Best Games Like Mario Kart World for Multiplayer Racing

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the closest conventional multiplayer kart-racing alternative here: Nintendo lists local split-screen and online races, with the Switch version supported on Switch 2. For a broader mix of vehicle-based modes on Switch 2, consider Kirby Air Riders; for an older kart racer on Switch with same-system multiplayer, consider Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. The right pick depends on your console, how your group connects, and whether you want kart racing specifically or a wider vehicle-action game.

Mario Kart World is the comparison point because it combines one-system play for up to four people, local wireless for up to eight, and online play for up to 24 on Nintendo Switch 2. Its modes include Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle, and Free Roam, set in what Nintendo describes as an interconnected world. The alternatives below do not reproduce that exact package, so compare the mode and connection your group actually plans to use—not just the biggest player number on a product page.

How these games compare for multiplayer

The player limits below come from Nintendo product, support, or announcement information. “Same-system” means players share one console; local wireless connects nearby systems; online play uses an internet connection. A lobby’s capacity is not necessarily the number of players in one race. Player limits are mode-specific in some cases, so read the qualification in the table rather than treating every number as an all-modes guarantee.

Reading the player limits correctly

For a household playing on one television, the same-system column is the most immediately useful: each of the three alternatives lists up to four players on one system. That is also Mario Kart World’s one-system limit. These figures tell you the listed maximum, not how many controllers are included with a console or game, whether a preferred mode supports the full maximum, or whether your group needs extra systems.

Local wireless is a separate setup. It means players use nearby systems rather than sharing one console in split-screen. Mario Kart World and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds list local wireless for up to eight; Kirby Air Riders supports local wireless and specifically lists up to eight in a City Trial match. The cited Nintendo listing for Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled does not give a local-wireless limit. Do not infer support from its four-player same-system maximum or eight-player online maximum.

Online figures also need context. Mario Kart World lists up to 24 online players, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds up to 12, and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled up to eight. Kirby Air Riders lists an online Paddock gathering of up to 32, but that figure describes the gathering space, not 32 racers in a single contest. If the number of participants matters, check the exact mode and current platform listing before you organize a session.

Which game is the closest fit for Mario Kart World?

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds: conventional kart racing across local and online play

Choose this if you want another character-driven kart racer with both split-screen and online competition. Nintendo’s listing describes local split-screen in Grand Prix and Race Park, and online World Match for up to 12 players. It separately lists one to four players on one system, two to eight in local wireless, and two to 12 online. Those distinctions can help you narrow down the right setup: a few people sharing a console can use the one-system option, while a larger nearby group should look at local wireless, and remote friends should check the online mode details.

Nintendo identifies SEGA as publisher and gives September 25, 2025 as the Nintendo Switch release date. The product listing includes 23 Sonic characters, 24 tracks, 15 CrossWorlds, and customization using 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets. Those concrete counts are useful when comparing the listed scope of the game, but they do not tell you which characters or configurations your group will prefer, nor do they establish quality or balance against Mario Kart World.

Check the exact edition before purchasing. Nintendo says the Switch version is supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch, and separately lists its multiplayer counts. That compatibility note is not a reason to assume that every edition, mode, accessory, or feature behaves identically across systems. Confirm the platform label and the mode you plan to play on the product listing for your region. If you are buying a physical copy, check that the package is the Switch edition you intended; if buying digitally, check the platform and compatibility details shown at checkout.

Kirby Air Riders: more varied vehicle-action formats on Switch 2

Kirby Air Riders is a better fit for a group interested in several kinds of vehicle-based matches than for someone seeking a direct kart-racing substitute. Nintendo names Air Ride, Top Ride, and City Trial among its multiplayer options. The mode variety is the reason to consider it: rather than selecting it solely because its online Paddock has a high capacity, decide whether those different formats match what your group wants to play.

Nintendo lists up to four players on one system and supports local wireless. Its specific local-wireless figure is up to eight players in a City Trial match. That qualification matters: the eight-player figure is attached to City Trial, so it should not be generalized to every mode. Online, the Paddock can hold a gathering of up to 32. A Paddock is a lobby or meeting space, not a single race with 32 participants; check the format and participant limit for the contest you want rather than reading the gathering capacity as race capacity.

Best fit: a Switch 2 group that welcomes vehicular action and multiple match formats, including a sizeable online gathering area. If your requirement is a conventional kart racer with a clearly stated online race count, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the more direct fit in this comparison. Kirby Air Riders belongs on the shortlist for variety, not because the Paddock number means it offers the largest single race.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled: an older Switch kart-racing option

This is worth considering if your group uses Nintendo Switch and wants same-console kart racing. Nintendo identifies Activision as publisher and June 21, 2019 as the Switch release date. Its listing gives one-system play for up to four and online play for up to eight, making it an established alternative for a household that wants local multiplayer without moving to a Switch 2-only game.

