For Windows video playback with documented downloadable skins, VLC is the clearest pick. Winamp is a strong alternative for music-first listening and classic or modern skin styles. Windows Media Player Legacy also supports skins, but Microsoft has scheduled an end to that feature on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later.

VLC: the clearest choice for video
VideoLAN describes VLC as free and open source and provides an official Windows download. Its Windows download page and skin catalog make it a straightforward option when you want a skinnable player without giving up a general-purpose media player.

- Download a skin file with the .VLT extension from VideoLAN’s official skin catalog.
- Place the .VLT file in VLC’s skins folder. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 skin instructions explain the Windows location and application steps.
- Open VLC preferences and select the skinned interface as described in the instructions. Restart VLC if prompted so the interface change takes effect.
The cited instructions are for VLC 3.0, so menu details may differ in other releases. Check the instructions for your installed version rather than assuming every current build presents identical controls.

Winamp: classic and modern skins for music
Winamp’s official Windows desktop documentation describes classic and modern/freeform skins, along with choosing and managing installed skins through the Options menu. The page also describes Winamp as free and lists broad audio support and some video formats. That documentation supports recommending it for music-focused users who value skin choice, but it does not establish it as a preferred replacement for VLC for general video playback.
Windows Media Player Legacy: a dated option
Microsoft documents skins for Windows Media Player Legacy and lists .wmz and .wms skin formats, as well as .wmd skin packages, in its supported file types information. Microsoft notes that additional media formats can depend on installed codecs.

There is a time-sensitive limitation: Microsoft Learn’s Windows Media Player Skins documentation says, “Skins will no longer be supported in Windows Media Player Legacy (WMPL) starting November 10, 2026, on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later.” As of October 4, 2026, that is a scheduled change, not one that has already taken effect. The notice is specifically for Windows 11 version 24H2 and later; it should not be generalized to all Windows editions or versions.

How to make the choice
- Choose VLC if your priority is video playback and you want a documented route to downloadable skins.
- Choose Winamp if you mainly listen to music and want documented classic or modern/freeform skin options.
- Keep Windows Media Player Legacy in mind if its interface is already part of your setup, but consider the announced Windows 11 support date before relying on skins long-term.
