Its reference-image tools may help preserve a subject, but support depends on the selected model; Adobe does not promise that every model will keep a person, character, or product consistent across edits. There is no verified head-to-head test here establishing a best-performing service. Choose by the subject you need to preserve, the edits you plan to make, and how much correction you can accept.
What does “Google Nano Banana” mean?
“Nano Banana” is an umbrella name for Gemini image-generation models, not one fixed product with unchanging capabilities. Google’s developer documentation describes Nano Banana 2.1 as its current high-efficiency workhorse, Nano Banana 2 Lite as optimized for speed rather than multiple reference inputs or sequential edits, Nano Banana 2 as a previous-generation workhorse, Nano Banana Pro as the premium model for complex visual work, and the original Nano Banana (Gemini 2.5 Flash Image) as a legacy model. Names and availability can change, so comparisons should identify the specific model and date rather than treating Nano Banana as a single benchmark. In Gemini Apps, Google says Nano Banana 2 can edit images created in Gemini or uploaded images, and can combine multiple uploaded images. Google describes Nano Banana Pro as an option for paid subscribers seeking additional detail, including text rendering and infographics. Which model is available depends on the app and plan. (Google, Gemini Apps Help, accessed October 7, 2026.)

Adobe Firefly: a multi-model editing workspace
Firefly lets users upload an image and describe changes in everyday language; the selected image model applies edits to the image. Users can choose Adobe models or partner models, and can add reference or subject images with models that support those inputs. That makes Firefly a reasonable option if you want prompt-led editing and model choice in an Adobe environment—not a documented guarantee of identity preservation.
#1 Best Overall
Adobe’s help page, updated September 10, 2026, lists different output resolutions by model: Firefly and Gemini 3 with Nano Banana Pro support 1K and 2K in the described workflow, while Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2 supports 4K. These are model- and workflow-specific product details, not evidence that all Firefly models offer the same settings or that higher resolution improves consistency.
Adobe also lists partner models including FLUX.2, FLUX 1.1, FLUX.1 Kontext, Luma AI Ray3, and OpenAI GPT Image. Google Gemini models are available in Firefly’s Generate Image module and Firefly Boards, according to Adobe’s Nano Banana product page. The existence of these choices is useful for exploration, but it does not establish which partner model is most consistent for a particular subject or edit sequence.

Other services: candidates, not verified winners
Midjourney and OpenAI image generation are names readers may encounter when looking for alternatives. The current primary documentation reviewed for this comparison does not establish their feature sets for sequential, reference-guided consistency. They should not be treated as proven winners here, nor should an unverified ranking or third-party claim substitute for testing the exact task.

How do Nano Banana’s reference limits compare with Firefly?
Google publishes reference-input limits for its models. These are maximum input counts, not measures of how faithfully an image will preserve identity. Firefly documentation describes reference-image support as model-dependent but does not state a comparable universal count in the cited help material.
Rank #3
| Model or workspace | Character references | High-fidelity object references | Total reference images | What the figures mean |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana 2.1 / Gemini 3.1 Flash Image | Up to 4 | Up to 10 | Up to 14 | Google API documentation’s stated input limits; not an identity-fidelity guarantee. |
| Nano Banana Pro | Up to 5 | Up to 6 | Up to 14 | Google API documentation’s stated input limits; not an identity-fidelity guarantee. |
| Adobe Firefly | Not stated in the cited Adobe help page | Not stated in the cited Adobe help page | Not stated in the cited Adobe help page | Reference or subject images are supported depending on the selected model. |
More reference slots can help provide context, but a larger input allowance alone does not show that a model will maintain a face, character, or product through a series of changes. Google DeepMind itself cautions that its model “excels at character consistency, but it may not always get it right.”
How should you choose a tool for consistent edits?
Decide what must stay the same
A real person’s likeness, a fictional character, a product’s shape, and an overall visual style are different consistency goals. Select references that show the details that matter—such as a face, silhouette, distinctive markings, or product features—and judge whether those details survive the changes you actually need.
Rank #4
Run the same short sequence in each candidate
Use identical reference images and prompts wherever each service permits. Save the inputs, prompts, and outputs so you can compare results rather than relying on memory or one especially successful image.
- Establish the subject: generate or edit a clear starting image using the reference material.
- Change the setting: move the subject into a different environment without asking for unrelated changes.
- Make a local edit: change one detail, such as clothing or a product feature, and inspect whether other parts drift.
- Change the angle: repeat with a different pose or camera angle to see whether recognition holds across turns.
- Check recovery: determine whether you can return to an earlier result, continue a conversation, or reopen a previous generation if an edit goes wrong.
This is a practical evaluation method, not a reported test result. A single attractive output cannot establish repeatability. Google also notes that complex edits and image blending can produce imperfect results.
Best Value
Inspect more than likeness
- Reference handling: find out whether the tool accepts subject references, style references, multiple images, or only some of these, and check any model-specific limits.
- Local control: look for unwanted changes outside the area you asked to edit.
- Iteration: check whether the workflow preserves edit history. Adobe documents a History panel for returning to prior generations.
- Resolution and text: confirm the setting available for your chosen model. Generated text and fact-heavy diagrams still need review; a feature description is not an accuracy guarantee.
What should you check before using Firefly?
Access, generative credits, and model availability can vary by plan and by Firefly feature. Adobe says free users receive a daily allotment of generations and paid plans provide Nano Banana Pro and additional generations, but the live plan details should be checked before subscribing because quotas and access can change.
Commercial suitability is a separate decision from image consistency. Adobe says creators are responsible for deciding whether a partner model is appropriate for a commercial project, taking account of the model’s focus, training, and commercial-use safety. Review the current vendor terms for your region and intended use rather than assuming that availability in Firefly settles the rights question.
