Buy the Google Home Speaker (2026) if you want the most current Google smart-speaker platform. It costs $99.99 in the US and is designed for Gemini for Home, Matter, Thread and newer connectivity. Choose a discounted Nest Audio if music quality matters more than new features, a discounted Nest Mini for inexpensive room-by-room voice access, or a Nest Hub (2nd gen) when a screen is more useful than speaker performance.
Google is transitioning compatible home devices from the older Google Assistant experience toward Gemini for Home. That transition affects subscriptions, feature availability and, once enabled for a home, the ability to return to Google Assistant.

| Best compact budget speaker | Nest Mini (2nd gen), if substantially discounted | Excellent for timers, alarms and basic commands; aging hardware and uncertain availability. |
| Best with a screen | Nest Hub (2nd gen) | Useful for recipes, visual timers, calendars and touch controls rather than serious music listening. |

Google Home Speaker (2026): the best current Google speaker
The Google Home Speaker is the safest recommendation for a new buyer who specifically wants Google’s current ecosystem. Google announced it on June 17, 2026, with retail availability announced for June 25, and lists a US price of $99.99. Confirm live availability and regional pricing before ordering.
Hardware and connectivity
- 58 mm full-range driver and three far-field microphones.
- Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4 and Thread 1.3 border-router capability.
- Matter hub functionality through Google Home.
- Quad-core A55 processor at 2.0 GHz with an NPU, 1 GB LPDDR4 memory and 4 GB eMMC storage.
- Hardware microphone-mute switch, capacitive controls and a 30 W USB-C USB-PD PPS adapter with captive speaker cable.
- Dimensions of 3.4 inches high by 4.2 inches in diameter; 0.9 lb excluding the adapter.
Google markets richer 360-degree sound, but specifications and marketing do not establish that it sounds better than Nest Audio, Sonos or a conventional wireless speaker. Treat comparative audio quality as a testing question.
#1 Best Overall
- Google Audio Bluetooth Speaker Wireless Music Streaming - Chalk
- Music here. Music there. Music everywhere - Create a home audio system that fills your home with sound.* Nest Audio works together with your other Nest speakers and displays, Chromecast-enabled devices, or compatible speakers. And it's easy to set up.
- Rich, full sound. Room filling sound with 30 watt woofer, tweeter and tuning software. Cranks out powerful punchy music to fill your room
- Connect with family and friends - Nest Audio helps you stay in touch. Just say, “Hey Google” to broadcast messages on every Nest speaker and display in the house. Use your Nest speakers as an intercom and chat from room to room.
- Huge help around the house. You can say things like, "Hey Google, what's the weather this weekend?" Ask Google about the news or sports scores. - Includes LED Key Chain (Color May Vary)
Google also supports pairing up to two Home Speakers with a Google TV Streamer for a more immersive setup. This is a supported Google configuration, not a replacement for a conventional wired home-theater system; check the current configuration requirements before buying.
Who should buy it
- New Google Home users who want current hardware and the longest-looking support runway.
- Households interested in Gemini for Home, Matter devices or Thread networking.
- Living rooms and medium-sized rooms where one general-purpose speaker is preferable to several older units.
Who should choose something else
- Music-first buyers who can find a legitimate, discounted Nest Audio.
- People who only need a cheap timer or broadcast speaker.
- Anyone unwilling to use a cloud-connected assistant or concerned about a home-wide Gemini migration.
Nest Audio is still the sound-first bargain—only at the right price
Nest Audio has a dedicated woofer and tweeter, adaptive audio and a design intended for fuller room-filling playback. Independent testing has continued to rate it as the best-sounding Google speaker tested; see RTINGS’ Google speaker testing. That is a test-based legacy-model advantage, not proof that every room or listener will prefer it.
Google’s product direction has moved to the 2026 Home Speaker, and current reports say Nest Audio has been discontinued or removed from Google’s online store. Remaining stock may be retailer-dependent, refurbished or overpriced. Buy one only when it is meaningfully cheaper than $99.99, the unit is new or properly refurbished, the seller offers a return period and warranty, and the included power adapter is present. Do not pay launch-price money for older hardware simply because older buying guides called it the best Google speaker.
Its Gemini feature set may also differ from the newest speaker, especially for newly introduced capabilities. Google’s compatibility documentation is the authority for your country, language and firmware.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Nest Mini (2nd gen): useful for small rooms, not a main music system
The Nest Mini remains a practical bedroom, hallway, kitchen, desk or office device for timers, alarms, broadcasts, reminders and basic smart-home commands. Its compact size and likely low clearance price make it useful for deploying voice access in several rooms.
It is not the sensible choice for serious music in a large room. Google support still lists it as compatible with Gemini for Home, but current coverage indicates that Google has stopped directly selling it. Check the seller, factory-reset status, account unlinking, firmware-update capability, warranty, return policy and power adapter. If a used Nest Mini approaches $99.99, buy the current Home Speaker instead.

