Windows 11’s built-in Windows Update is the best place to start: it installs recommended drivers and lets you choose optional ones. For hardware Windows Update does not cover, use the device maker’s official tool or download page. There is not enough verified information to recommend a ranked list of 23 general-purpose free updaters, and some products advertised as free are trials or have paid features.
Which driver updater should you use?
Choose the route that matches the hardware, rather than installing a utility that claims to update every component in your PC. Windows Update covers the ordinary case; Intel and AMD provide tools for supported products from their respective brands.

No independent head-to-head test establishes that one of these tools is safest, fastest, or improves gaming performance. Avoid choosing on advertised database size or “performance boost” claims alone. Microsoft recommends Windows Update and warns users to avoid driver downloads from sites other than the manufacturer’s official site (Windows driver updates; Device Manager guidance).
Update drivers through Windows Update
Recommended drivers are delivered through Windows Update. Optional driver updates are not installed automatically, so check them when troubleshooting a device or when you specifically need an available update.

- Expand the driver updates section and select only the updates you want to install.
- Choose the install option shown in Windows, then restart if prompted or when installation finishes.
Microsoft calls Windows Update the best way to get driver updates in Windows. The exact updates offered depend on the PC and its devices; an empty optional-updates list does not mean Windows has found every vendor-specific driver.
Use the hardware maker’s updater when needed
Intel Driver & Support Assistant
Intel DSA scans for Intel driver and software updates and displays system and device information. Intel says the application is free, but some Intel products are unsupported and DSA shows only part of the Intel Download Center catalog. If your product is not covered, check Intel’s Download Center and product compatibility information (Intel DSA support).
Intel’s support article, last reviewed July 7, 2025, estimates approximately three to six minutes for typical installation, loading, and analysis on broadband. That is Intel’s estimate, not an independent speed comparison. Intel also says DSA collects system and device information.

AMD Auto-Detect and Install
AMD’s tool is intended for supported Radeon graphics and Ryzen chipsets on Windows 10/11 64-bit, version 1809 and later. Use it for eligible AMD components, not as a replacement for updating other manufacturers’ devices. Check AMD’s driver page for the current download and applicability details (AMD drivers and auto-detect tool).
When a third-party updater may—and may not—help
Third-party tools may offer scanning, downloads, or installation features, but their free terms differ. IObit markets Driver Booster in free and PRO versions, while Driver Easy’s site describes automatic download and installation as a PRO feature and offers a trial. AVG advertises a 15-day trial. Those offers are not equivalent to an ongoing free updater; review the current terms and feature gates before installing (IObit Driver Booster; Driver Easy; AVG Driver Updater).
IObit advertises Windows 11 compatibility, device coverage, WHQL/security checks, and restore-point support for Driver Booster. These are vendor claims, not independently verified results; the available information does not establish how much functionality remains free or verify matching accuracy, rollback behavior, or performance effects. Do not let an updater install a large batch of drivers without reviewing what it proposes and knowing how to recover if a device stops working.

An IObit-authored roundup describes Snappy Driver Installer Origin as an offline option that uses downloadable driver packs, but that description does not verify the project’s current state or official download source. Offline packs may suit a machine with limited connectivity; a USB drive is not needed for ordinary online updating (IObit’s SDIO roundup, September 20, 2026).

If Windows Update does not find the compatible driver, Microsoft recommends going to the hardware maker’s official website. Match the download to the exact device or PC model and your Windows version and system architecture. Microsoft’s Device Manager instructions describe updating, manually installing, reinstalling, and rolling back drivers. They explicitly advise: “Avoid downloading drivers from any websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.”
- Identify the device in Device Manager or confirm the computer model from its manufacturer.
- Open the manufacturer’s official support or download page and locate the package for that exact device and Windows configuration.
- Follow the manufacturer’s installation directions. If the package is an installer, run it as directed; if it contains driver files for manual installation, use Device Manager’s update-driver workflow and point Windows to the downloaded package.
- Restart when requested, then check whether the device works as expected.
Recover if an update causes a problem
If a device began failing after a recent driver update, Device Manager may offer Roll Back Driver. Microsoft says rolling back often resolves issues that began after Windows Update. Open Device Manager, locate the affected device, open its properties, choose the Driver tab, then select Roll Back Driver if available. If the option is unavailable, use the device maker’s support instructions to reinstall a compatible driver rather than downloading one from an unofficial site (Microsoft Device Manager guidance).

Why this is not a verified list of 23 tools
A third-party directory lists 23 “game driver updaters,” mixing free, freemium, and paid products. That gaming-specific collection does not establish a vetted list of 23 general-purpose Windows 11 driver updaters or verify each product’s current free features. It is not a sound basis for ranking tools for all PC drivers (iTechGuides directory, September 2026).
For most Windows 11 users, Windows Update and the relevant hardware maker’s official tool or download page are the substantiated choices. Treat paid trials and third-party free editions as separate offers, and verify their current terms rather than assuming that “free” means unrestricted ongoing driver installation.
