Google’s specifications list 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, compared with 2 GB and 8 GB on Chromecast with Google TV (4K). Both support output up to 4K and list HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG. Those capabilities do not guarantee that a particular Plex file will Direct Play: that depends on the file, client, server settings, and the rest of your playback chain.

Specifications describe device capabilities, not Plex playback results. Plex’s Android TV and Google TV app can use Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding depending on whether the media and playback conditions are compatible. Plex support documentation

What Direct Play means for Plex
Direct Play
Plex sends compatible media to the client as-is. For this to happen, the client must support the relevant media format and playback conditions must allow it.
Direct Stream
Plex repackages compatible streams when needed. This is different from sending the original file unchanged, and it is also different from converting the media itself.

Transcoding
Plex changes media to fit the client or a playback condition. A 4K label on a device does not establish that it can Direct Play every 4K container, video or audio codec, subtitle track, or HDR profile.
There is no complete, current Google TV model-by-model compatibility matrix established here for containers, codecs, subtitles, Dolby Vision profiles, or lossless audio. Check the format and tracks in your own files against the Plex client and the rest of your equipment rather than treating resolution or a device specification as proof of Direct Play. How to choose between the two 4K Google TV options
Choose Google TV Streamer (4K) when Ethernet and capacity matter
Google lists built-in Ethernet, 4 GB RAM, and 32 GB storage for the Streamer. That makes it the more suitable shortlist choice if you specifically want a wired network connection or value the additional memory and storage. These specifications do not show that it will Direct Play a particular file more reliably than another client.

The 4K Chromecast has a dongle form factor and lower listed memory and storage. It still supports up to 4K output and the same listed HDR formats as the Streamer. Availability and price change, so compare current legitimate listings before deciding whether the previous-generation device makes sense for you.

Do not shortlist the HD Chromecast for 4K
Google identifies Chromecast with Google TV (HD) as not supporting 4K. It may suit an HD setup, but it does not meet a 4K-output requirement. Google 4K requirements
Check the complete 4K playback chain
Google’s requirements say HDCP 2.2 is required for 4K; a 4K-capable display is needed to view 4K, and HDR content requires an HDR-capable display. Google’s support page also gives an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps for viewing 4K content. That is Google’s general streaming guidance, not a Plex home-network bitrate threshold or a guarantee for a particular file. Google 4K requirements

- Display and connection: Confirm the display supports the resolution and HDR format you intend to watch, and that the connection supports HDCP 2.2 for 4K.
- Network: Choose wired Ethernet if it fits your home setup and you want a built-in wired option; otherwise, assess your Wi-Fi connection where the device and Plex server will be used.
- Audio chain: Check the required audio format and pass-through behavior with your actual TV, receiver, or soundbar. A device’s format support alone does not establish how the full chain will handle a given track.
- HDMI cable: Google recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable for optimal Google TV Streamer performance; it is sold separately. This is setup guidance, not evidence that a cable improves Plex Direct Play. Google specifications and setup guidance
- Media: Check the exact video, audio, subtitle, container, and HDR characteristics of files you care about. Different tracks or subtitles can affect playback behavior.
Verify Plex playback with a representative file
- Install the regular Plex app for Android TV or Google TV. Plex says its official Android TV and Google TV devices can run the regular Android app. Plex TV app support
- Choose a file that represents your library. Include the video, audio, subtitle, and HDR characteristics you actually expect to play, especially if a particular 4K file is the reason for upgrading.
- Play it through your intended setup. Test with the display and receiver or soundbar you will use, and with the subtitle and audio track you normally select.
- Inspect playback details in Plex Dashboard. Confirm whether Plex reports Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding. If it transcodes or buffers, investigate the playback details and conditions rather than assuming the resolution rating explains the result.
A single successful file test establishes behavior for that tested file and setup, not universal support for every 4K file in a library. Plex’s playback modes and format support are client- and media-dependent. Plex playback documentation
Is NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro an alternative?
NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro is an adjacent Plex option, but it is an Android TV/SHIELD product rather than a Google TV device. Plex publishes SHIELD-specific documentation, including hardware decoding information and limitations when running Plex Media Server on SHIELD.