- Whole-Home Smart Audio – Get powerful, room-filling sound in 3 rooms at once or group all three speakers together for seamless multi-room playback. Perfect for homes, apartments, or offices.
- Stereo Pairing & Grouping – Pair two speakers for immersive stereo sound or assign each to different areas (e.g., kitchen, living room, bedroom) for dynamic audio throughout your space.
- Hands-Free Voice Assistant – With Google Assistant built in, control music, get answers, set timers, check the weather, and control smart home devices with simple voice commands.
- Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Connectivity – Stream your favorite music from services like Spotify, YouTube Music, and more via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Works with Android, iOS, and Chromecast-enabled apps.
- Smart Home Ready – Nest Audio integrates with thousands of compatible smart home devices – use your voice to dim lights, control thermostats, lock doors, and more.
Nest Hub (2nd gen): choose the display when visuals matter
The Nest Hub (2nd gen) is the better Google device for a kitchen, bedside table or control point where you need recipes, visual timers, calendars, photos, touch controls or compatible camera views. Google lists it as compatible with Gemini for Home.
Its screen does not make it the best music speaker. Choose a speaker-only model for stronger audio focus, less visual distraction and simple voice control; choose the Hub when seeing information or touching controls is central to the room.

Google Assistant versus Gemini for Home
Google Assistant is the older home voice-assistant layer. Gemini for Home is Google’s newer, more conversational system, designed for richer answers, follow-up questions and less rigid conversations. Google describes a transition and rollout rather than one identical global switch, so availability depends on country, language, device and firmware.
What is free and what is paid
Basic Gemini for Home voice-assistant functions are available without a subscription on supported devices where the rollout has reached you. Gemini Live, “Help me create” and some advanced features require Google Home Premium Standard. Google’s US store lists Standard at $10 per month or $100 per year and Advanced at $20 per month or $200 per year. Advanced is mainly relevant to camera-heavy households; Standard is the plan that matters to most speaker buyers.
Eligible new subscribers buying a Google Home Speaker receive six months of Standard, advertised by Google as a $60 value. The trial requires a Google Account and valid payment method, is limited to one trial per home at a time, ends unless renewed, and may be canceled if the device is returned. Confirm the checkout terms because promotional wording can change.
The migration warning
When Google offers Gemini for Home in the Google Home app, opting in applies to everyone in that home. Compatible devices added later use Gemini, and devices that become compatible can switch automatically. Google says the normal settings do not provide a way to switch that home back to Google Assistant.

