For a long video, start with a HandBrake Creator or web preset, then use Constant Quality if you care more about the picture than a precise file size. Test a representative section before encoding the full video: there is no single RF value that suits every source. Most importantly, HandBrake compresses the saved file; it does not set the bitrate or keyframes for the separate encoder that sends your live stream to YouTube.
Choose settings based on the result you need
There are two different goals when compressing a long video: keeping a good-looking picture while allowing the file size to vary, or aiming for a particular average bitrate or size. HandBrake’s documentation recommends Constant Quality unless a target filesize is necessary. It describes Constant Quality as a way to vary bitrate according to the content to meet a quality setting. Average Bitrate instead targets a selected average rate; HandBrake recommends multipass for this mode and says it can take up to twice as long. Neither mode guarantees a particular final size for an unspecified source.

Use Constant Quality for a quality-first encode
Choose Constant Quality when the priority is acceptable visual quality rather than hitting a specific file size. There is no universally correct RF number for an unknown video: detail, motion, source quality, resolution, and your own quality threshold all matter. Encode and inspect a short sample before settling on a setting for the full runtime. See HandBrake’s quality guidance and its Constant Quality vs Average Bit Rate explanation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse Average Bitrate when a target matters
Choose Average Bitrate when you have a bitrate or approximate size target to work toward. The result still depends on the content and encoding choices. HandBrake recommends multipass for Average Bitrate, with the trade-off that encoding can take up to twice as long. Do not mistake this saved-file bitrate for YouTube’s live ingest bitrate.

Set up the HandBrake encode
- Open the source and select a web or Creator preset. HandBrake’s Creator presets are intended for hosting services such as YouTube. Fast 1080p30 is described as a fast, broadly compatible starting point, but it should not override the source’s actual resolution and frame rate. After choosing a preset, inspect what it changed. See HandBrake’s official presets.
- Open the Video tab and choose Constant Quality or Average Bitrate. Use Constant Quality for a quality-first file; use Average Bitrate if you need to target an average rate or approximate size. If using Average Bitrate, consider multipass and allow for the longer encode.
- Begin with the encoder’s default or a neutral speed preset. The encoder preset affects speed, quality, and filesize behavior. A slower preset may make sense when the encode is offline and you can wait, but there is no best speed setting for every source or computer. Change it only after a test shows that the trade-off suits your needs. See HandBrake’s video encoder preset documentation.
- Preserve the source frame rate unless you have a reason to convert it. If the source is variable frame rate and you need constant frame rate output, select the constant-rate option intentionally. HandBrake’s frame-rate documentation is marked draft, so check the labels in your installed version. See HandBrake’s frame-rate guidance.
- Preview a representative short section. Include detailed scenes and motion, then inspect the output and its size. Use that result to decide whether to change quality or resolution before encoding the entire video. No one RF setting can promise a specific file size or quality for every source.
- Lower resolution only if the loss of detail is acceptable. A smaller frame can reduce file size and processing needs, but it removes detail. Compare a sample at the original and lower resolution before committing to a long encode. See HandBrake’s performance guidance.
Keep file compression separate from YouTube live settings
A compressed HandBrake file is the media you play. A live encoder—such as streaming software—sends that media to YouTube and controls the live stream’s ingest settings. HandBrake Constant Quality is not YouTube’s live bitrate setting. For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and a bitrate chosen for the live stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate.
YouTube’s H.264 live-ingest figures
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, checked 2026-10-03, lists these H.264 bitrate recommendations and minimums. They apply to the live ingest stream, not to a HandBrake file encode.

YouTube publishes different bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Choose the table for the codec you actually send, and match the live bitrate to the selected stream resolution and frame rate as well as the connection’s reliable upload capacity. For the full current values and other ingest requirements, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Other live-stream requirements to check
- YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 fps.
- Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube’s maximum interval is 4 seconds.
- YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo, and 128 kbps stereo audio.
- Use progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR.
- Test the actual stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming the file encode proves the live feed is configured correctly.
Troubleshoot the most common choices
- The file is larger than expected: Constant Quality varies bitrate with content and does not target a fixed size. Test a different quality setting, consider Average Bitrate if a target is important, or reduce resolution only if you accept the loss of detail.
- The picture looks soft or blocky: Inspect the source and the test encode at the same scenes. A lower output resolution sacrifices detail; a quality setting that is too aggressive for the material can also make the result unacceptable. Re-encode a representative sample with a less aggressive choice before processing the full runtime.
- The encode is taking too long: Encoder speed presets trade speed against compression behavior. Start at the default or neutral preset; test a faster option if turnaround time matters more than the resulting file efficiency.
- The frame rate changes unexpectedly: Check the selected preset and Video tab. Preserve the source rate unless there is a reason to convert it; if converting variable-rate footage to constant frame rate, select that output rate intentionally.
- YouTube reports a live-stream problem despite a good file: Check the separate live encoder: codec, CBR, bitrate for live resolution and frame rate, 2-second keyframes, audio, and stream health. A HandBrake RF or Average Bitrate setting does not configure these ingest values.
Or let it run in the cloud
HandBrake prepares a file; keeping a YouTube loop live from your own setup still means the computer and connection have to remain available. StreamNeo is a cloud service for playing uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card.
