The best starting point for smoother WARDOGS play is not a universal preset. Match the game to your hardware target, then test one change at a time in a repeatable scene. For an FPS-first baseline, lower shadows and expensive effects, turn off motion blur, depth of field and bloom, keep view distance high, and compare native rendering with an upscaler your GPU supports. Treat those values as a starting hypothesis: WARDOGS is in Early Access, and the same setting can behave differently across systems and builds.
A practical starting preset
Use the following as a controlled first pass rather than a guaranteed “best” configuration. Apply it at the resolution you actually intend to play, record how the game feels, and keep only changes that improve both frame consistency and visibility.

| Setting area | FPS-first starting point | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and rendering | Start from the Steam target closest to your hardware. Compare native rendering with an available upscaler such as FSR, DLSS or XeSS. | Upscaling can raise frame rate by rendering internally below output resolution, but may introduce softness, shimmering or other artifacts. |
| Shadows | Low | Lower shadow quality is a common way to reduce GPU work. Check whether silhouettes and cover remain readable in your maps. |
| Global illumination | Off, if the option is available | Lighting may look flatter, but the Early Access guide lists this as a performance-oriented starting point. |
| Reflections | Low | Reduce costly reflective effects, especially if drops occur near water, wet surfaces or complex interiors. |
| Effects and particles | Lower quality when firefights cause dips | Watch for smoke, explosions and debris becoming harder to read. Keep the highest level that does not create disruptive drops. |
| View distance | High | The guide recommends retaining high view distance to help spot movement across open areas. Lower it only after testing visibility at your usual engagement ranges. |
| Motion blur, depth of field and bloom | Off | These effects can soften motion or bright details. Disabling them generally makes targets and sight transitions easier to inspect. |
| VSync | Choose based on tearing versus latency | Enabled VSync can remove tearing but may add input latency or cap frame rate. Disabled VSync can feel quicker and run faster while allowing tearing. |
This configuration is derived from a current Early Access settings guide and the game’s settings descriptions, not from a controlled benchmark. Community comparisons do not use one shared test scene or a complete record of every setting, so no preset can promise the same FPS on every PC.

| Tier | Operating system | Processor | Graphics examples | Memory and storage | Published performance condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 10 | Intel Core i5-8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3500 | NVIDIA GTX 1660 or Radeon RX 590 | 16 GB RAM; 50 GB available storage | 1080p Low at 60 FPS, using upscaling |
| Recommended | Windows 11 | Intel Core i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5700X | NVIDIA RTX 3070 or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT | 16 GB RAM; 50 GB available storage | 1440p Medium at 70+ FPS native, or 4K Medium at 60+ FPS using upscaling |
Both tiers list broadband connectivity and 16 GB of RAM, while the processor and graphics examples change substantially. Compare the complete bundle rather than deciding from a CPU or GPU name alone. A machine near the minimum target may need 1080p Low with upscaling; a system near the recommended target has a published path to 1440p Medium native or 4K Medium upscaled, subject to the conditions above.
Measure a baseline before changing settings
Without a repeatable reference, it is easy to mistake a quieter scene or a different match for a faster configuration. Use this short test loop whenever you tune WARDOGS:
- Choose your goal. Decide whether you are targeting 1080p, 1440p or 4K, and whether native rendering or upscaling is acceptable.
- Record the initial state. Note the resolution, preset, upscaler, VSync state and any frame-rate cap. Record average FPS if your overlay provides it, but also note hitching, sudden drops and how consistent camera movement feels.
- Use the same situation. Revisit one repeatable scene or a similar part of a match. Open areas, dense interiors and large firefights stress different parts of the renderer.
- Change one group. For example, test shadows alone, then return to the baseline before testing reflections. Changing many options together hides which trade-off helped.
- Check visibility. Look at distant movement, dark corners, smoke and bright effects. A higher counter can still be a poor result if opponents become difficult to see.
- Check input feel. Pan, aim, build and enter vehicles after each meaningful change. VSync and frame delivery can affect responsiveness even when the average FPS appears similar.
- Keep a change only when it wins. Save the combination that gives a steadier feel and acceptable image quality, not the one with the highest number in a single moment.
Repeat the process after a major game or graphics-driver update. WARDOGS is Early Access, so option behavior, performance and available labels can change.
How each graphics option affects smoothness and visibility
Resolution, native rendering and upscaling
Output resolution determines how large the final image is, while native rendering draws the scene at that output resolution. An upscaler renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output, which can free GPU time for higher frame rates. The settings reference lists FSR, DLSS and XeSS among the anti-aliasing or upscaling choices. The available options depend on your hardware and the current game build.
Compare an upscaler against native rendering in the same scene. Inspect thin geometry, distant player outlines, foliage, wires and moving objects for shimmer or loss of detail. If an upscaler produces distracting artifacts, try a higher quality mode or native rendering with lower-cost effects instead. If native 1440p or 4K is below your frame-rate goal, the Steam recommended targets specifically describe upscaled paths: 4K Medium at 60+ FPS upscaled, or 1440p Medium at 70+ FPS native.