The listed online maximum is lower than Mario Kart World’s 24 and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ 12. The Nintendo listing cited here does not specify local wireless, so do not assume that feature is available from the same-system and online figures alone. Check current online availability and service requirements before purchase, especially if online play is the main reason you are considering an older release. A listed feature count by itself does not confirm present-day service status in your region.

Best fit: Switch owners looking for another conventional kart racer with up to four players sharing one system. If your group needs nearby multi-console play, confirm local wireless support directly for the edition and mode before deciding; it is not specified in the cited listing.

Choose by console, group size, and connection

  1. Start with the console. Mario Kart World and Kirby Air Riders are Nintendo Switch 2 games. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has a Nintendo Switch listing that Nintendo says is supported on Switch 2; verify the edition and its compatibility information. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is listed for Nintendo Switch. If you already own a game, check whether the platform you plan to play on is the one supported by that copy before inviting others.
  2. Decide whether everyone shares one system. For a group on one console, all three alternatives list up to four players on one system. If you have more than four people, the same-system limit will not cover the whole group. Look next at a game’s local-wireless or online option instead of assuming that the one-console player count carries over to other modes.
  3. Choose the connection method. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds lists local wireless and online play, as well as split-screen. Kirby Air Riders supports local wireless and online Paddock gatherings, but its 32-person gathering capacity is not a single race size. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled lists online play; local wireless is not specified in the cited listing. Match the game to where your players are and how many systems they can use.
  4. Pick the style of game. For conventional kart racing, start with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds or Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. For multiple vehicle-action formats on Switch 2, look at Kirby Air Riders. Mario Kart World itself has Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle, and Free Roam in an interconnected world, so if those specific modes or that world structure are what your group values, the alternatives should be treated as options with different feature sets, not one-for-one replacements.
  5. Confirm online prerequisites. Nintendo’s current Mario Kart World multiplayer-page terms say online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check Nintendo’s current service requirements for the game and region you will use; do not assume that terms remain unchanged or that the same listing covers every title and mode.
  6. Check the edition and current availability. Verify platform, mode support, and current online conditions on the product page before checkout. Game availability and service terms can change. If buying for a group, confirm that each person’s system and copy can use the intended multiplayer method.
  7. Set a budget using current prices. No current retail prices or stock levels are established here, so compare the live retailer price for the exact platform and edition rather than relying on an old listing or assuming the games cost the same. Also account for any additional controllers or systems your chosen setup requires; the player limit does not mean the hardware is included.

What to check before setting up multiplayer

Playing together on one console

Nintendo says extra controllers are needed for Mario Kart World beyond the two Joy-Con 2 controllers included with the Switch 2 system. That is a practical hardware check for a four-player same-system plan: the product’s up-to-four limit does not mean the system bundle already supplies enough controllers for all four people. Check controller requirements for your selected game, count how many people are joining, and make sure you have the necessary controllers before the session starts.

Do not turn that Mario Kart World controller note into a claim about controller support for the other games. The relevant listings establish their player counts but do not give a full controller inventory for your household. Check the platform and game guidance for the controls your setup will use. A second console is not required simply because a game lists local wireless; that is a different connection arrangement from one-system split-screen and should be planned separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Playing nearby over local wireless

Local wireless is different from split-screen on one system: players use nearby systems rather than sharing a single console. Compare the local-wireless limit for the specific game and mode you want. Mario Kart World lists up to eight local-wireless players, as does Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Kirby Air Riders supports local wireless and lists up to eight in a City Trial match, while the cited Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled listing does not state a local-wireless count.

For a nearby group, first decide how many players will be on each system and which title’s local-wireless mode you intend to use. Then verify the player limit and mode for that setup. Avoid applying a same-system maximum to a wireless session, or applying a City Trial figure to all Kirby Air Riders formats. These are different ways of connecting, and their limits should be checked separately.

Playing online

Online player counts are maximums in the cited listings, not a promise that every mode supports that number or that a particular session will fill. For Mario Kart World, Nintendo’s current multiplayer terms specify internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features. Check current requirements for the title, system, and region before scheduling play. For the other titles, use their current platform listings and service information rather than treating the Mario Kart World terms as a universal statement about all games.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Kirby Air Riders makes the distinction between lobby and race capacity especially important: the Paddock accommodates a gathering of up to 32, but that does not mean 32 players race at once. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds lists online World Match for up to 12. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled lists online play for up to eight. Mario Kart World lists up to 24 online. Those maximums help identify which games may fit a planned group on paper, but do not establish how many people will be available or which modes can use the maximum at any given time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the player counts do—and do not—tell you

The numbers make it possible to match a game to a planned group, but they do not show whether matchmaking is active, how responsive controls feel, how well a game runs in a particular setup, or which title a group will enjoy most. No independent comparative test figures are established here. Treat the listed specifications as a practical starting point, then confirm the current mode and platform details for the edition you are considering.

