Recommended Free Tools
For a free start, use Playwright’s built-in screenshot assertions if you are comfortable keeping reference images in your project and reviewing changes in code review. If you want hosted visual review, compare Chromatic and Percy against your browser and snapshot needs; Argos is another option to investigate, but its reviewed listing does not establish an exact free quota. ScreenshotNeo is an alternative for producing screenshots through an API, not a replacement for visual-regression comparison.

Which free Playwright screenshot tool should you choose?
| Option | What the published information establishes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright’s built-in screenshot assertions | Compares rendered screenshots with reference snapshots; no separate visual-testing service is required. | Keeping baselines in the repository and reviewing intentional image updates yourself. |
| Chromatic | Its pricing page lists a free plan at $0/month with 5,000 billed snapshots, Chrome testing, unlimited projects, and unlimited users. Its Playwright snapshot workflow requires Chrome. | Cloud-based visual review when Chrome coverage and its integration workflow suit your project. |
| Percy (BrowserStack) | Its plan documentation lists 5,000 free monthly screenshots, unlimited users, and unlimited projects. A screenshot is one page or component at a particular browser and responsive width. | Hosted review when your expected browser-and-width combinations fit the allowance. |
| Argos | Its GitHub Marketplace listing says users can start for free and describes Playwright support and pull-request diffs, but does not establish an exact free monthly quota or eligibility rules. | Checking out a pull-request review workflow after confirming the current free terms. |
| ScreenshotNeo | A website screenshot API and MCP server. It captures images or PDFs; the supplied product information does not describe visual-regression baselines or image-diff review. | Automated screenshot capture when you want an API or AI-agent workflow; pair it with a separate comparison process if you need regression testing. |
Choose based on how you want to maintain baselines, which browsers you need, and how quickly your snapshot combinations use up a hosted allowance. The hosted plan figures above are published vendor terms accessed in 2026 and can change.

Playwright’s screenshot assertions compare the page or element currently rendered by a test with an expected reference image. When the rendering differs, the assertion can flag the change for review. A passing comparison means the current output matches the stored expectation under the conditions used for that test; it does not prove the page is correct in every browser, viewport, or environment.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
This is the simplest no-extra-service route when you are willing to keep expected images with the project and review updates deliberately. When a design change is intentional, inspect the changed image and update the expected snapshot as part of the same reviewed code change. Do not accept new references automatically without checking them: that can turn an unintended UI change into the new expected result.
Set up a screenshot assertion
In an existing Playwright Test project, add an assertion to a test and run it to create the initial reference snapshot. The following example uses the Playwright Test API and checks a page after navigation:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Replace the example URL and snapshot name with your application and a stable, descriptive filename. On the first run, Playwright records the expected image; subsequent runs compare against it. Keep the baseline under version control so code review can show both the test change and the image change.
Make the capture repeatable
Visual comparisons are sensitive to differences in what the browser renders. Before treating a diff as a product regression, check that the page has reached a stable state and that the test is running with consistent data and rendering conditions.

- Wait for the content that matters to appear before capturing; avoid taking a screenshot while data or layout is still changing.
- Use predictable test data and avoid timestamps, rotating content, or other values that change between runs.
- Keep the browser, viewport, fonts, and runtime environment consistent between baseline creation and comparison.
- For animated or transient elements, configure the test or page so that their changing appearance does not obscure the change you want to catch.
- When a diff appears, inspect it before updating the reference. Decide whether it is an intended design change, rendering noise, or a defect.
For wider coverage, add only the browser and viewport combinations that matter to the project. More combinations can find more environment-specific differences, but they also increase the number of screenshots you must review and maintain.
When a hosted service is worth considering
Hosted visual-testing products add a vendor-managed review workflow, such as cloud snapshots or pull-request feedback. That can help when a solo freelancer wants to review changes without relying only on local image files and repository diffs. The trade-off is adopting another service’s integration, snapshot accounting, and plan restrictions.
Chromatic: cloud review with a Chrome restriction for Playwright snapshots
Chromatic’s Playwright documentation says its visual tests extend Playwright’s test and expect utilities. The integration captures page archives, uploads them to Chromatic’s cloud, and performs pixel diffs for review through its app and Git-linked snapshots. Its documentation also says Playwright tests are handled through a generated Storybook archive rather than Chromatic directly running Playwright tests. Chrome is required for Playwright snapshotting.

Percy: calculate usage by browser and responsive width
BrowserStack’s Percy documentation lists a free plan with 5,000 screenshots per month, unlimited users, and unlimited projects. Its counting unit is not simply a page: a screenshot is one page or component rendered at a particular browser and responsive width. The documentation’s example is two pages across two browsers and three widths, which produces 12 screenshots.
Estimate your monthly use as the number of pages or components captured multiplied by the browser and width combinations actually tested, then account for how often the suite runs. A project with a modest page count can still create many screenshots if it tests several browser and viewport permutations on every run. Check Percy’s current documentation and plan terms before relying on a quota.
Argos: verify the free offer before relying on it
Argos’s GitHub Marketplace listing describes Playwright support, screenshot and ARIA snapshot comparisons against a baseline, and diffs in pull requests. It says users can start for free, but the reviewed listing does not state an exact free monthly allowance or eligibility rules. Its product site also describes Playwright integration and pull-request workflows. Treat those as vendor-described capabilities and confirm the current offer directly before counting Argos as a long-term free option.

How to decide as a freelancer in India
- Start with the local workflow if it is sufficient. Use Playwright assertions when you can maintain expected images in the repository and your client or team can review updates through normal code review.
- List the coverage you actually need. Count the pages or components, browsers, responsive widths, and test runs that matter. This is essential for estimating Percy screenshots and Chromatic snapshots.
- Choose hosted review for a specific workflow benefit. Try Chromatic if its Chrome-only Playwright snapshot requirement is acceptable and its cloud review fits your setup. Evaluate Percy if its screenshot counting unit and published allowance fit your expected volume. Investigate Argos if pull-request diffs are useful, but first clarify its free terms.
- Check India-specific checkout details directly. The published material covered here does not establish INR pricing, GST, accepted payment methods, or India-specific availability for these services. Do not convert a displayed dollar price into a rupee budget and assume it is the amount you will pay.

If your immediate need is to capture a page—not compare it with a visual baseline—ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. Its cleanup steps can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Its response headers identify page verdict and billing status, and bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server provides the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The product offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

The screenshot assertion fails on a machine where it passed before
Compare the rendering conditions: browser version, viewport, fonts, test data, and whether the page was fully ready when captured. If the difference is an intentional design change, review the image and update the expected snapshot deliberately rather than treating every diff as noise.
The first run has no existing reference image
A screenshot comparison needs an expected image to compare against. Run the test to establish the initial reference, inspect it, and commit it with the test. Make sure the file is included in the repository and available in the environment that runs later comparisons.

A hosted free allowance runs out faster than expected
Recalculate using the vendor’s counting unit. For Percy, each page or component at each browser and responsive width is a screenshot; include how many times the suite runs. For Chromatic, check the current meaning and accounting of billed snapshots on its pricing page before estimating usage.
Chromatic does not snapshot the browser you expected
Chromatic’s Playwright documentation requires Chrome for snapshotting. Confirm that the project’s required browser coverage fits that restriction before adopting this integration.
