The best game to try depends on which part of GoldenEye 007 you miss: flexible objectives, stealth, classic first-person shooting, or Bond-style espionage. For mission freedom, start with Deus Ex; for sneaking, try Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. Neither is a direct remake of GoldenEye’s formula, but each recaptures a different part of its appeal.
Choose a game by the GoldenEye quality you want back
| Game | Best match | Why it may scratch the itch | Main difference | PC availability note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deus Ex | Mission flexibility and stealth-or-shoot choice | Its missions allow different approaches, making it a good fit if you liked deciding how to handle objectives and guarded spaces. | It is an immersive sim, not a Bond shooter; its appeal is open-ended problem-solving rather than identical gunplay. | Listed in GOG’s stealth and FPS catalogues. Check the individual listing for current availability and system requirements: GOG stealth catalogue and GOG FPS catalogue. |
| Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell | Spy stealth | Pick it if the memorable part was slipping through guarded areas and avoiding detection. | It is much more focused on stealth than GoldenEye’s mix of sneaking and direct shooting. | Listed in GOG’s stealth catalogue; check its title page for current availability and requirements: GOG stealth catalogue. |
| XIII | Stylized shooter feel | A distinctive visual style gives this PC shooter a different kind of personality from conventional military campaigns. | It is a stylistic alternative, not a close mechanical match for GoldenEye’s objectives or spy-shooter balance. | Listed in GOG’s stealth catalogue. Confirm the specific listing and requirements before buying: GOG stealth catalogue. |
| Return to Castle Wolfenstein | Classic first-person campaign pacing | Choose it if you mainly want older-school first-person campaign action. | Its setting and mission design differ from GoldenEye’s espionage objectives. | Listed in GOG’s FPS catalogue; the catalogue is not a per-game compatibility report: GOG FPS catalogue. |
| Far Cry | Classic first-person campaign action | Another option when first-person shooting and campaign progression matter more than the Bond setting. | Its setting and approach to missions are not GoldenEye’s. | Listed in GOG’s FPS catalogue. Check the current individual listing for operating-system support and requirements: GOG FPS catalogue. |
| 007 First Light | Modern Bond and espionage flavor | Its Steam listing uses espionage, stealth, and shooter descriptors, making it the clearest option here for a current Bond-themed experience. | It is described as an action-adventure/third-person shooter experience, not a classic first-person objective shooter. | Steam lists a May 26, 2026 release date. Check the listing for current availability, region, and system requirements: Steam 007 First Light listing. |
What “like GoldenEye” can mean
Players asking what FPS games “capture the same magic” may be looking for different things; that phrasing appears in community discussion, not as a survey finding (community discussion). GoldenEye blends first-person action, objective-led missions, stealth options, exploration, and a spy setting. The recommendations above separate those qualities rather than treating “similar” as a claim that any one game reproduces the whole experience.

PC access: storefront games, Perfect Dark, and the original
Check each storefront listing before you buy
The GOG links above are category pages, not guarantees of a particular game’s present availability, operating-system support, or compatibility. Store catalogues and requirements can change, so verify the individual title page, region, and input details. The Steam listing is the relevant place to check the current status and requirements for 007 First Light. None of these catalogue references establishes multiplayer features; consult the game’s own current listing if multiplayer matters to you.
Perfect Dark is a comparison, not a native-PC pick from the cited listing
Perfect Dark is an obvious historical point of comparison, but the cited official Xbox page lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming—not a native PC edition. Treat that listing as Xbox-focused rather than evidence of a PC recommendation: Xbox Perfect Dark listing.

A community PC port of GoldenEye exists, with important caveats
The GoldenEye 007 PC Port project describes its work as “GoldenEye 007 (Nintendo 64, 1997) on the PC — decompiled, ported, and playable at 60 fps.” That is the project README’s description, not an independent performance test or an official commercial release. Its v0.4.0 release, dated September 28, 2026, is pre-1.0. The project says the complete single-player campaign is playable on Windows and Linux, including Steam Deck, and documents keyboard/mouse and controller input. It also warns: “This is a pre-1.0 release, not a finished product.” You must supply a compatible NTSC-U ROM; the project does not distribute the ROM or game assets. See the GoldenEye 007 PC Port project documentation for its instructions and current release details.
