Best Free VPN Apps in 2026 (And Some to Avoid)

Proton VPN is a strong starting point if you want a free VPN without a monthly data cap. Its free plan has no data or time limit, but that does not mean unlimited server choice, guaranteed streaming access, or consistently fast connections. Windscribe is a useful alternative if its monthly allowance suits you and you want access to more locations and unlimited device connections.

Free VPN plans make trade-offs. Compare the current limits against what you actually need, and treat privacy and security statements as provider claims unless independent evidence supports them. A VPN can change the route your internet traffic takes; it does not make you anonymous or replace secure passwords and account protections.

Which free VPN should you choose in 2026?

For a general-purpose free plan where avoiding a monthly data ceiling matters, start with Proton VPN. If you prefer more stated location choice and the ability to connect many devices, consider Windscribe, accepting its monthly data limit. PrivadoVPN is another candidate identified by TechRadar’s 2026 comparison, while hide.me is worth checking if its current location limits fit your needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are candidates, not a universal ranking: independent roundups use their own criteria, and provider plan details can change. Use the provider’s current plan page to confirm availability and limits where you live before installing.

Free VPN plans compared

VPN Monthly data Locations and devices Streaming or P2P Privacy evidence and caveats
Proton VPN Free No data or time limit, according to Proton VPN’s free plan page. Free servers are automatically assigned; the cited free-plan information does not establish a fixed number of locations or a precise device limit. Streaming access is not guaranteed on the free plan. Proton says streaming is guaranteed on paid plans. Proton says its free plan uses the same encryption and no-logs policy as paid plans. The provider warns that free servers may be busy and speeds can be affected. These are provider statements, not a cross-provider independent audit comparison.
Windscribe Free 10 GB per month with a confirmed email, or 2 GB per month without, according to Windscribe’s page accessed in 2026. Access to 10 country locations and unlimited device connections, according to Windscribe’s free-plan page. The cited page does not establish a streaming guarantee or a P2P allowance for the free tier. Windscribe’s privacy and audit descriptions are claims by the provider unless checked against the underlying audit report.
PrivadoVPN Free 10 GB per month, according to PrivadoVPN’s free-plan page. The cited page describes apps for common platforms; it does not establish a comparable location count or device limit here. The available plan information does not establish streaming or P2P support or a guarantee. TechRadar names PrivadoVPN its top pick in its 2026 comparison. That ranking reflects the publication’s own criteria, not a universal verdict.
hide.me Free Not stated in the cited plan information. hide.me describes a free encrypted plan; Tom’s Guide characterizes its free server availability as limited relative to some alternatives. Check current locations and device limits on hide.me’s plan page. The cited sources do not establish streaming or P2P support or a guarantee. hide.me claims zero-log status. That claim should not be confused with independent verification.

Comparison context is available from TechRadar’s free VPN roundup, Tom’s Guide’s free VPN comparison, and Top10VPN’s free VPN comparison. Their recommendations may differ because rankings depend on testing and editorial criteria.

What to know about the leading options

Proton VPN Free: best fit when data limits are the main concern

Proton says its free plan has no data or time cap and uses the same encryption and no-logs policy as its paid plans. Its trade-off is flexibility: free servers are automatically assigned and may be busy, which can affect speed. The provider also says its free tier does not guarantee access to streaming services. See Proton VPN’s free-plan details and its streaming support page.

PrivadoVPN Free: a comparison-list candidate

hide.me Free: check location limits before relying on it

hide.me describes its free plan as encrypted and claims zero-log status. Tom’s Guide says its free server availability is limited compared with some alternatives. Since precise current location limits are not established here, verify them on the provider’s page before choosing it for a particular country or region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose a free VPN for your actual use

  1. Set your use case. Decide whether you need occasional protection on public Wi-Fi, routine browsing, many connected devices, access to a specific country, streaming, or file sharing. Those needs make different plan limits important.
  2. Check the data allowance. Proton VPN’s free tier has no monthly data cap according to the provider. Windscribe lists 10 GB monthly with a confirmed email or 2 GB without, and PrivadoVPN lists 10 GB monthly. A capped plan may be adequate for light use but restrictive for frequent video or large downloads.
  3. Check locations and device rules. A location count is not the same as being able to select any server you want. Confirm the countries available to free users, whether server choice is manual or assigned, and how many devices may connect at once.
  4. Verify the feature you need. If streaming access or P2P support is essential, look for a clear statement for the free tier, not just the service overall. Proton explicitly says streaming is not guaranteed on free and is guaranteed on paid plans.
  5. Read privacy claims precisely. Look for a clear privacy policy and determine whether claims about logging, encryption, or audits come from the provider or from independent evidence. A privacy claim is not proof that a service makes you anonymous.
  6. Recheck terms before installing. Plan limits, locations, and feature availability can change; confirm the live provider page for your geography and device before relying on a detail in a comparison.

Free VPN apps to avoid: warning signs, not unsupported accusations

The available evidence does not justify naming a particular free VPN app as malicious or claiming that most free VPNs sell user data. Instead, avoid an app when you cannot establish who operates it, how the service is funded, what its privacy policy says, or what its meaningful limits are.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home | EasyMesh, VPN Clients & Server, HomeShield, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, USB 3.0, Secure by Design - Archer AX55
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
  • No identifiable operator: the app and website do not clearly name the company responsible for the service.
  • No understandable privacy policy: the policy is missing, vague, or does not explain what data is collected and why.
  • Unclear funding: the provider does not explain how a supposedly free service is supported. Advertising or data handling can matter, but general warnings are not evidence that every free provider behaves the same way.
  • Limits are hidden: the service does not clearly disclose data caps, location choice, device restrictions, or whether key features are excluded.
  • App details do not make sense: check the publisher name, requested permissions, and whether the app comes from the provider’s official distribution channel before installing.

Does a free VPN make you anonymous?

No. A VPN routes traffic through its service and can help protect a connection in some situations, but it does not prevent websites from identifying you through accounts, cookies, browser details, or information you provide. It also moves trust to the VPN provider, which is why transparent policies and credible independent evidence matter. Keep using strong, unique passwords and multifactor authentication for important accounts.
