“Google Maps alternative” can mean a different navigation app, a better way to browse local businesses, or a tool for planning a trip. For finding places, compare how an app handles nearby searches, lets you change the search area, filters results, presents useful details, and helps you explore through photos, street-level imagery, or curated recommendations.

On the documented features available here, Apple Maps is the clearest choice to try first for browsing nearby and exploring an area. Google Maps remains a capable baseline rather than a weak option: its App Store listing describes local search, reviews and photos, restaurant filters, saved lists, and trip-planning functions. Neither service’s feature descriptions establish that its listings or recommendations are more accurate or comprehensive than the other’s.

Apple Maps: the strongest documented alternative for exploring nearby
Apple Maps supports several ways to move from a general search to a useful shortlist. Nearby categories include restaurants, gas stations, coffee, hotels, bars, fast food, groceries, and shopping centers. You can search for a specific type of place—Apple gives “playgrounds” and “parks” as examples—or ask Siri, then drag the map to look for results in a different area.

Narrow the results and inspect place cards
For restaurants, Apple describes filters for cuisine, price range, and takeout; results update when you move the map. A place card can include an address, hours, website, phone number, price range, photos, accepted payments, and whether dogs are allowed. Which details appear can depend on the place and available local information.

Look Around provides street-level views in select cities. Apple also says Maps includes more than 1,000 curated Guides in cities around the world; that is Apple’s stated feature count, not an independent measure of the Guides’ quality or coverage. In select U.S. cities, a Local Lists feature offers suggestions based on what people view, share, and interact with on Apple Maps.

How to search nearby on iPhone
- Open Maps and choose a nearby category, or search for a place type such as “parks.” You can also ask Siri to find places nearby.
- Browse the results and open a place card to check available details such as hours, address, and photos.
- Drag the map to a different area when you want to search beyond the current view.
Apple Support cautions that nearby suggestions are not available in all countries or regions. Apple’s broader Maps feature descriptions also specify geographic limits for features such as Look Around, so check local availability rather than assuming every feature appears in your area.

Google Maps’ current App Store listing describes searching for local places and things to do, using reviews and photos to make decisions, and filtering restaurants by cuisine, hours, price, and rating. It also describes saving places to lists and trip-planning functions that include hotel booking and reservations. Google’s product page highlights neighborhood recommendations and shared place lists, with recommendations described as available only in the United States and India.
Rank #3
These are product descriptions, not independent performance comparisons. Google’s listing notes that some features are unavailable in some countries or cities. If you already use Google Maps, its mix of discovery and planning may meet your needs; trying another app makes sense when a specific feature or local availability matters more to you.

Yelp
Yelp is a plausible complement when your search is specifically about local businesses. Its official homepage identifies categories including restaurants, dentists, bars, beauty salons, and doctors. The available information does not support a full comparison of its map browsing, geographic coverage, or current discovery features against Apple Maps and Google Maps.
HERE WeGo and OpenStreetMap
Both are options you can evaluate for your own needs, but the available official-site information does not establish their current nearby-search, review, filter, and exploration features well enough for a fair feature-by-feature comparison here. That is a limit of the information available, not evidence that either service lacks those capabilities.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Which one should you try?
- Try Apple Maps first if you want to browse nearby categories, move the search area, filter restaurants, inspect detailed place cards, or explore through Look Around and Guides—after checking local availability.
- Stick with Google Maps if its local search, reviews, photos, restaurant filters, saved lists, or trip-planning features already suit how you plan outings. Check whether the features you rely on are offered in your country or city.
- Add Yelp to your search when you want to look across its local-business categories, while verifying that it serves your location and use case.
- Evaluate HERE WeGo or OpenStreetMap directly if you are considering them for discovery; the feature details covered here are not enough to rank them fairly for that job.
