Use the highest graphics detail that keeps a demanding game smooth over a sustained session—not simply the highest setting or frame-rate number. For longer play or better battery efficiency, lower the frame-rate cap first, then reduce rendering resolution or demanding visual effects as needed. The right balance depends on the game, phone, and operating system.
Choose a stable frame rate before maximizing graphics
A higher frame-rate target gives the game less time to render each frame. Apple’s developer documentation illustrates the difference: 30 fps allows about 33 milliseconds per frame, 40 fps allows 25 milliseconds, and 60 fps allows about 16 milliseconds. If a phone cannot meet the target consistently in busy scenes, the result may feel less smooth than a lower, steadier setting. Apple’s guidance on game graphics performance recommends adapting settings to the device’s performance.

Start with the game’s balanced, medium, or default preset. Play a repeatable demanding section for long enough to notice dips or uneven pacing, then increase visual detail only if frame delivery remains smooth. This is more useful than judging a preset by a brief opening scene or its peak frame rate.

What to change when the game stutters or heats up
Games that push the CPU and GPU can generate heat. Android explains that thermal throttling may reduce performance and affect battery drain. Apple recommends that portable games adapt their workload by lowering rendering resolution, limiting frame rate, or using less-detailed models, textures, and shaders. Android’s performance guidance and Apple’s graphics guidance both support reducing workload rather than insisting on maximum detail.

- LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
- Lower the frame-rate cap to the next target the phone can sustain during demanding scenes.
- Reduce rendering resolution if the game offers a resolution or render-scale control. This can reduce the work needed to draw each frame, though the image may look softer.
- Turn down expensive visual options such as effects, shadows, or model and texture detail when the game exposes them. Prioritize clarity at the phone’s screen size over settings that are hard to notice during play.
- Change one setting at a time and replay the same demanding section. That makes it easier to identify which trade-off improves consistency without sacrificing more image quality than necessary.
Match display refresh to the game’s frame-rate target
Frame rate describes how many frames the game produces; display refresh rate describes how often the screen can refresh. They are related, but they are not interchangeable. Android notes that higher display refresh rates use more power. If the screen refreshes faster than the game’s frame-rate target, the extra refresh may use power without increasing the game’s frame rate. Where the phone and game allow coordination, choose a display refresh rate near the frame-rate target rather than running a higher refresh rate without a benefit. Android’s refresh-rate guidance explains the relationship and device behavior.
Available frame-rate and refresh-rate choices vary. Android’s examples include game targets such as 30 or 60 fps and display rates such as 60, 90, or 120 Hz, but a particular phone or game may offer different options. Android 15 sets a 60 Hz default for games, and the system may override a higher refresh request based on battery or temperature. Check what the phone and game actually do instead of assuming that a selected option guarantees a particular rate. Android’s documentation on refresh rates describes these version-specific behaviors.

Use battery and game modes as additional controls
Android
Some Android devices provide Game Mode preferences that balance performance against battery use. Android’s FPS throttling feature, available on Android 13 or later, can also limit frame rate. Android reports that FPS throttling can result in up to a 50% GPU power reduction and a 20% system power reduction. Those figures describe potential power reductions from the intervention; they do not mean a player will get 50% or 20% more play time. Availability and behavior depend on the device, game, and system implementation. Android’s FPS throttling documentation gives the feature’s scope and figures, while its Game Mode guidance describes performance and battery preferences.

Apple’s published advice on adapting graphics settings is aimed at game developers; it does not establish one universal graphics-settings menu for every game. Use the frame-rate and graphics options the individual game provides. Apple advises developers to respond to Low Power Mode by adapting graphics settings, but the available controls and resulting behavior can differ between games. Apple’s graphics guidance explains the adaptation, and Apple’s Low Power Mode information describes the system feature.

Compare presets fairly
When deciding between two presets, compare them in the same demanding scene and under similar starting conditions. Look at sustained frame rate and pacing, visual clarity on the phone’s screen, heat and consistency later in the session, and battery use across the same play period. No standardized consumer test or universal game-by-game result establishes one best preset for every phone; hardware capability, cooling, panel refresh rate, game support, and operating-system behavior all matter.
