For golfers who want course maps plus useful everyday smartwatch features, the Garmin Approach S50 is the best-supported all-round choice in the available comparisons. The Garmin Approach S70 is the premium option for richer golf guidance, while the Shot Scope G6 is a simpler mapping watch that does not track shots. These watches differ not only in price tier but in map detail, shot-tracking effort and everyday features; check those differences before choosing.

Course counts indicate coverage, not the depth of map detail: a watch may have thousands of courses loaded while enhanced maps or green contours remain behind a membership. The listed course counts and battery figures are publisher-reported specifications, not independent lab measurements.

What the Garmin Approach S50 gives you
The S50 is the clearest match for golfers who want a golf GPS watch that can also serve as an everyday fitness and wellness watch. Garmin describes a 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, yardages to greens, hazards and layups on more than 43,000 courses, and PlaysLike Distance. The course count is Garmin’s figure on its product page, accessed October 9, 2026; course availability and map detail may vary.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIts non-golf feature set includes wrist-based heart rate, stress tracking, Body Battery and sleep monitoring. Garmin’s manual says the Garmin Golf app can upload scorecards and provide detailed statistics and shot analyses, making the phone app part of the broader post-round experience.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
- Be comfortable on and off the course with the lightweight ComfortFit nylon strap
- Battery life: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and up to 15 hours in GPS mode
- Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
- Playslike Distance feature tells you how far each shot truly is, with adjusted yardage for elevation changes
Map depth is the key caveat. Garmin says Premium CourseView maps, touch targeting and green contour data require a Garmin Golf membership. The large course-coverage figure should not be read as meaning every premium map layer is included without a membership.
When the Approach S70 is worth considering
The S70 is Garmin’s premium choice among the established models in the cited comparison. It offers a 1.2- or 1.4-inch AMOLED screen, virtual caddie and club recommendations with dispersion information, alongside enhanced PlaysLike Distance. Garmin also describes fitness and wellness functions for off-course use.
Rank #2
- Stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist - Physical size 43 x 43 x 11.4 mm - fits wrists with a circumference of 127-190 mm
Green-contour data requires an active Garmin Golf membership. Golf Monthly’s comparison places the S70 at the top of its picks and highlights its course maps, hazard distances and everyday health and fitness tracking. Choose it when those golf-guidance features and the larger-screen option matter more than keeping to a simpler feature set.
What you give up with simpler mapping watches
Shot Scope G6
Golf Monthly names the G6 its budget mapping pick and reports 36,000 preloaded courses, color hole maps, hazard distances, doglegs and layup points. It reports GPS runtime of two or more rounds, but that is a publisher comparison specification rather than an independently measured result. Most importantly, the same comparison explicitly lists no shot tracking. It is a reasonable fit if you want hole maps and basic course information without automatic shot data.

Bushnell iON Elite
Golf Monthly reports 38,000 preloaded courses, slope functionality, a movable pin and 12+ hours of battery life for the iON Elite. The runtime is a publisher-reported comparison figure; the cited material does not establish the exact conditions or model configuration behind it. Consider it as a GPS-focused alternative, not as a confirmed everyday health smartwatch or shot-tracking device.
Understand shot distance versus club tracking
Automatic shot-distance recording and club identification are separate features. Garmin says AutoShot detects swing speed and impact with the ball to measure and record shot distances. Score and statistics tracking also depend on using the watch correctly during the round: Garmin’s support guidance says to be on the correct hole and enter the score before teeing off on the next hole.
Rank #4
- Slim design with a stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display that brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
- Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
- Pair with optional Approach CT1 or CT10 club trackers (sold separately) for shot-tracking capabilities, so you have a clearer picture of which parts of your game to focus on
- Easily keep score as you play, and upload to the Garmin Golf smartphone app for advanced stat tracking and handicap calculation
- Leave your phone in the cart and get smart notifications sent to your wrist — including emails, texts and alerts when paired with your iPhone or Android smartphone
For club-level detail, compatible Garmin watches can pair with CT1 tags or CT10 sensors. Garmin lists the S44, S50 and S70 among compatible examples, but advises checking current compatibility information for the specific watch.
- CT1: Tap to pair before each shot. This adds an interaction at the point of play.
- CT10: After the sensors are attached and paired, they automatically track club use, according to Garmin.
Both accessory types can record club type, shot locations and distances when used with a compatible watch. If you only need distances and general round data, AutoShot may be enough; choose tags or sensors when knowing which club produced a shot is important.

Consider the announced Approach S72 carefully
Golf Monthly reported on October 6, 2026 that Garmin announced the Approach S72 in 43 mm and 47 mm sizes, with an AMOLED display, titanium bezel, sapphire lens, fabric band, biometric tracking and aerial imagery. That report establishes an announcement, not retail availability, current pricing or independent test results. Treat the S72 as a model to check for current status rather than a proven alternative to the S50 or S70.
How to choose before buying
- Decide how much map detail you need. Basic hole maps and hazard distances are different from enhanced CourseView maps and green contours. For the S50 and S70, confirm whether Garmin Golf membership features fit your needs.
- Choose the level of shot data. If you want recorded shot distances, look for AutoShot support. If you want club identification, verify watch compatibility and decide whether you prefer CT1’s tap-before-each-shot interaction or CT10’s automatic tracking after setup.
- Assess off-course use. If heart rate, sleep, stress or broader fitness functions matter, the S50 and S70 have the clearest support in the cited material. Do not assume those functions are present on a GPS-focused mapping watch.
- Check exact-model details before checkout. Prices, availability, membership benefits, battery life and compatibility can vary by region, watch size and use conditions. Verify the current product page and retailer listing for the exact model you plan to buy.
