Choose Sejda when you need clearly stated caps and image-quality controls; iLovePDF or Smallpdf when you want a larger PDF toolkit; and Adobe Acrobat online if you already work in Adobe’s ecosystem and can accept its tighter free-use policy.
What to compare before compressing a PDF online
An online compressor must be judged on more than the download size. Check the service’s free-use allowance, maximum file or page size, image-quality settings, upload and deletion policy, account requirements, and whether it fits a one-off job or repeated work.
Online compression requires uploading the document. Do not use a web service for confidential contracts, identity documents, unreleased business material, or other sensitive files unless its handling terms are acceptable to you. For high-sensitivity documents, use a local/offline PDF workflow instead.

Which compressor should you choose?
Choose PDF24 for the least friction
PDF24 is the strongest default when you want to compress PDF online repeatedly without creating an account. Its “Free Online No limits Secure” wording and stated one-hour automatic deletion make its free policy clearer than the alternatives reviewed. “No limits” is the provider’s product-page claim, not an independent performance test, and no like-for-like compression-ratio benchmark is established.

Choose Sejda when size and quality need a visible trade-off
Sejda is the clearest choice when you need to know the boundaries before starting: documents may contain up to 200 pages or 100 MB, and the service allows three tasks per hour. Its Good and Best image-quality choices let you avoid an unnecessarily aggressive reduction, particularly for scanned pages, photographs, diagrams, and signatures.
Choose iLovePDF for an all-purpose PDF workflow
iLovePDF makes sense if compression is one step in a larger set of PDF tasks. The free Basic plan includes Compress PDF with limited processing, while Premium adds unlimited processing and all tools. The free tier is therefore suitable for occasional work, but it is not an unlimited compressor.

Choose Smallpdf when you may need stronger compression later
Smallpdf offers a Free plan, while its paid plans list Strong Compression. It is a reasonable starting point for straightforward jobs when you want the possibility of a more aggressive paid mode, but the free plan should not be treated as equivalent to the paid feature set.
Choose Adobe Acrobat online for an Adobe-centered setup
Adobe Acrobat online is convenient for existing Adobe users, but its free allowance is restrictive: after you use the free service, Compress PDF is limited to one free transaction during the current 30-day period. Adobe also says unsigned users’ files are deleted soon after download. That combination makes it better for an occasional Adobe workflow than for batch or recurring free compression.

How to compress a PDF online without losing usable quality
- Inspect the original. Record the file size and page count. Note whether the PDF contains scanned pages, photographs, screenshots, or mostly selectable text. Image-heavy files usually offer more scope for size reduction than text-only files.
- Match the service to the document. Select a provider whose limits and deletion policy fit the file. For confidential material, stop and use an offline workflow rather than uploading it.
- Start with the least aggressive setting. Use Sejda’s Good or Best image-quality choice when available. In iLovePDF, begin with the low-compression option if preserving visual quality matters.
- Download the result and inspect it. Open several representative pages at 100% to 150% zoom. Check small text, fine lines, diagrams, photos, signatures, and any pages with dense detail.
- Verify document functions. Confirm that hyperlinks, bookmarks, searchable text, page count, forms, and annotations still work. A smaller file is not a successful result if these elements have been damaged.
- Keep the original. Save the uncompressed source separately so you can retry with a gentler setting or a different service.
What “without losing quality” really means
Compression quality depends mainly on how a service handles embedded images. A PDF made from selectable text may change very little, while a scan or photo-heavy document can shrink substantially at the cost of softer text, blocky graphics, or lost detail. The services above do not provide a common, independent compression-ratio test, so there is no defensible percentage ranking between them. Test the file you actually need to send.
Free does not always mean unlimited
- PDF24: the provider states no limits and no registration.
- Sejda: 200 pages or 100 MB per document, with three tasks per hour.
- iLovePDF: limited processing on Basic; unlimited processing and all tools on Premium.
- Smallpdf: a Free plan exists, while Strong Compression is listed with paid plans.
- Adobe Acrobat online: one free compression transaction per current 30-day period after use.
Limits can change, so recheck the service’s current page when a job is time-critical or unusually large.

Privacy and deletion considerations
Every online option in this comparison involves an upload. PDF24 states that its servers are in Germany and that files are automatically deleted after one hour. Adobe says unsigned users’ files are deleted soon after download. For Sejda, iLovePDF, and Smallpdf, review the current retention and processing terms before sending a sensitive document; a free price does not remove the privacy decision.
Practical recommendations by situation
| Your priority | Recommended starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| No account and recurring free use | PDF24 | Provider states no limits, no registration, and one-hour automatic deletion. |
| Visible limits and image-quality choice | Sejda | Publishes the 200-page/100-MB cap, three-tasks-per-hour limit, and Good/Best settings. |
| Many different PDF operations | iLovePDF | Compression sits inside a broader toolkit, with a paid upgrade for unlimited processing. |
| Simple free tier with stronger paid mode | Smallpdf | Free plan is available; Strong Compression is listed for paid plans. |
| Existing Adobe workflow | Adobe Acrobat online | Convenient ecosystem fit, provided one free transaction per current 30-day period is enough. |
Bottom line
Start with PDF24 for most ordinary, non-sensitive PDFs. Pick Sejda when you need explicit limits and quality choices, iLovePDF or Smallpdf when breadth matters, and Adobe Acrobat online when ecosystem convenience outweighs its free-use restriction. In every case, judge the downloaded file—not just its smaller byte count—before sharing it.
