For comparing a redesigned site with its previous version, the best choice depends on whether you need to capture pages, run code-owned visual regression tests, or manage review across a team. ScreenshotNeo is the first API to try when you want controlled full-page captures; Playwright Test fits teams that want screenshot baselines inside their browser tests; Applitools describes a managed visual-testing workflow with cloud execution and review context. These products serve different needs, and the available product documentation does not establish an independent head-to-head winner.
What makes a redesign screenshot comparison useful?
A screenshot by itself is only a capture. A dependable redesign review also needs the old and new pages rendered in comparable conditions, a baseline to compare against, a way to limit noise from changing content, and a process for inspecting and accepting differences.

For a fair comparison, keep the viewport width and browser environment consistent, capture the same page state, and make sure long-page content has actually loaded. A layout captured at one width can differ substantially from the same page at another because responsive breakpoints may change navigation, columns, and sidebars.
- Capture: Does the tool capture the full page, and can it trigger lazy-loaded content?
- Repeatability: Can you control viewport, browser, waits, and motion?
- Comparison: Does it maintain reference images and detect differences, or does it only return an image?
- Review: Does the workflow give your team the context and process needed to inspect and approve changes?
Which tool fits each redesign workflow?
| Tool | Best fit | What its documented workflow covers | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | API-based, repeatable captures, including full-page images | Capture controls, full-page screenshots, and options for waiting, viewport, and page handling; it also provides an MCP server for AI agents. | It is a capture API, not a complete baseline-approval workflow. Store and compare the returned captures in your own process. |
| Playwright Test | Teams that want visual checks inside their browser test suite | toHaveScreenshot() creates reference screenshots and compares later runs; options include difference thresholds and stylesheets for filtering volatile elements. |
Your team operates the test environment and snapshot workflow. Keep baseline and later runs in a consistent environment. |
| Applitools | Teams seeking a managed visual-testing and review workflow | Its product overview describes full-page or component checks, cloud-parallel execution, integrations with common browser and app testing frameworks, logs and video, and handling for dynamic content. | These are vendor-described capabilities, not the results of an independent comparative test. Confirm that the workflow and plan suit your team. |

1. ScreenshotNeo: start with an API when capture is the main job
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For redesign work, its full-page capture and capture controls can help produce consistent images from URLs; the result still needs to be paired with a baseline and review process if you want visual regression testing rather than capture alone.
For long pages, check the captured output rather than assuming every below-the-fold element loaded. Lazy-loaded images and sections may need scrolling or a deliberate wait. Keep the viewport fixed between old and new captures, and use the same capture settings for both.
Use when
- You need URL-based captures that can be invoked from an application or automation.
- You want adjustable waits, viewport settings, or other capture controls.
- You want an MCP server option for AI-agent workflows.
Not a replacement for
A baseline store, pixel-difference policy, approval queue, or team review process. Those are comparison and maintenance responsibilities to plan for separately.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
2. Playwright Test: keep visual checks with your browser tests
Playwright Test documents toHaveScreenshot() for generating a reference screenshot on first use and comparing later runs against it. The documented comparison uses pixelmatch, and maxDiffPixels can set a difference tolerance. Reference snapshots can be refreshed with --update-snapshots. This route makes sense when your team owns the application or can automate access to it and wants visual checks alongside its existing tests. Playwright screenshot assertions documentation
Example test
This example assumes Playwright Test is installed and the test can reach the target page. It writes or checks a full-page reference screenshot; the first run establishes the baseline, which should be reviewed before treating it as approved.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png', {
fullPage: true,
maxDiffPixels: 100,
});
});
When page content changes unpredictably, Playwright documents applying a stylesheet during screenshot capture to hide or stabilize volatile elements. Use this selectively: hiding too much can mask a real redesign regression.

Rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Playwright recommends generating later screenshots in the same environment as the baseline where possible. For continuous integration, pin the browser/runtime environment and avoid approving new baselines automatically without review. Playwright screenshot assertions documentation
3. ScreenshotOne: API capture with a section mode for difficult long pages
ScreenshotOne documents full_page=true, which also enables scrolling by default to request lazy-loaded images. Its default full-page approach asks the browser to render the page at full height; the by_sections mode scrolls through sections and stitches captures. A shorter scroll step or longer delay may help trigger lazy content, but increases capture time and does not guarantee every element will load. The vendor documentation warns that timing can still miss elements. ScreenshotOne full-page screenshot guide
ScreenshotOne also documents controls for motion reduction and waiting. Its guide notes that viewport width affects responsive layout, so keep widths matched when comparing versions. It is a capture-oriented API option; the capture alone is not a complete baseline and approval system.

4. Applitools: consider a managed visual-testing and review workflow
Applitools’ web-testing overview describes checks for full pages or components, cloud-parallel execution, integration with Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, and Appium, logs and video, cross-browser rendering, and grouped baseline updates. It also describes handling dynamic content such as timestamps, session IDs, and A/B content. These are capabilities described by the vendor; they are not independent comparative findings. How to make before-and-after captures comparable
- Choose the page and state. Use the same URL path, account state, consent state, and interaction state for the old and redesigned versions. If a page requires login, ensure both runs use equivalent access.
- Fix the viewport. Record the width and height and reuse them. Repeat at each important responsive breakpoint instead of comparing different widths.
- Control the environment. For browser-test baselines, use the same browser version and operating environment across baseline and current runs when possible.
- Wait for meaningful readiness. Wait for a key selector or known content to appear; use a deliberate delay only when necessary. A page-load event alone may not mean that images or dynamic sections have finished.
- Handle motion and changing data deliberately. Reduce animation or mask known volatile fields only where appropriate, and preserve enough page content to catch real design changes.
- Capture the whole page and inspect its bottom. Lazy-loaded sections may depend on scrolling. Verify that the result includes the expected content rather than trusting a full-page flag alone.
- Review differences before updating references. A new baseline can bless an unintended regression. Examine changes, then update snapshots or approve a managed baseline through your team’s process.
Long pages, dynamic content, and false differences
Lazy-loaded images or sections are missing
Some pages load content only after scrolling. Use a capture workflow that scrolls or captures by sections, and tune scroll increments or delay if available. Check the final image for missing sections; extra waiting can improve completeness but increases runtime and does not guarantee all elements trigger.

Differences are caused by dates, IDs, or experiments
For test-owned captures, filter known volatile elements with a screenshot stylesheet. A managed visual-testing product may offer dynamic-content handling; Applitools describes support for timestamps, session IDs, and A/B content. Do not suppress broad areas of the page, because that can hide actual redesign defects.
The same page looks different between runs
Check viewport, browser version, OS, headless mode, and timing before changing a threshold. Playwright specifically notes these environmental factors can change rendering. Stabilize the environment first, then set tolerances appropriate to the remaining expected variation.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Capture time: Full-page screenshots and section-by-section scrolling take longer than a viewport capture. Longer waits and smaller scroll steps may improve lazy-load coverage while increasing latency.
- Reliability: Repeatability depends on matching viewport, browser environment, page state, and readiness conditions. A capture service can simplify image acquisition, but does not by itself make page content deterministic.
- Review effort: A tall image can be difficult to inspect at a useful scale. Consider whether your chosen comparison workflow makes it practical to locate and evaluate differences.
- Cost: Current prices and limits for the tools compared here are not established in the cited documentation. Check vendor pricing and usage terms for your expected page volume, browser coverage, and parallel runs before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot tool automatically compare a redesign with the original?
No. Some tools only capture images; baseline storage, difference detection, and review may require a separate test or visual-testing workflow.
Should I compare only one desktop screenshot?
No. Capture at matching widths for the responsive layouts that matter, since breakpoints can change the page structure.
