For a quick reputation check, start with Google Safe Browsing Site Status. To compare assessments from multiple security providers, use VirusTotal. To see what a page loads during an automated visit, try urlscan.io. They use different methods, and none can prove a link is safe.
Privacy warning: A URL may contain a password-reset token, private invitation, session identifier, or other secret. Submitting it to a scanner can disclose the address. Check the service’s submission and privacy terms before scanning sensitive links.

Google Safe Browsing Site Status: a quick reputation lookup
Google’s Transparency Report tool checks whether Google currently identifies a site as dangerous. Google says it scans sections of its web index daily for potentially compromised sites and uses statistical models to identify phishing sites. It says unsafe sites are added to its list within minutes of detection and, on average, take half an hour to appear externally. VirusTotal: aggregated provider assessments
VirusTotal accepts URL submissions through its webpage, browser extensions, and API. Its documentation says it checks submitted items with more than 70 antivirus scanners and URL/domain blocklisting services, though the available checks can vary by item and report. A URL report combines partner assessments and context, and a URL can be reanalysed. A number of detections may help flag a concern, but neither a disagreement among providers nor zero detections is a universal safety verdict. [VirusTotal Terms of Service; VirusTotal URL reports]

urlscan.io: an automated page visit
urlscan.io describes itself as a free service. When a URL is submitted, its automated process visits the address like a regular user and records activity generated by page navigation. That can help when you need to see what an address loads or does, rather than only whether it appears in reputation data. How to interpret a clean result
A scanner can report a URL already present in its threat data or identify behavior observed during its analysis. What it finds is bounded by the service’s data and method. Google says its scanners cover only what they observe; VirusTotal presents partner assessments; urlscan.io records activity from its automated navigation. - Read “no detections” as “this check did not report a known problem,” not “safe.”
- Check the registrable domain carefully for lookalike spelling or an unexpected domain.
- Do not enter credentials or payment details through a link in an unexpected message.
- Open the claimed organization’s known address or official app yourself. For work-account or payment requests, confirm through a separate trusted channel.
Protect private information before submitting a URL
A URL can reveal more than the site’s domain: its path and query parameters may contain unique tokens or other sensitive information. VirusTotal explicitly says URL submissions are shared with the submitter and examining partners. Google’s Safe Browsing Lookup API documentation says its Lookup method sends actual URLs to Google and identifies URL privacy as a drawback. - Do not paste a live password-reset link, private invitation, session URL, or other secret into a public or multi-party scanner unless you understand and accept the disclosure.
- If you can safely inspect the domain without opening the link, a domain-only check may reduce what you disclose. It may not assess the specific path or tokenized destination.
- Do not remove URL components if doing so could cause a visit or change the risk, and never open a suspicious link just to test it.
