Best Free Live-TV Streaming Sites: FAST Services vs. Cable

Free FAST services offer scheduled, ad-supported channels and often on-demand shows, but their lineups do not automatically match cable. Compare services and verify must-have channels locally.

For U.S. viewers, free live-TV streaming is worth using for scheduled, ad-supported entertainment and some news or sports channels—but it is not a guaranteed replacement for cable. FAST services such as The Roku Channel, Pluto TV, Sling Freestream, Tubi, Xumo Play, and Plex offer different lineups; none should be assumed to include the local broadcast affiliate, premium network, or live event you want. Check the exact channel in your market before changing or canceling a paid service.

What “free live TV” means

FAST stands for free ad-supported streaming television. These services carry scheduled internet channels, often alongside on-demand movies and shows. The free tier does not mean ad-free: Pluto TV says commercial breaks help fund its channels and titles. Its FAQ calls the service “free, safe, and legal”; that is Pluto TV’s own description.

Cable and paid live-TV streaming subscriptions work differently: they bundle particular networks under plans whose lineups and terms vary. An antenna receives local over-the-air broadcasts when stations reach your location and reception conditions allow. These options may appear alongside one another in a TV interface, but they do not provide the same channels or rights.

Service What its official information says What to verify
The Roku Channel Roku advertises 500+ free live channels on its current overview, accessed October 4, 2026. Roku’s live-TV overview also presents paid live-TV destinations. Check which destinations are free: some services promoted in the same overview require a separate subscription. Roku says compatible Roku TVs can use an HDTV antenna for local over-the-air stations; reception and station coverage vary.
Pluto TV Free live channels plus on-demand movies and shows, supported by ads. Pluto describes access through browsers and supported devices. Content availability can change. Do not assume a fixed channel count or that a local broadcast affiliate is included. See Pluto TV for current availability.
Sling Freestream Sling advertises 600+ live channels and 40,000+ on-demand titles on its service page, accessed October 4, 2026. Sling says an account is not required to watch. Its page lists up to 10 hours of free DVR and personalization features for account holders. Those figures and features are Sling’s advertised offer, not a cable-equivalent channel count. Freestream is separate from Sling’s paid plans. Check the Sling Freestream page for current details.
Tubi Tubi’s live guide displays categories including national and local news, sports, weather, and entertainment. Tubi announced over 200 live channels and more than 100 local station feeds across nearly 60 designated market areas in 2022. Those are historical figures, not a current lineup total. Use Tubi’s live guide to check what is currently available.
Xumo Play Comcast describes Xumo Play as a FAST service offering linear channels and on-demand content. A current channel-count total is not established here. Availability and lineup can change; check Xumo’s service information.
Plex Plex distinguishes its free streaming channels from antenna-based DVR. Plex Support says free channels generally do not include premium cable networks or local broadcast affiliates, and licensed channels cannot be paused, rewound, or fast-forwarded. The support details were not directly accessible for verification, so confirm current limits on Plex Support.

The advertised 500+ channels on The Roku Channel and 600+ on Sling Freestream do not establish how many channels are unique, relevant to you, local, or comparable to cable networks. A larger headline total is not necessarily a better fit.

Can FAST replace cable?

It can replace some casual viewing, especially if you are happy to browse scheduled genre channels and on-demand libraries. It is not a dependable substitute for a specific cable network, local affiliate, or major-league event unless that channel or event is confirmed in your market and on your service.

DAANT TV Antenna Indoor Long Range
  • Enjoy More Tv antenna for Local Channels: Get more channels by antenna for smart TV, receive local broadcasting, ABC, CBS, NBC, CPS, FOX, CW, ION, UMAS, etc.
  • HD Antenna for TV: Our digital TV antenna indoor adopts an upgraded Smart IC Chip, receives TV broadcasts including 4K, UHD and 1080 HDTV for the hd picture.
  • 16FT Coax Cable: Coaxial cable is composed of a solid center conductor, dielectric insulation, three aluminum shielding layers, and a durable outer layer. so that you will never lose signal or suffer distortion even in bad weather.
  • Compatibility and Usage Tips: Not suitable for older analog televisions; supports smart TVs and digital TVs. For optimal signal reception, try placing the antenna near a window or in other locations, and test both vertical and horizontal orientations.
  • Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).
  • Likely a good fit: You want free, ad-supported entertainment and are flexible about what to watch.
  • Check carefully first: You rely on a named news or sports channel, a local network affiliate, a particular live event, or specific programming in another language.
  • Consider an antenna: You want local over-the-air stations and can receive them at home. An antenna does not provide FAST channels or premium cable networks.
  • Keep both if useful: FAST apps can supplement cable rather than replace it. Comcast announced an integration of free FAST channels into Xfinity Stream for customers regardless of Xfinity Video subscription; that historical announcement does not guarantee a current lineup.

There is no meaningful universal monthly-price comparison in the available service information: cable prices depend on provider, market, package, equipment, offers, and taxes. Compare the specific package and market you would actually use, and confirm channel availability directly before canceling.

How to choose and check a service

  1. Write down the must-have channels or events. Separate local broadcast affiliates from local-news streams; they are not interchangeable.
  2. Search each service’s current guide. Confirm the exact channel and, for local feeds, your ZIP code or market. Plex Support says its free channels generally exclude local broadcast affiliates and premium cable networks.
  3. Decide whether you want scheduled channels, on-demand titles, or both. Pluto TV and Sling Freestream describe both types of programming.
  4. Check account and playback features. Sling says Freestream can be watched without an account, while its page lists DVR up to 10 hours and personalization features for account holders. Plex says its licensed free channels do not support pause, rewind, or fast-forward; verify current terms before relying on that limitation.
  5. Check your device and location. Confirm the app runs on your TV, streaming device, phone, or browser and that the content is available where you live. Pluto TV says its content availability is subject to change.
  6. Test the free option before changing paid service. If a must-have channel or event is missing, a paid package or antenna may still be necessary.

How much do people watch FAST?

A 2024 report from Xumo and FASTMaster Consulting, based on a survey of 4,000 U.S. adults from Q3 2023 to Q1 2024, reported average evening viewing of 1 hour 40 minutes of FAST channels among surveyed FAST viewers. The same commissioned report reported 1 hour 58 minutes of evening cable-network viewing among cable customers. These are survey findings published by Xumo and FASTMaster Consulting, not an independent measurement of all viewers. Read the report announcement.

Does free live TV require a new device?

Not necessarily. Pluto TV describes support for smart TVs, streaming devices, mobile devices, and browsers; check whether your specific device is supported by the service you choose. A Roku streaming device is only one possible way to run TV apps on a compatible screen. Some smart TVs already have the apps, and compatible Roku TVs can connect directly to an HDTV antenna for over-the-air stations.