- IMMERSIVE 360° SOUND – Enjoy rich, room-filling audio with clear vocals, detailed highs, and deep bass designed to enhance music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more.
- DESIGNED FOR MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT – Enjoy your favorite music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more with room-filling sound and impressive audio clarity.
- STEREO PAIRING CAPABILITY – Pair two compatible speakers together for a wider soundstage and enhanced stereo performance throughout your space.
- MODERN DESIGN WITH MULTIPLE COLOR OPTIONS – Features a sleek, contemporary design available in Sage, Porcelain, Berry, and Hazel to complement a variety of home décor styles.
- DESIGNED FOR EVERYDAY ENTERTAINMENT – Ideal for enjoying music, podcasts, radio stations, and other audio content with premium sound quality and simple operation.
Before accepting, test the commands your household depends on: lights, thermostats, locks, routines, media, broadcasts and reminders. Be especially cautious if you use multiple languages, accessibility features, exact Assistant phrasing or third-party integrations. A more conversational assistant is not automatically more deterministic for every command.
Compatibility, standards and services
Google lists the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant, subject to rollout and regional limits, for the Google Home Speaker, Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Hub (1st gen) and Google Home Mini (1st gen). Google lists minimum firmware of Cast 3.76 or higher for speakers and Fuchsia 28 or higher for displays. Older devices such as Google Home Max, the original Google Home and Nest Wifi point, plus some third-party speakers, support most Gemini features but not Gemini Live.
The Home Speaker’s Matter and Thread support can simplify connections to compatible smart-home products. Matter improves interoperability; it does not guarantee that every vendor-specific feature, scene or routine is exposed through Google voice control.
Supported services include Google Calendar, Tasks, Keep, Meet, Photos, Play Books, YouTube, YouTube Kids, YouTube Music and YouTube TV, along with music, podcast and radio providers. Controls vary by country, language, provider and account tier. “Works with Google Assistant” does not guarantee that every command works with every service. See Google’s supported-services list.
Is Google Home Premium worth paying for?
| Your use | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Timers, alarms, weather, music, broadcasts, lists and simple device commands | Premium is usually unnecessary. |
| Frequent natural conversations, interruptions, follow-up questions or brainstorming | Standard is the relevant plan because it includes Gemini Live and “Help me create.” |
| Several Nest cameras and interest in video-history search or daily summaries | Compare Advanced, whose additional value is primarily camera-related. |
At the displayed US prices, paying Standard monthly after the six-month trial costs $120 per year; annual billing is $100. That recurring cost can exceed the $99.99 hardware price, so do not treat the trial as a permanent feature. The speaker remains usable without Premium, but subscription-gated Gemini features end when the plan ends.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Kitchen
Choose Nest Hub (2nd gen) for recipes, visual timers, calendar information and touch controls. Choose the Home Speaker when music and screen-free operation matter more.
Living room
Choose the Home Speaker for the current platform, Matter and Gemini direction. Choose Nest Audio only when its price is substantially lower and music is the priority.

Multiple discounted Nest Minis can be economical for voice access and broadcasts. Compare the total cost with several current Home Speakers, and remember that older stock has more uncertain availability and support. Google supports grouped media across Google and Nest speakers, displays and Google Cast-enabled devices.
Existing Google Home owners
- Inventory current speakers, displays and third-party devices.
- Identify routines that depend on exact Assistant wording.
- Check household languages and accessibility requirements.
- Decide whether Gemini Live is worth a continuing subscription.
- Read the migration prompt before opting in; it applies to the home, not just the new speaker.
Setup and troubleshooting
Basic setup
- Plug the speaker into power.
- Install or open the Google Home app on a phone or tablet.
- Follow the app’s instructions to connect Wi-Fi and a Google Account.
Google’s setup guidance is available on the Home Speaker product page. Install available firmware before judging compatibility with Gemini or Matter.
If Gemini is unavailable
- Confirm your country and language are supported.
- Update the Google Home app and speaker firmware.
- Check that the device meets Google’s stated Cast or Fuchsia minimum.
- Look for an eligibility notice in the Google Home app; rollout is not simultaneous everywhere.
If a routine or third-party device fails
Test the underlying device in the Google Home app, then try the command with the device’s exact assigned name. Check the manufacturer integration and permissions. Do not assume Matter exposes every proprietary function. If the problem began after migration, document the failed command and review Google’s current compatibility guidance before rebuilding routines.
Privacy controls
The Home Speaker responds to “Hey Google” and “OK Google” through cloud-connected services. Its physical microphone switch prevents voice-command response; it does not make the speaker an offline assistant or delete stored activity. Use Google’s current Google Home and Assistant activity controls to review or delete voice history. Indicator lights show listening, processing or response states, while the hardware switch provides the clearest immediate control.
When not to buy a Google speaker
- Choose Alexa if Amazon services or broad device-market compatibility are more important to you.
- Choose HomePod for a household centered on Apple devices and Apple ecosystem integration.
- Choose Sonos or a conventional wireless speaker if sound quality matters far more than voice-assistant features.
- Choose a local or open smart-home voice system if cloud dependence and platform changes are unacceptable.
Final recommendation
For a new Google buyer, the Google Home Speaker (2026) is the best default: current hardware, Gemini for Home, Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi 6 and a $99.99 US price. Buy Nest Audio only as a discounted, warrantied sound-first bargain. Buy Nest Mini for cheap compact room coverage, not premium music. Choose Nest Hub (2nd gen) when a screen is more valuable than audio quality. Before enabling Gemini, remember that migration is home-wide and normally irreversible, and budget separately for Premium if Gemini Live is the reason you are buying.