Anti-aliasing and effects quality
Higher anti-aliasing and effects quality can reduce performance. Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges, while effects quality governs expensive visual work such as complex particles and other scene effects. Lower these when GPU usage is high or when large firefights cause drops. Compare target readability before accepting the lowest value; excessive reduction can make edges noisy or effects harder to interpret.
Shadows, global illumination and reflections
Shadows and indirect-lighting calculations can be expensive because they cover many objects and lights. The current Early Access guide’s performance starting point is low shadows, global illumination off and low reflections. Test those changes in both outdoor and indoor areas. If disabling global illumination makes interiors too flat to navigate comfortably, restore it and reduce another expensive option instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEffects and particles during firefights
Explosions, smoke, debris and other particles can create short frame-time spikes even when ordinary running looks smooth. If your baseline is acceptable until a large firefight, lower effects or particle detail first and repeat the same type of encounter. Keep enough detail to distinguish smoke, muzzle flashes and environmental hazards. The useful result is steadier delivery under combat load, not merely a higher reading while standing still.
View distance
The guide recommends high view distance because open areas reward early detection. Reducing it may remove distant geometry or movement that helps you identify a threat. Test view distance at the ranges where you normally fight, then lower it only if the performance gain is large enough to justify the visibility loss. Reports about low or “Potato” configurations changing visibility are tied to particular builds and incomplete comparisons; they do not establish a universal advantage.
Motion blur, depth of field and bloom
Turn motion blur, depth of field and bloom off for a clear competitive baseline. Motion blur can smear a fast turn, depth of field can soften parts of the scene, and bloom can spread bright light over nearby details. If you prefer a more cinematic image after performance is stable, re-enable one effect at a time and check whether it interferes with spotting or aiming.

VSync and frame-rate behavior
VSync synchronizes completed frames with the display and can remove visible tearing. The settings reference also warns that it may add input latency or cap frame rate. Disabling it can reduce latency and allow a higher frame rate, but tearing may appear. Make the choice by observing your own display:
- Use VSync when: tearing is distracting and the added latency is acceptable.
- Disable VSync when: responsiveness matters more and tearing is minor or absent.
- Retest after changing it: compare rapid camera movement and aiming, not just a standing view.
Control settings for a more responsive feel
WARDOGS exposes bindings for combat, movement, construction and interaction actions. There is no verified universal infantry sensitivity or complete official control preset in the available documentation, so copy-pasting another player’s numbers is unlikely to be reliable. Build a layout that keeps the actions you use under pressure reachable without releasing movement controls.
Organize bindings around priority
- Keep movement, crouch or stance changes and primary combat actions on keys or buttons you can reach while moving.
- Place construction and interaction actions where you can activate them deliberately rather than accidentally during a fight.
- Use the control screen to check for conflicts after rebinding. Test every changed action in a safe situation before entering a demanding match.
- Prefer a consistent layout across infantry and vehicles where the game permits it, so muscle memory does not change unexpectedly.
Adjust mouse or stick sensitivity in small increments. Make one change, perform the same turn or tracking exercise, and keep it only if you can stop on a target more reliably. Because authoritative infantry and vehicle sensitivity values are not established, the useful reference is your repeatable movement test rather than a published number.
Helicopter controls
A September 25, 2026 Early Access guide recommends enabling rotary vehicle mouse control and starting helicopter mouse sensitivity around 30–50 percent. Those figures are a guide’s starting range, not an official universal value. Pilots use different hand movements and control preferences, so calibrate in a low-risk environment:
- Enable rotary vehicle mouse control in the vehicle-control options if the toggle is present in your build.
- Set helicopter mouse sensitivity near the middle of the 30–50 percent starting range.
- Perform slow yaw, pitch and roll inputs, then repeat them at higher speed.
- Lower sensitivity if you overshoot corrections; raise it if the helicopter feels unable to respond before you run out of mouse space.
- Recheck the setting after changing general mouse sensitivity, because the relationship between the two can vary by build.
Choose a profile by your hardware and target
Near the minimum Steam target
Use 1080p Low with upscaling as the closest published target. Start with low shadows, low reflections, global illumination off, reduced effects and the three clarity-related effects disabled. Keep view distance high if distant spotting remains acceptable. Measure combat-heavy scenes; a system that reaches 60 FPS in an empty area may still hitch during particles and explosions.

