If you mean a free way to supervise your child’s supported Android device, Google Family Link is a documented option for managing apps, setting screen-time limits and viewing location when sharing is enabled. It is a parental-control service—not a covert spy app—and it cannot remotely listen to calls or show you what is on your child’s screen.
What is the best free spy app?
For transparent parental supervision on a supported Android device, Google Family Link is a practical free option to consider. It lets parents manage apps, review app use, set screen-time limits and check a child’s location under the conditions Google specifies. The right description is parental controls and account supervision, not secret surveillance.

There is no evidence here to support ranking Family Link against every third-party app or Apple’s built-in controls. Availability and features can vary by region, account and device, so check Google’s Family Link setup and compatibility guidance before relying on a particular feature.
What can parents do with Family Link?
- Manage apps: Allow or block apps and review app usage.
- Set screen-time limits: Apply limits to a child’s device and, where available, individual apps.
- View location: Check the location of a child’s Android device or compatible watch after device location sharing is enabled.
- Set Google Play restrictions: Restrict mature content on Google Play.
Google’s feature-specific instructions say app limits require Android 7 or later, or ChromeOS 83 or later; system apps are not supported by the app-limit feature. Those requirements apply to app limits, not necessarily every Family Link function. See Google’s instructions for setting app time limits.

How does location viewing work?
Family Link location viewing depends on device location sharing being enabled. Google recommends turning on Location Accuracy for the most accurate location. This is disclosed device location sharing, not invisible tracking. Follow Google’s location-sharing setup instructions for the relevant device and account.
What Family Link cannot do—and what devices it supports
Google says parents cannot use Family Link to remotely listen to a child’s phone calls or see what is on the child’s screen. Its available supervision features are also limited by compatibility: Google says iPhones, iPads and computers other than Chromebooks cannot be supervised with Family Link, and the service may not be available in every country or region. Requirements can also differ by account, age and device.

Why avoid covert monitoring apps?
Apps marketed for secretly monitoring another person can collect sensitive information without that person’s knowledge. A paper hosted on the Federal Trade Commission website, “No Privacy Among Spies: Assessing the Functionality and Insecurity of Consumer Android Spyware Apps”, examined a sample of consumer Android spyware apps and reported privacy weaknesses, including data sent without encryption or stored in cloud systems with little protection. Those findings concern the apps studied; they do not establish the current security of every product sold today.
