The safest way to buy an OpenWrt router is to verify the exact model and hardware revision in OpenWrt’s current Table of Hardware before ordering. Then check its installation instructions, usable flash and RAM, supported wireless hardware, ports and recovery options. A Wi-Fi generation or familiar brand name alone does not establish OpenWrt compatibility.
1. Confirm the exact model and hardware revision
Start with the product’s full model name and hardware revision—not just the product family or the name used in a store listing. Search for that exact variant in OpenWrt’s Table of Hardware and confirm that it is supported by the current release. Similar-looking revisions can differ in hardware, firmware requirements or support status.

Open the device’s entry and read its installation instructions before you buy. Check which factory image applies, whether the normal upgrade path is available, and whether the page lists unsupported functions or a nonstandard installation sequence. OpenWrt’s hardware pages are support references, not a promise that every feature advertised by a manufacturer will work under OpenWrt.

2. Check flash and RAM—and leave headroom
OpenWrt’s supported-device guidance lists 8 MB of flash and 64 MB of RAM as minimums, while identifying 16 MB of flash and 128 MB of RAM as better levels. These are project recommendations, not performance benchmarks or guarantees that a particular package set will fit. The project warns: “DO NOT BUY DEVICES WITH 8MB FLASH / 64MB RAM if you intend to flash an up-to-date and secure OpenWrt version onto it!”

Do not assume all advertised flash is available for packages. OpenWrt notes that package-usable space can be significantly lower than total flash, including on devices with dual firmware. Check the device entry for storage details, especially if you expect to install additional packages.
3. Treat Wi-Fi generation as a shortlist filter, not proof of support
If Wi-Fi 6 is important, OpenWrt’s view for supported 802.11ax routers can help identify candidates. It is only a starting point: confirm the exact device entry, wireless bands and supported functions. A Wi-Fi 6 label does not by itself confirm that the router’s radios have suitable OpenWrt driver support.

OpenWrt flags limited supportability for Broadcom Wi-Fi chipsets because free and open-source driver availability is limited. Its Wi-Fi 6 view also warns that some devices require a complex or nonstandard installation procedure. These are reasons to check the specific device, not evidence that every Broadcom-based router or every device with an unusual install path will fail.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor some USB 3.0 storage configurations, the hardware view also flags possible 2.4 GHz problems. If you plan to use both, check device-specific notes rather than assuming the issue applies universally.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
4. Match the wired ports and extras to your network
Count the Ethernet ports and verify their speeds against the internet connection, wired devices and any planned switch. Consider additional features only if they serve a real requirement:
- USB: Check support and device notes if you intend to attach storage or another USB device.
- PoE: Useful when your installation needs power over Ethernet; verify the specific device’s capabilities and requirements.
- SFP: Relevant if your network design calls for an SFP connection.
- LTE: Check support if cellular connectivity is part of your plan.
OpenWrt’s hardware views include filters and fields for Ethernet rates and counts, wireless bands, USB, PoE, SFP and LTE. These are comparison aids, not requirements for every home router.

- Design-Conscious AX3000: Clean white finish with compact vertical form factor blends into modern living spaces — no more hiding the router in a closet where Wi-Fi performance suffers
- OpenWRT Without Compromise: Full OpenWRT firmware compatibility for advanced users who demand customization — VLANs, custom firewall rules, traffic shaping, and community packages — without sacrificing design
- Five Gigabit Ports in Style: Full wired connectivity for entertainment centers without compromising aesthetics; 1.3 GHz dual-core CPU powers all five ports at gigabit speed for gaming, streaming, and NAS
- Tri-Antenna 160 MHz Coverage: Three internal beamforming antennas with 160 MHz channel support deliver extended range and doubled throughput for Wi-Fi 6 devices, plus OpenWRT-Ready firmware for custom packages and enterprise control

5. Check installation and recovery risk
Before choosing between supported devices, look for the installation prerequisites and any documented rescue or recovery function on each device page. OpenWrt notes that some routers have firmware rescue functionality and others do not. A clear installation path and documented recovery option can matter if you are new to flashing router firmware; a complicated procedure may make an otherwise suitable candidate a poor fit for your comfort level.
Compare candidates with the same checklist
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Model and revision | Exact entry and current-release support in OpenWrt’s Table of Hardware | A similar product name does not establish support for the revision being sold. |
| Installation | Applicable factory image, required sequence and device-specific warnings | Some devices have nonstandard or more complex installation procedures. |
| Flash and RAM | Capacity, plus any device-specific notes about usable storage | More headroom is preferable; total flash can overstate package-usable space. |
| Wireless | Supported bands and functions, and the radio chipset’s support status | Wi-Fi generation alone does not establish driver support. |
| Ports and extras | Ethernet count and speed, plus any required USB, PoE, SFP or LTE feature | Ensures the hardware suits the actual WAN and LAN design. |
| Recovery | Whether the device documentation describes rescue or recovery | Helps you assess the consequences of an installation problem. |
What the support tables cannot tell you
OpenWrt’s official hardware references establish support information and device attributes; they do not provide a universal speed ranking or head-to-head throughput results. They cannot determine which supported router will have the best Wi-Fi range, routing throughput or VPN performance in your home. Those comparisons require model-specific testing with a stated setup, so do not infer a fastest or best-performing model from compatibility listings alone.
