There is no universal “best” graphics preset for survival horror: the right settings depend on the game, your hardware, and the resolution and frame rate you want. For smoother play, set a realistic target, confirm your system meets the game’s requirements, use an upscaler supported by that game and platform, and reduce costly optional effects—especially ray tracing or path tracing—before lowering every visual setting.
How to tune settings for smoother gameplay
- Choose a resolution and frame-rate goal. Decide what output resolution you want and aim for a frame rate your system can sustain. A stable, lower target may feel better than a higher rate that fluctuates, but no single target suits every player or game.
- Check the exact game’s requirements. Compare your processor, graphics card, memory, and storage with the game’s current minimum and recommended requirements. Requirements can give a more useful starting point than a generic “high FPS” preset.
- Try the game’s supported upscaler. Upscaling can help balance output resolution and performance, but its quality and availability vary by title, GPU, and console. Select a supported mode, then judge the result in motion as well as in still scenes.
- Reduce the most demanding optional effects first. If the game offers ray tracing or path tracing, lower or disable it and compare performance. Then adjust other graphics controls individually so you can see which changes matter on your system.
- Check frame pacing and image quality again. Replay the same demanding section after each change. Keep the combination that feels consistent and remains visually acceptable; do not assume a displayed frame-rate increase means equally responsive native rendering when frame generation is enabled.
What the settings trade off
Resolution and upscaling
Higher output resolutions demand more rendering work. A supported upscaler can render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct the output, but the result depends on the implementation and mode in that specific game. For example, Steam describes Silent Hill 2’s recommended PC tier as targeting 4K using DLSS or a similar technology; that is a game-specific platform requirement, not a guarantee that every GPU can run 4K smoothly.

Ray tracing and path tracing
These optional effects can substantially increase rendering demands. Alan Wake 2 illustrates how much the choice can vary: NVIDIA describes its Low ray-tracing preset as using no path tracing, Medium as partial path tracing, and High as full path tracing. Those are Alan Wake 2 presets, not settings to copy into other horror games.

Frame generation
Frame generation can add displayed frames, but a higher displayed rate is not the same thing as a universal guarantee of lower input latency or better responsiveness. Consider it only where the game and hardware support it, and evaluate how play feels rather than relying on the number alone.

Alan Wake 2 on PC
NVIDIA’s Alan Wake 2 guide describes the game’s path-traced visuals and defines the ray-tracing presets: Low has no path tracing; Medium uses partial path tracing, with one bounce and ray-traced ambient occlusion on the final hit; High uses full path tracing, with three bounces and ray-traced ambient occlusion on the final hit. NVIDIA recommends DLSS Ray Reconstruction for performance with ray tracing enabled, saying it replaces two denoisers and ran up to 14% faster in NVIDIA’s benchmarks. That speed claim is NVIDIA’s benchmark result, not an independent test or a promise for every system.
NVIDIA’s guide also says DLSS Super Resolution supports RTX GPUs and Frame Generation supports RTX 40 Series GPUs. In its pre-release-build measurements, NVIDIA reported that activating Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and Super Resolution with full ray tracing and maximum settings multiplied 4K frame rates by 4.1× on an RTX 4090 and 4.7× on an RTX 4080 or RTX 4070 Ti. NVIDIA reported an average 3× multiplier at 1440p and 2.7× at 1080p for RTX 40 Series cards. These are historical vendor-reported results from a pre-release build, not predictions for the current release or comparable results across GPUs. NVIDIA’s Alan Wake 2 guide.

Silent Hill 2 on PC
KONAMI’s Steam listing gives a useful example of requirements tied to performance targets. Its minimum tier lists a GTX 1070 Ti, Radeon RX 5700, or Intel Arc A750, 16 GB RAM, and 50 GB of available storage; Steam says this tier targets stable 30 FPS at 1080p on Low or Medium. The recommended tier lists an RTX 2080 or RX 6800 XT and 16 GB RAM; Steam says it targets 60 FPS on Medium or 30 FPS on High at Full HD, or 4K using DLSS or similar. Steam recommends an SSD. The listing is a publisher/platform specification, not an independent benchmark, and the SSD recommendation is not evidence of higher frame rates. On consoles, use the graphics or performance options the game provides rather than looking for PC-style individual sliders. Sony said in March 2026 that upgraded PSSR support includes SILENT HILL 2 and SILENT HILL f on PS5 Pro. Check the PC before lowering image quality
If performance is unexpectedly poor, address basic system issues before sacrificing detail. Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 support guidance recommends checking the game’s minimum requirements, updating graphics drivers and Windows, checking graphics-driver and computer power settings, updating DirectX, and verifying game files through Steam. For laptops with switchable graphics, Capcom also advises confirming the game uses the dedicated high-performance GPU, connecting the charger, and checking the power plan. These are Capcom’s troubleshooting recommendations for Resident Evil 2; other games may have different guidance. Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 performance guidance.

Consider an upgrade only after comparing your current system with the exact game’s requirements and trying supported settings and troubleshooting steps. A GPU recommendation cannot be made responsibly without knowing the game, target resolution, desired frame rate, and existing hardware. Likewise, an SSD may be a storage recommendation—as it is for Silent Hill 2—but the available evidence does not establish it as an FPS upgrade.
