The best free VTuber software depends first on your avatar format: use VTube Studio to animate a Live2D Cubism model, or create a 3D avatar in VRoid Studio and pair its VRM export with a compatible tracker such as VSeeFace. Use OBS Studio to compose scenes and send the finished stream to your platform. These apps do different jobs, so the right choice is usually a workflow rather than one all-in-one program.
Which free VTuber software should you choose?
| Your starting point | Free-first workflow | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|
| You already have a Live2D Cubism model | VTube Studio → OBS Studio | VTube Studio is for Live2D, not VRM/VRoid, and some features are limited in its free version. |
| You want to make a 3D avatar | VRoid Studio → VRM-compatible tracker such as VSeeFace → OBS Studio | Avatar creation, tracking, and broadcasting are separate jobs; check current operating-system and model compatibility. |
| You only need scenes, capture, and streaming | OBS Studio | OBS does not create or animate a VTuber model. |
This is a role-based guide, not a performance ranking. The product documentation and comparison reviewed do not establish controlled results for ease of use, tracking accuracy, or performance.
Understand the three jobs in a VTuber setup
Create the avatar
VRoid Studio is a free tool for creating and customizing 3D characters, including their features and textures. It can export VRM models for use in compatible tracking software. Creating a character is distinct from animating it: VRoid Studio is not the tracker or broadcast application.
Track and animate the model
A tracking application reads movement from a camera or supported device and applies it to the avatar. VTube Studio supports Live2D Cubism models and can use a webcam or smartphone. It does not load VRM or VRoid models. For a VRM workflow, VSeeFace is described as a free tracking option by a current software comparison; verify its current OS and model compatibility before installing it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compose and broadcast
OBS Studio captures and mixes sources into scenes, then records or streams the result. Sources can include application windows, images, text, webcams or capture devices, and games. OBS supports Windows, macOS, and Linux and is free and open source.
Set up a Live2D Cubism model with VTube Studio and OBS
- Prepare the model. Use a Live2D Cubism model. VTube Studio does not support VRM/VRoid models; do not try to use a VRoid export in this workflow.
- Choose a tracking device. VTube Studio can use a compatible smartphone or webcam. If using a webcam, its requirements documentation says 1280×720 or higher generally works best for eye and blink tracking. The documentation describes 15–30 FPS as sufficient for good tracking. A webcam purchase is optional if you can use a supported phone.
- Open the model in VTube Studio. Configure the chosen tracking input and check that the model responds as expected before opening OBS. The precise controls and platform feature limits can change, so consult the current VTube Studio documentation and listing.
- Build an OBS scene. Follow OBS’s Quick Start Guide: run the Auto-Configuration Wizard, add the sources you need, check your audio input, and test settings before going live. Add the VTube Studio view as a source using the capture method available on your system, then arrange it with your game, background, overlays, and other content.
- Test privately or record first. Confirm that the avatar is visible, audio is audible and balanced, and the scene layout is correct before starting a public stream. OBS recommends testing settings before a live broadcast.
Set up a 3D avatar with VRoid Studio and a VRM tracker
- Create the avatar in VRoid Studio. Customize the 3D character and export it as a VRM model. The app itself is free to use.
- Select a tracker that accepts VRM. A tracker is needed to animate the exported model. VSeeFace is identified as a free option for this workflow in a current comparison. Check the tracker’s current compatibility and setup guidance rather than assuming every VRM app or platform behaves the same way.
- Test tracking before broadcast setup. Load the model into the compatible tracker, select the available tracking input, and verify that movement is being applied before adding it to OBS.
- Build and test the OBS scene. Add the tracker’s output to an OBS scene, then add any game, microphone, camera, image, or text sources you need. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, check audio inputs, and test the scene before going live.
VRoid Studio being free does not settle the rights or price of every downloadable model asset, exported model, clothing item, or prop. Check the terms that apply to each third-party asset you use.

Do you need OBS to stream with a VTuber model?
No single tracker and broadcast arrangement is required by this guide, but OBS is useful when you need to combine the avatar with a game, camera, microphone, graphics, or other sources. OBS is the broadcast and recording layer; it does not create or animate the avatar. Its official help portal says OBS is free for any use under GPLv2, with no watermark or feature limitations. See the OBS Project homepage and quick-start guide.
What “free” includes—and what it may not
- OBS Studio: The OBS help portal describes it as free to use for any reason under GPLv2, without watermarks or feature limitations.
- VRoid Studio: Its official page describes the software as free to use; separate asset and usage terms may apply to individual clothing, props, or other third-party material.
- VTube Studio: It is available as a free demo, but free and PRO features differ. Its FAQ and Steam listing identify limitations, including features such as phone-to-PC streaming for longer than five minutes and removing the app logo being PRO features. Check the current VTube Studio documentation and Steam listing for exact current limits, platform availability, and pricing.
- Hardware and assets: A compatible phone or webcam, a model, or third-party assets may add costs or terms depending on what you choose. The documented webcam guidance is a specification, not a recommendation for a particular product.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
VTube Studio will not load my VRoid model
That is a format mismatch: VTube Studio supports Live2D Cubism, not VRM/VRoid. Use a tracker that accepts VRM for a VRoid export.

My avatar is not responding to tracking
Confirm the tracker is using the intended webcam or phone input and that the model is open in the tracker. For VTube Studio webcam eye and blink tracking, its documentation recommends 1280×720 or higher and says 15–30 FPS is sufficient for good tracking. If using another tracker, consult its current requirements.
The avatar works in its app but is missing in OBS
Check that the correct tracker output or window has been added as a source in the active OBS scene, and that the source is visible and not obscured by another layer. Confirm the scene you tested is the scene being streamed.

Or let it run in the cloud
For a VTuber setup that uses OBS and a camera-tracked live avatar, OBS remains the relevant broadcasting tool. If your goal instead is keeping an uploaded-video YouTube stream running 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream a live camera feed.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on while the cloud stream runs.
- Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, without quality tiers or re-encoding.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
