Ghost(Pro) remains the managed route when you do not want to administer Linux, databases, backups or email delivery. Choose a 2GB VPS running Docker Compose if minimizing the monthly bill matters more than your time. A third-party managed host sits between those choices, but its pricing and service terms require careful verification.
Ghost(Pro) Starter pricing is the important uncertainty: the official 2026 listing shows $18 per month billed yearly, while a 2025 Ghost Forum post listed $15. Check Ghost’s live pricing page before committing. Self-hosting can cost roughly $3–4 per month for raw server capacity, or about $12 per month after adding a 2GB VPS, email delivery and backups, but you take responsibility for operations.

The short list: which Ghost hosting route fits you?
Ghost hosting is not one product. You are choosing between a managed Ghost service, a managed third-party host, or operating Ghost yourself on a virtual private server (VPS). The right answer depends less on the software than on who will handle updates, backups, email delivery, monitoring and incidents.
| Hosting route | Typical 2026 cost evidence | Who operates the server? | Focus | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antihost VPS with Docker | See the current plans | You or your administrator | Publishers who want a Linux VPS with full root access and a one-click Docker image | You own Ghost updates, security, backups, monitoring and deliverability |
| Ghost(Pro) | Starter listed at $18/month billed yearly; Publisher $29; Business $199 | Ghost | Writers, publications and teams that want a supported, low-maintenance service | Higher recurring cost and less infrastructure control |
| Third-party managed Ghost host | Varies; published figures for named providers are not verified here | The host | People seeking managed operations at a possible mid-range price | Support quality, limits and migration terms differ by provider |
| Self-hosted VPS with Docker Compose | About $3–4/month raw server cost in one secondary estimate; about $12/month for a realistic 2GB VPS plus email and backups | You or your administrator | Linux-comfortable publishers optimizing for cost and control | You own updates, security, backups, monitoring and deliverability |
| Self-hosted VPS with Ghost-CLI | Similar server and service costs to Docker; exact total depends on provider and add-ons | You or your administrator | Operators who prefer a traditional Node.js service installation | More host-level configuration and maintenance decisions |
The practical decision is straightforward: pay Ghost for convenience, pay a specialist host for delegated operations, or pay with your own time to reduce the invoice.

