For a free local setup, use OBS Studio: add one video with its built-in Media Source and enable Loop, or use the VLC Video source to rotate multiple local files in order or shuffle them. OBS handles playback and encoding; YouTube Studio separately schedules the live event. What “schedule rotating playlists” can mean
There are two separate jobs: arranging and repeating videos, and scheduling the YouTube live event. OBS plays local media into the encoder feed; YouTube Studio creates an upcoming live event. A YouTube playlist is not an OBS playback source: it organizes videos on YouTube, while OBS VLC Video plays files stored on your computer. For a free workflow, OBS Studio is the clearest documented choice. It supports a single looping file through Media Source and multi-file rotation through VLC Video. VLC must be installed separately; the OBS documentation specifies a matching 64-bit VLC installation when using 64-bit OBS. The OBS Media Sources documentation is dated January 11, 2022, so check current app versions if a media format fails.

Choose the right playback option

Set up a rotating playlist in OBS
Install OBS and VLC
- Install OBS Studio for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- Install VLC separately. If you use 64-bit OBS, install the matching 64-bit VLC version so OBS can use its VLC Video source.
- Keep the video files you plan to stream accessible on the computer running OBS. The playlist source plays local media; it does not pull a YouTube playlist into the encoder.
Add multiple videos with VLC Video
- In OBS, select the scene that should contain the stream’s video.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the media files in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to restart from the beginning after the final item. It is enabled by default.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized rotation; it is disabled by default.
- Confirm that the source is visible in the scene and that the video appears in the OBS preview.
VLC Video’s documented visibility behavior is to stop when hidden and restart when visible. If you switch scenes, do not assume the source will continue seamlessly in the background.

Loop a single video with Media Source
- In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source.
- Select the local file you want to play.
- Enable Loop, which is off by default.
- Check the OBS preview and audio before connecting the encoder to YouTube.
OBS lists these Media Source video formats: .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm. Listed audio formats are .mp3, .aac, .ogg, and .wav. If a file does not load, verify its format and consult the documentation for your installed OBS version.
Schedule the YouTube live event separately
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Under Manage, choose the option to schedule a stream, then reuse prior settings or create a new event.
- Get the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room, and enter them in OBS’s streaming settings.
- At the planned time, start the encoder from OBS and go live through the YouTube workflow. Scheduling creates and promotes an upcoming event; it does not start OBS or rotate local files by itself.
Follow YouTube’s current encoder and scheduling instructions for the exact Studio flow. If you have never streamed before, YouTube says initial live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Its getting-started requirements include a verified channel, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and a streamer aged 16 or older; see YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.

Before you leave a playlist running
- Check every element’s rights. You need rights to the video, music, and other material in the broadcast. YouTube’s content policies apply; copyright questions can also depend on jurisdiction.
- Test the sequence. Confirm the intended order or shuffle behavior and verify both picture and audio in OBS before starting the event.
- Plan for long broadcasts. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an indefinite 24/7 stream will be archived in full.
- Keep the roles straight. OBS handles the local files and encoder connection; YouTube Studio handles the event. Neither a scheduled event nor a YouTube playlist replaces the OBS playback source.
Common problems and fixes
