For most PC newcomers, Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) is the best place to start: it brings six classic games together, supports co-op and multiplayer, and provides an official route to community mods. Choose Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary first to follow release order. If you mainly want free-to-play multiplayer and player-made Forge content, start with Halo Infinite. ElDewrito is a separate, unofficial community project—not a standard retail Halo release.
Which Halo game or project is right for you?
| Option | Best fit | What is established | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halo: The Master Chief Collection | Classic campaigns, multiplayer, co-op, and official mod tools | Six games, 67 campaign missions, more than 120 multiplayer maps, Windows availability, and Steam Workshop support, according to Halo Waypoint. | Campaign co-op with friends on PC is available over Xbox network, but campaign cross-play between PC and console is not supported, according to Halo Support. Workshop mods require launching MCC with anti-cheat disabled on Steam. |
| Halo Infinite | Free-to-play multiplayer and Forge-made maps and modes | Xbox Wire’s 2021 PC overview describes PC support, free multiplayer, Forge tools, custom games, Firefight, and cross-platform play: Halo Infinite on PC. | That overview is dated 2021, not a current report on playlists, service status, updates, or player numbers. |
| ElDewrito | Exploring a fan-led Halo Online multiplayer project and community Forge | The project guide describes a free community mod with player-hosted servers and mod synchronization: ElDewrito guide. | It is unofficial; Halo Online was tested in 2015 but never fully released. Current project activity and distribution status are not established here. |
| MCC Steam Workshop | Trying community-made campaigns, maps, weapons, and gameplay changes | The live Workshop has campaign, multiplayer, and Firefight categories: MCC Workshop. | Compatibility and setup vary by mod. Read its creator’s instructions; Halo Support says it does not troubleshoot mods. |
Why MCC is the strongest all-round starting point
MCC gathers six games from the original Master Chief saga in one Windows collection. Halo Waypoint lists 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps. Those counts describe the collection’s breadth; they are not a ranking of game quality or a guarantee about current matchmaking activity.

Halo Support recommends starting with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, while noting that players can choose whichever game they prefer. Following the release order in its Quick Start Guide gives this sequence:
- Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
- Halo 2 Anniversary
- Halo 3
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo: Reach
- Halo 4
If story continuity matters more to you than release order, the support guide does not require this sequence; its recommendation is a starting point, not a restriction. MCC also supports modding each game, making it a useful choice for players who want the original campaigns alongside community alterations.

How to install MCC Steam Workshop mods
Steam Workshop is the simplest official route documented for MCC mods, but individual projects can have extra requirements. Halo Support’s instructions are to browse the Workshop, subscribe, then start the anti-cheat-disabled version of MCC.
- Open the MCC Steam Workshop and browse the relevant category.
- Open a mod’s listing. Check which game and mode it supports, plus the creator’s installation notes and any prerequisites.
- Select Subscribe on the Workshop listing and allow Steam to download the mod.
- In Steam, launch Halo MCC Anti-Cheat Disabled, not the regular anti-cheat-enabled option. Halo Support warns that mods will not work unless Easy Anti-Cheat is disabled.
- Follow any additional launch or setup steps supplied by the mod creator.
Workshop listings are a changing catalog, not a fixed recommendation list. Projects visible there have included The Mona Lisa, Project Chozo Beta, and Civil Unrest: Firefight; check each live listing for current compatibility and instructions. Halo Support’s Steam Workshop mod guide covers the official process, but says Halo Support does not troubleshoot mod-specific problems.

When Halo Infinite makes more sense
Pick Halo Infinite if your priority is multiplayer without first buying into MCC’s classic collection, or if you want to play custom experiences made with Forge. Xbox Wire’s PC overview documents free-to-play multiplayer, Forge creation tools, custom games, Firefight, and cross-platform play. It also reported over 70 maps in matchmaking in 2021; that is a dated figure from the article, not a current map count.

What to know before trying ElDewrito
ElDewrito is a community modification for Halo Online, not an official, fully released Halo game. Halo Online itself was tested in 2015 and never fully released. ElDewrito’s guide describes features including player-hosted servers and expanded Forge, with mod synchronization. Microsoft asked the team to temporarily halt development in 2018, a historical point recorded in the project guide.
That background makes ElDewrito an option for readers specifically interested in a fan-led project, not the most reliable default recommendation for someone seeking an officially supported PC Halo game. Current activity and distribution status have not been established, so do not assume servers are populated or installation is straightforward; consult the project’s own guide for its current instructions.

Choosing without relying on population claims
There is no comparable current population data here for MCC, Infinite, or ElDewrito, so it would be misleading to declare one the busiest or easiest to matchmake in. Match the choice to what you want to play: MCC for the classic campaigns and their official mod route, Infinite for free multiplayer and Forge-created content, or ElDewrito for an unofficial community project. For MCC co-op, PC campaign play with friends is supported over Xbox network; campaign cross-play between PC and console is not.