Ghost(Pro): the official managed option
Ghost(Pro) is Ghost’s own hosted service. You create a publication in Ghost’s environment instead of provisioning a Linux server, database and reverse proxy yourself. Secondary descriptions say the managed service includes email, a content-delivery network, SSL, backups and software updates; confirm the exact inclusions and limits for the plan you select because the pricing page is the authoritative source.
Current plan figures and what is confirmed
| Plan | Price shown in the 2026 official listing | Included limits or features stated in that listing | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $18/month, billed yearly | 1,000 members; one staff user | A 2025 forum post listed $15/month instead and said paid-tier monetisation was removed from Starter. Treat the current amount and feature set as live-page checks. |
| Publisher | $29/month, billed yearly | Three staff users; custom themes; paid subscriptions; advanced analytics | The $29 figure is consistent across the cited sources, but billing terms can change. |
| Business | $199/month, billed yearly | 15 staff users; priority support; 10,000 members | The $199 figure is consistent across the cited sources. |
| Custom | Not stated | 99.9% uptime SLA and a dedicated-IP option are described | Pricing and eligibility are not stated; request a current quote. |
Ghost’s developer documentation has also described Ghost(Pro) as starting “from $15/mo,” but that value was not independently rechecked. Plan names such as Creator and Team appear on a concierge-migration page, yet current prices for those names were not confirmed. No permanent free tier was confirmed. A 14-day free trial appears in one secondary account, but its current availability is unverified.
When Ghost(Pro) is worth the premium
- You publish rather than administer. The service removes routine server patching, database maintenance and deployment work.
- You need a clear support path. Ghost(Pro) is the official service, while self-hosting generally means diagnosing your own application, operating system and provider layers.
- Revenue features matter. Publisher is the first plan in the supplied 2026 listing explicitly showing paid subscriptions and custom themes.
- Your publication has a team. Compare staff-user limits, not just member limits, before selecting a plan.
What to verify before paying
- Open the live pricing page and confirm the Starter amount, annual-versus-monthly billing and tax treatment for your country.
- Check member, staff-user, storage, API and newsletter limits against your expected growth.
- Confirm which backup retention, email delivery and analytics capabilities are included in your exact plan.
- Read the migration and export documentation so you know how to leave if your needs change.
- Record the support response expectations and any uptime commitment; the 99.9% SLA is associated with the Custom tier, not automatically with every plan.
Self-hosting Ghost on a VPS
Self-hosting means renting a virtual machine, installing Ghost and its database, connecting a domain, configuring HTTPS and arranging outbound email. The server bill can be low, but the total cost includes services and your time.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The realistic resource floor
A 1GB machine is a risky production choice when MySQL runs on the same host. A DigitalOcean community thread titled “Ghost Blog on 1GB Droplet Crashes Every 5 Days or So” is cited as a practical warning. Secondary guidance consequently treats 2GB of RAM as the honest production floor for a small Ghost site with its database on the same VPS. That is a planning baseline, not a universal guarantee: traffic spikes, image processing, search, imports and other workloads can require more.
Rank #2
What self-hosting costs
| Cost component | Evidence or planning figure | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Raw VPS | Approximately $3–4/month in a 2026 secondary pricing guide | Compute, memory, disk and transfer allowance; excludes your labor and add-on services |
| Practical small-production setup | Approximately $12/month in a 2026 secondary estimate | A 2GB VPS plus transactional email and backups |
| Email delivery | Provider-dependent; not stated as a fixed amount | Reliable newsletter and member-email sending, separate from the web server |
| Backups | Provider- and retention-dependent; not stated as a fixed amount | Off-server copies that can actually restore your content and database |
The $3–4 figure is a raw-server estimate, not a like-for-like replacement for Ghost(Pro). The roughly $12 estimate is more realistic for a modest production site, but it still excludes the value of administration time, incident response and any paid monitoring.
Your operating responsibilities
- Apply Ghost, Node.js, operating-system and container updates safely.
- Maintain encrypted, off-server backups and test restores rather than merely checking that a backup job ran.
- Configure DNS, TLS certificates, firewall rules, SSH access and least-privilege accounts.
- Protect email reputation with correct domain authentication, bounce handling and a dedicated delivery service.
- Monitor disk, memory, CPU, database health, certificate expiry and failed jobs.
- Plan recovery for a failed VPS, corrupted database, expired domain or compromised credential.
Docker Compose or Ghost-CLI?
Docker Compose for Ghost 6
A 2026 deployment guide describes Docker Compose as Ghost 6’s primary official installation method. Compose packages Ghost and its dependencies into a repeatable configuration, making upgrades and recreation of a server more predictable than hand-editing a long list of services.
- Provision the host. Select a Linux VPS with at least 2GB RAM for a small production installation, attach a static address and restrict inbound traffic to the ports you need.
- Install Docker Engine and Compose. Use the current packages for your distribution and verify that the Docker service starts automatically.
- Start from the current Ghost 6 Compose configuration. Do not copy an old compose file blindly; check image versions, database settings, persistent volumes, domain and mail variables against the current Ghost documentation.
- Persist the right data. Store the content directory and database on durable volumes. A container rebuild without persistent volumes can remove the very data you meant to protect.
- Put HTTPS in front. Configure a reverse proxy or the supported TLS arrangement, then point your domain’s DNS records to the VPS and verify certificate renewal.
- Test the publication. Create an administrator, publish a draft, upload an image, send a test email and restart the stack to confirm that data survives.
- Document updates and rollback. Take a restorable backup before changing images or database versions, then record the previous image tag and configuration.
Compose reduces installation drift; it does not make operations automatic. You still need patching, logs, resource monitoring, backups and an email plan.

Ghost-CLI on a VPS
Ghost-CLI remains popular in secondary guides and is reported to work, although it was not independently verified in this review. It installs Ghost as a conventional application under a system user and can integrate with a web server and process manager. Choose it when you already understand Linux service management and prefer host-native files and commands. Choose Compose when you want the deployment represented as versioned configuration and are comfortable troubleshooting containers.
Whichever method you use, do not run both installation styles against the same production directory or database. Pick one lifecycle model, document it and test upgrades on a disposable instance first.
Third-party managed Ghost hosts
Managed alternatives can provide a middle ground: the provider operates the server while you pay a separate company for Ghost hosting. Secondary guides name Magic Pages, Midnight and PikaPods as examples. Their current prices, resource limits, backup policies and support commitments were not verified here, so treat every advertised figure as a lead for checking rather than a 2026 fact.
One secondary list gives PikaPods a starting figure of $3.30/month, and a vendor-adjacent description calls Midnight more affordable than Ghost(Pro). Neither claim is independently confirmed. Ask for the complete monthly total, not just the headline plan:

Other platform deployments
Hetzner is frequently recommended in secondary self-hosting guides. A reported June 15, 2026 price increase and a €5.49/month Ghost-capable machine were not traced to a primary Hetzner page, so confirm current regional pricing directly before using those numbers in a budget.