Likewise, a large character or equipment count is not a direct measure of how much your group will enjoy a game. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds lists 23 characters, 24 tracks, 15 CrossWorlds, 45 vehicles, and 70 gadgets. Those counts can help readers understand the breadth Nintendo describes on its product page, but they do not establish the quality, balance, or depth of each option. Kirby Air Riders’ three named modes point to a different kind of variety, while Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled’s listing is more useful for its stated four-player same-system and eight-player online limits.

Mario Kart World’s distinguishing structure, as described in Nintendo’s 2025 launch announcement, is an interconnected world alongside Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle, and Free Roam. Nintendo described it as “an interconnected world where you can drive virtually anywhere.” That is Nintendo’s description of the game, not an independent comparative assessment. Among the alternatives covered here, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the straightforward option when the priority is split-screen and online kart competition; Kirby Air Riders suits a group seeking different vehicle-action formats on Switch 2; and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled gives Switch owners another same-system kart-racing choice.

Buying and planning checklist

Before buying or setting up a multiplayer session, use this short checklist to avoid the most common mismatches:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Platform: verify that the game edition matches the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 system you will use. CrossWorlds’ Nintendo Switch version is listed as supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch; check the exact edition rather than assuming all listings are interchangeable.
  • Players per connection type: separate one-system, local-wireless, and online counts. A four-player shared-console limit does not answer how many nearby systems can connect, and an online maximum does not guarantee the same count in every mode.
  • Mode: check that the advertised maximum applies to the mode you want. Kirby Air Riders’ eight-player local-wireless figure is for City Trial; its 32-person Paddock is a gathering space, not a race.
  • Controllers and systems: plan the equipment for your group. Mario Kart World requires extra controllers beyond the two Joy-Con 2 included with Switch 2 for more than two people on one system. Player limits do not include a guarantee of extra controllers.
  • Online access: check current internet, account, and subscription requirements for your title and region. Nintendo’s current Mario Kart World page lists internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features.
  • Price and stock: compare current retailer prices and availability for the exact version you want. Prices, stock, and service conditions are not fixed by the multiplayer specifications listed here.

There is no verified current price, retailer stock, tracked purchase link, or affiliate program established for these recommendations. Search for the exact game and platform—Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for Nintendo Switch, Kirby Air Riders for Nintendo Switch 2, or Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled for Nintendo Switch—and verify the seller’s current edition, region, price, and availability. The same caution applies if you are buying Mario Kart World itself: product details and online terms can change, so use the current official listing for the planned platform.

Kirby Air Riders is a broader vehicular-action game with several formats rather than a direct kart-racing substitute.

What is a good multiplayer racing game for Switch 2?

Mario Kart World and Kirby Air Riders are listed for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo also says the Nintendo Switch version of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch; check the exact edition and mode requirements. Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many players can race online?

Nintendo lists up to 24 online players for Mario Kart World, up to 12 for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds World Match, and up to eight for Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. Kirby Air Riders lists a Paddock gathering of up to 32, but that is a lobby capacity—not a claim that 32 players race in one contest. Check the current listing for the exact mode.

Can four people play these games on one console?

The Nintendo listings give up to four players on one system for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Kirby Air Riders, and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled; Mario Kart World also lists up to four. For Mario Kart World, Nintendo says extra controllers are needed beyond the two Joy-Con 2 controllers included with Switch 2. Check your controller setup for the game you choose.

Is Kirby Air Riders’ 32-player Paddock a 32-player race?

No. Nintendo describes the Paddock as an online gathering space with capacity for up to 32. That number should not be interpreted as the player limit for a single race. The same listing separately states up to eight players in a City Trial local-wireless match.

Does Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled support local wireless on Switch?

The cited Nintendo product listing specifies up to four players on one system and up to eight online, but does not state a local-wireless count. Check the current listing for the specific edition and mode before relying on nearby multi-console play.

What do I need to play Mario Kart World online?

Nintendo’s current Mario Kart World multiplayer-page terms list internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features. Verify the current requirements for your region and setup before arranging play, since online terms can change.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds if you want another conventional kart racer with local split-screen and online World Match. Choose Kirby Air Riders for Switch 2 if your group wants multiple vehicle-action modes and understands that its 32-person Paddock is a lobby, not a 32-player race. Consider Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled if you want an established Switch kart racer with up to four players on one system. Before buying, verify the edition, current service requirements, mode-specific player limit, price, and any extra controllers your group needs.