Between the minimum and recommended targets
Begin at 1080p or 1440p with a balanced quality level, then decide whether native rendering or an upscaler gives the better combination of clarity and consistency. Retain high view distance and spend performance on the settings that matter most to your preferred maps. Do not assume that one component determines the result: the official bundles pair processor, graphics card, memory and operating system with a specific target.
Near the recommended Steam target
For 1440p, the published reference is Medium at 70+ FPS native. For 4K, it is Medium at 60+ FPS with upscaling. If your system falls short, reduce shadows, reflections and effects before sacrificing view distance. If native 4K is too demanding, compare a quality-oriented upscaler with native 1440p rather than lowering every setting indiscriminately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot the symptom, not just the FPS number
Frame rate is high but the game feels uneven
Repeat the test in a combat-like scene and watch for short drops or inconsistent frame delivery. Lower effects or particle detail, then test again. Averages can hide the spikes that make camera movement feel rough.
The image tears during turns
Try VSync on and compare the same rapid camera movement. If tearing disappears but controls feel delayed or the frame rate is capped, disable VSync again and decide which trade-off is less disruptive on your display.

Distant players are difficult to identify
Restore high view distance and compare native rendering with a higher-quality upscaling mode. Avoid judging visibility from a single low-quality or “Potato” configuration; community reports are build-specific and not controlled comparisons.

Firefights cause sudden drops
Lower effects or particle detail, then shadows and reflections if necessary. Test in the same type of large engagement so you know the change addressed the spike rather than a quieter moment.
A helicopter feels twitchy or sluggish
Confirm rotary vehicle mouse control is enabled, then adjust helicopter sensitivity in small steps from the 30–50 percent guide range. Calibrate yaw, pitch and roll separately through repeated movements instead of adopting another pilot’s exact value.
Controls feel uncomfortable after rebinding
Return to the control screen, check for duplicate bindings or accidental conflicts, and test combat, movement, construction and interaction actions individually. Comfort and reliable access are more defensible goals than an unverified “pro” layout.

When a graphics-card upgrade is justified
Tuning existing hardware is the first practical step; the Steam requirement does not prove that any particular reader needs to buy a component. Consider an upgrade only after you have measured a repeatable shortfall at your desired resolution and confirmed that lower-cost settings or upscaling do not deliver an acceptable image.
Steam’s recommended examples—NVIDIA RTX 3070 and AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT—are conditional reference points for the published 1440p Medium 70+ FPS native or 4K Medium 60+ FPS upscaled targets. They are not a promise that every card with a similar name will produce the same result in every current build. Check the complete target bundle, available power and cooling, and the resolution you actually plan to use before spending money.
What can and cannot be concluded from current guidance
The official material establishes target hardware bundles and explains the trade-offs of anti-aliasing, upscaling and VSync. The Early Access guide supplies a sensible FPS-oriented starting point and a helicopter sensitivity range. It does not establish a universal preset, and no independent controlled benchmark with a shared scene and complete settings record is available here.
Use the settings above as a repeatable method: start from the closest published target, preserve visibility-critical options such as view distance when possible, reduce expensive effects that cause measurable drops, and validate every change in the build and situations you actually play.
