ultra 4K reference class as a hardware guide, then test rendering resolution and an available upscaler before reducing broad quality settings. | Native 2160p is demanding; image-quality trade-offs become more visible, so inspect distant detail and foliage. |
Diagnose stutter without changing everything at once
If the frame rate is low everywhere
Lower rendering resolution or use a performance-oriented upscaling mode, then retest with the same cap. If that does not provide a usable result, reduce the global preset through the benchmark recommendation and adjust the settings that matter least to you visually.

If only busy areas dip
Test Population Quality, View Distance Quality and Foliage Quality because they govern non-essential characters, distant detail and outdoor complexity. Change one control at a time; the FAQ does not establish a universal ranking, so your CPU/GPU balance matters.
If textures look unstable or overly soft
Check Texture Quality and the selected upscaler before lowering unrelated effects. Texture resolution is tied to VRAM usage, while an aggressive performance mode trades image quality for frame rate. Choose the clearest mode that your memory and cap can sustain.
If stutter appears after enabling ray tracing
Disable ray tracing, restart, and confirm the baseline cap. If performance is smooth again, the ray-traced feature—not necessarily the entire preset—is the relevant trade-off.
If changes seem to do nothing
Confirm that the setting was saved, that you tested the same location, and that the display cap or VSync is not masking a higher rate. The benchmark recommendation can be reapplied, after which you can make a single controlled change.

PS5 graphics modes
Console players do not use the PC’s individual quality sliders. On PS5, open Display Options and choose a mode based on the output device and priority:
| Mode | Priority | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Higher frame rate | Use when responsiveness and consistency matter most. |
| Fidelity | Resolution and graphics quality | Use when image detail matters more than maximum frame rate. |
| Fidelity with ray tracing | Higher-fidelity presentation with ray tracing | Requires a reboot after selection. |
| Balanced | A mix of frame rate and image quality | Available only with a supported output device. |
| HFR Performance | Maximum frame rate | Available only with a supported output device. |
Balanced and HFR Performance are not guaranteed on every television or monitor; the display must support the required output characteristics. Choose Performance when smooth motion is your first concern, Fidelity when resolution is the priority, and test the other modes only if your display supports them.
A support update dated November 4, 2024 describes visual and performance improvements for PS5 Pro across its modes. Those notes apply to PS5 Pro and should not be generalized to the base PS5 or other platforms.

Should you upgrade hardware?
Use the benchmark and the official target table before buying anything. A graphics-card upgrade is relevant when your chosen resolution and quality target exceed the current GPU’s capability, but it is not a universal solution: a CPU, memory or VRAM limit can remain after a GPU change.
- Compare your processor, GPU, RAM and storage with the reference tier closest to your target.
- Decide whether you want 1080p, 1440p or 2160p output and a sustainable cap before selecting replacement hardware.
- Check power supply, case clearance, motherboard compatibility and display connectors for any proposed graphics card.
- Do not buy an SSD solely to fix graphics quality; the official information says an SSD is preferred for higher tiers but does not establish it as a cure for every performance problem.
If your system is below the minimum reference configuration, begin with the benchmark’s low recommendation and a lower rendering resolution. If it is near the High, Ultra or Ultra 4K reference tier, use that tier as a starting expectation and still validate demanding areas in your own game.
A repeatable settings checklist
- Run Graphics Options → Run Benchmark and apply its recommendation.
- Choose the target output resolution and a frame-rate cap your display and hardware can sustain.
- Keep VSync on while establishing the baseline; remember it limits output to the monitor’s refresh rate.
- Test native rendering, then DLSS, FSR or XeSS if native performance misses the target.
- Leave ray tracing off until ordinary performance is stable; restart after changing it.
- Adjust one or two visual settings at a time, selecting the control whose visual effect you are willing to sacrifice.
- Retest in the same demanding location after every meaningful change.
For most players, the best balance is the benchmark-recommended preset with a sensible cap, an upscaler only when needed, and ray tracing disabled unless the system can maintain the desired consistency. That approach preserves as much image quality as your particular hardware can actually deliver instead of forcing a preset designed for someone else’s PC.