How to choose: a practical decision framework
Choose Ghost(Pro) when uptime and time matter most
Select the official service if a missed newsletter, broken upgrade or lost evening of troubleshooting costs more than the hosting premium. Publisher is the natural starting point for a publication that needs custom themes, paid subscriptions and advanced analytics; Starter may fit a smaller, non-monetized site if its live limits meet your needs.
Choose a 2GB VPS with Docker Compose when cost and control matter most
This route is the cheapest credible production baseline in the supplied figures, provided you can handle Linux administration. Budget for email and backups from day one. A one-click image that leaves you with 1GB of RAM and no restore plan is not equivalent to a maintained 2GB deployment.
Choose a managed third-party host when you want a service intermediary
This can reduce operational work without committing to Ghost(Pro), but only after you compare contract terms, exports, limits and support. A low sticker price is not a bargain if transactional email, backups or migration assistance are extra.
Launch checklists by route
Ghost(Pro) checklist
- Confirm the current plan price and billing period on the official pricing page.
- Map your expected members, staff users, themes, newsletters and subscriptions to plan limits.
- Connect your domain and complete DNS and sender-authentication steps.
- Import existing content and verify images, redirects, authors and publication dates.
- Send test newsletters to several mailbox providers before announcing the new site.
- Export a copy of your content and configuration as part of your own continuity plan.
VPS checklist
- Provision at least 2GB RAM for a small site whose database shares the machine.
- Set up SSH keys, firewall rules, automatic security updates and a non-root administrator.
- Deploy Ghost with one documented method—Compose or Ghost-CLI—not a mixture.
- Configure persistent storage, HTTPS, DNS and an external email-delivery service.
- Schedule off-server backups and perform a complete restore test before launch.
- Set alerts for memory pressure, disk usage, failed containers or services, certificate expiry and backup failures.
- Keep a written recovery runbook with provider access, DNS access and the last known-good version.
Migration and exit planning
Ghost’s portability is a major advantage, but migration still needs preparation. Before moving in, export your posts, tags, authors and settings where supported; copy original images; inventory redirects; and lower DNS TTLs ahead of the cutover. After importing, check canonical URLs, internal links, member records, newsletter sender settings and theme behavior.
Best Value
For a move from self-hosting to Ghost(Pro), schedule a content freeze or final export, verify the destination on a temporary URL, then switch DNS. For a move away from a managed provider, confirm that member data and theme assets are exportable—not only posts. Keep the old server available until DNS caches expire and you have validated forms, feeds, subscriptions and email delivery.
Common failure modes and fixes
The site crashes on a small VPS
Check memory pressure, swap activity, database logs and disk space first. If the database and Ghost share a 1GB host, resize to at least 2GB before chasing application-level symptoms. Then review image processing, import jobs and traffic spikes.
Newsletters land in spam or fail
Separate web hosting from email delivery. Verify SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, use a consistent sender domain, process bounces and avoid sending large campaigns directly from a new VPS address with no reputation.
An upgrade breaks the publication
Take a database and content backup, record the current image or package version, test the upgrade on a clone and review theme compatibility. With Compose, keep the previous image tag available for rollback; with Ghost-CLI, document the package and Node.js versions.
A restore produces an empty site
That usually means the backup covered only files or only the database. A usable Ghost recovery set includes the database, content images and the configuration secrets required to reconnect services. Perform a timed restore exercise, not a checkbox test.
The managed plan is unexpectedly expensive
Recalculate members, staff seats, email volume and annual billing. Then add the self-hosted equivalents—VPS, mail, backups, monitoring and your labor—before comparing totals. The cheapest invoice is not automatically the lowest cost of ownership.
Bottom line
Antihost VPS is listed first here for publishers who want Linux root access and a one-click Docker image while operating Ghost themselves. Ghost(Pro) Publisher at the consistently reported $29/month billed yearly remains the managed route for convenience and official support. Ghost(Pro) Starter needs a live-page check because published sources disagree between $15 and $18. A 2GB VPS and Docker Compose can reduce the recurring invoice, but updates, backups and email deliverability remain part of the work you take on. Managed alternatives can work well, yet their prices and promises must be verified individually. Whatever route you choose, preserve an export and test a restore before your first important issue.
