For an iPhone with CarPlay, start with Apple Maps; for live, community-reported road information, consider Waze; and for downloaded maps, compare Apple Maps, HERE WeGo, and TomTom GO Navigation in the areas where you drive. None is established here as universally more accurate than Google Maps.

Apple Maps: a natural choice for iPhone and CarPlay
Apple says Maps in iOS 17 and later can use downloaded offline maps for place information and navigation, including turn-by-turn driving directions and estimated arrival times. Maps take up device storage, are not offered in every area, and a download for one region should not be treated as coverage everywhere. Check Apple’s offline maps guidance for availability and details.

Apple also documents turn-by-turn directions through CarPlay. Its CarPlay directions instructions describe an internet-connected workflow; that should not be conflated with using a previously downloaded map offline. Traffic conditions and estimated travel times are not available in all regions. Confirm CarPlay support in your market and vehicle before relying on it.
Waze: for connected, community-reported road information
Waze is designed around community contributions to traffic and navigation information. The company says that driving with Waze open shares real-time information, and its availability guidance encourages a mobile data plan for use on the go. That makes it a candidate for drivers who value reported road events, but usefulness can depend on data access and activity from other Waze users on local roads. It is a weaker fit if dependable offline navigation is the main requirement.
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Waze is Google-owned, so it is an alternative app, not an independent alternative company. The Tom’s Guide comparison identifies that ownership and cautions that its comparison is not a controlled route-accuracy test.
HERE WeGo: compare offline maps and car guidance
HERE’s official WeGo help lists offline maps, car guidance, and real-time journey updates. Those features make it worth comparing if you want downloaded maps alongside driving directions. The listed capabilities do not establish coverage for every country or prove that every function works in every current app version. Check the map area and the specific features offered for your device and region.

TomTom GO Navigation: check current terms before subscribing
TomTom describes GO Navigation as offering downloadable maps for offline driving, with regions available to download as needed. Its announcement from September 1, 2020 also contains subscription figures from that time; they are historical, not current price evidence. Before choosing it, check the current app listing and terms for your country and platform, including price, any trial, offline regions, and in-car compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to choose an app for your routes
- Start with your phone and car. If you use an iPhone and want built-in CarPlay directions, check Apple Maps and confirm that your vehicle and region support the feature. For any other in-car interface, verify compatibility in the relevant current app listing; the evidence here does not establish Android Auto support for these options.
- Decide how much connectivity you can count on. If you often drive without service, compare downloadable maps and confirm that your entire route is covered before leaving. If live community reports matter more, Waze may fit, but plan for its connected use.
- Check the exact places you drive. Coverage and feature availability vary by area. A map download or feature available in one region does not guarantee it will be available along another route.
- Test your own common routes. A feature comparison is not a controlled route-accuracy ranking. Local map coverage, app behavior, and route conditions matter, so compare directions on the roads you actually use.
Are any of these apps more accurate than Google Maps?
No head-to-head route-accuracy result is established here. The available comparison explicitly says it is not a controlled accuracy test, and historical audience estimates do not measure navigation quality. Choose based on the features and coverage you can verify for your area rather than a blanket accuracy claim.
