For most Windows users, mGBA is the best Game Boy Advance emulator to start with. It is a standalone program, the project publishes both installer and portable Windows builds, and its official FAQ describes GBA compatibility as “very good” while listing known bugs. This guide explains when an alternative makes more sense, how to set mGBA up so saves work, and where its limits are. It covers the emulator software only, not where to obtain game files.
Quick comparison of the main options
Three emulators come up most often for Windows. They differ less in raw playability than in how they are packaged and what you need from them.

| Option | Best fit | Documented strengths | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| mGBA (standalone) | Most Windows users who want a direct, dedicated GBA emulator | Official installer and portable builds, 32-bit and 64-bit; plays GBA, Game Boy, and Game Boy Color; remappable keyboard and gamepad controls; save states, fast-forward, rewind; local same-computer link cable support | The official FAQ records known GBA bugs and some unsupported peripherals; the version listed on the download page can change |
| VisualBoyAdvance-M (VBA-M) | Readers who want the continuation of the older VisualBoyAdvance project | Named by its official site as the continuation of VisualBoyAdvance; Windows x86_64, x86_32, and ARM64 builds listed for version 2.1.7 | No objective performance or compatibility comparison against mGBA is published by either project |
| RetroArch with the mGBA core | Readers who already use RetroArch to run several systems | Libretro documents an mGBA core, so GBA plays inside one multi-system frontend | mGBA’s FAQ warns that its libretro core is not always synchronized with standalone mGBA and may have issues no longer present upstream |
Choose by how you want to work: a single-purpose program versus a multi-system frontend, the Windows builds each project offers, the compatibility claims and caveats each one states, and whether you need a specific peripheral. The sources behind this guide do not establish that any one option is faster or more accurate than another, so this ranking reflects documented support rather than side-by-side testing.
Why mGBA is the default recommendation
Current Windows builds
The official mGBA downloads page lists 0.10.5 as the current release at the time of writing and offers a Windows installer and a portable archive, each in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Most readers on a 64-bit copy of Windows should pick the 64-bit build. Download from the project’s own page rather than a third-party aggregator, and check the page before installing because newer releases may have replaced 0.10.5.

Windows and graphics requirements
The official FAQ lists Windows 7 or newer among supported platforms. The GitHub README describes the requirements as minimal. It states that OpenGL 1.1 is the baseline, and that shaders and advanced rendering features need OpenGL 3.2 or newer. If your graphics driver only reports an older OpenGL version, the emulator should still run, but you should not expect those advanced options.
Compatibility, in the project’s own words
The official FAQ states: “Game Boy Advance emulation is currently very good,” and immediately notes that known bugs remain. The same FAQ says no GBA games fail to boot. That is the project’s own statement, not an independent benchmark, so treat it as a strong signal rather than a guarantee for every title. If a specific game misbehaves, check the FAQ’s known-bug list before assuming a setup error.
Feature set
mGBA’s README documents keyboard and gamepad control remapping, with many controllers mapped automatically. It also covers save states, fast-forward, rewind, real-time clock support for games that use it, and support for cartridge peripherals such as motion sensors and rumble. It plays Game Boy and Game Boy Color games as well as GBA titles.

Alternatives worth considering
VisualBoyAdvance-M (VBA-M)
VBA-M is the continuation of the VisualBoyAdvance project, and its official site lists Windows builds for x86_64, x86_32, and ARM64 systems at version 2.1.7. Choose it if you want to stay within the VisualBoyAdvance lineage or if you have a reason to prefer its interface. Neither project publishes a head-to-head comparison with mGBA, so the decision between the two is a matter of preference and of which features you need.

RetroArch with the mGBA core
RetroArch is a multi-system frontend, and the Libretro documentation describes an mGBA core that runs GBA games inside it. This suits readers who already manage their libraries in RetroArch and do not want a separate program. The trade-off is that mGBA’s own FAQ warns the libretro core may lag behind standalone mGBA or carry issues that have been fixed upstream. If you need the most current mGBA behavior, use the standalone build.

- Open the official mGBA downloads page and choose either the Windows installer or the portable archive. The installer suits a regular install; the portable archive suits a folder you can move or run from removable storage.
- Pick the 64-bit build for 64-bit Windows and the 32-bit build only if your system is 32-bit.
- Install the program, or extract the portable archive into a folder you can write to.
- Store your game files in a writable location such as your Documents folder or a folder you create on another drive. Do not keep them under Program Files, even if the emulator itself is installed there.
- Open mGBA, load your game from the emulator’s open-file option, and confirm it starts.
- Open the emulator’s settings to review the controls. The README documents default keyboard mappings. A USB gamepad is optional, but if you use one, the emulator should map many controllers automatically; adjust them if not.
- Save in-game, close the emulator, reopen it, and confirm the save persists.
Troubleshooting saves and common limits
- Saves do not persist: The official FAQ advises checking that the ROM sits in a writable location, not under Program Files. Move the game file to a writable folder and test again.
- Link cable play: Support is partial and covers same-computer local links only. The FAQ names the Wireless Adapter and IR Adapter as unsupported, so do not assume any accessory will work.
- Missing shaders or advanced rendering: Check your OpenGL version. Shaders and advanced features need OpenGL 3.2 or newer; the baseline is OpenGL 1.1.
- A specific game misbehaves: Check the known-bug list in the official FAQ before changing settings or reinstalling.
How much weight the evidence can carry
The recommendation rests on the official mGBA download page, FAQ, and GitHub README, along with VBA-M’s official site and Libretro’s documentation. The exact project sentence from the README is “mGBA is an emulator for running Game Boy Advance games.” No independent statistics on compatibility percentages were available from these sources, so this guide does not quote any. Treat the compatibility statements as the projects’ own claims.
A generic Windows-compatible USB gamepad is an optional convenience. No specific model is required, and the official documentation supports gamepad use in general rather than endorsing any product.
